I did a little more checking. I found that all of the major North American wireless carriers have deployed a centralized spam-reporting service. When you receive a spam text message on your phone, forward that text to the shortcode 7726 (which spells "SPAM"). You'll then receive an automated message from your wireless carrier, asking you then to enter the phone number from which the spam text was sent. I did as the article said, and everything worked as reported.

I received the message below (complete with misspellings) on March 8th, 2013. Others have received it from 574-343-4249 and I gather many other numbers. This really isn't the sort of junk I need my wife to see on my phone:
