An 8 year old loan?  Check your state for the statute of limitations on that debt but I suspect it is time-barred....meaning they can't take any kind of legal action to collect on it.  They are trying to scam you.

EVERYONE:  A sometimes reliable way to determine exactly who is calling is to pull your credit report (here's a link to the only one the FTC endorses:  https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp).

There's a section on your report that tells you every agency that has accessed your credit report, their address and the date they accessed it.

These scammers often use a variety of fake names so just because it's not the same exact name as they gave you when they called doesn't mean it's not some version of the same scamming company.

Once you get the name, file a complaint with the FTC naming that entity because most of the comments I've read on here are in violation of the FDCPA.

Also.....if they don't send you a debt validation letter within 5 days after you request one, you KNOW they're a scammer.

Check out this FTC information:  http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection

Good luck!

I just received a call from them.  they do not speak English very well and are trying to scare people into settling outside of court.  They had some  of my information correct but not all. I did not verify any of it.  When i told him that I had already looked his number up and seen it was a scam and that I would have the police and my lawyer contact him, his attitude changed and he hung up.

You guys, I received the same calls today from these people.  They asked me if I had ever been charged with fraud and I said no.  They said there were charges that were going to be filed against me tomorrow and at 11 a.m., cops would come to my work and arrest me and put in jail.  I hung up on him and he called back and left a message that said, "you will be going to jail tomorrow, good luck".  I just put their number in google and found this page.  I think I will be calling them tomorrow and let them know they are the ones that might be going to jail!!!!!  Report them to the FBI.  I can't stand these scammers, they try to scare the heck out of you.

I should also mention the name of the representative that called was Kevin Bacon. I know Kevin Bacon hasn't had a hit movie in a long time but did he really go into debt collecting and threatening people. Plus if he worked on his accent that much to sound different he should win an Oscar, convincing portrayal of this role.

This number just called me today and said that if I or my attorney don't call them immediately that all he can do is wish me good luck for what is about to be brought onto me. They don't speak very good english and further more they don't provided any information about what this is in regards to. Just threats that the cops will be coming to arrest me and that I will be held in jail for 7 days while an investigation is going on.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:

They called my job and I called back. It sounds just like the guy that called about a month ago. I told him that before they contact my job that they were suppose to send the paperwork to my address, since they are suppose to have that information. He threatened me with police arrest at work and some such mess. Well, I told him to just send the paperwork. He said it would be sent to my job tomorrow. I hung up on him after that. I'm not so stupid that I would believe the police would go to my place of work before coming to my home to attempt to serve me papers.

Got the same call from this number over and over and over again.  They call every week and think threatening will work.  Its not even something criminal.....They need to learn how to speak english a little better and be able to provide you with your own information when asked instead of hanging up on you then calling back saying cops are coming and that the cops are going to beat me to a bloddy pulp.  What ever scammers!!!

I went to whitepages.com and put in the phone number and it states that this number is a home number and belongs to a Janet Taylor and she lives at 533 west monticello st.  in Brookhaven, MS.  I wonder if there is any legal action we can do for crank calls like this.

They are criminal scammers.  Do NOT give them any money or any of your information.  It is illegal for them to threaten arrest or jail.  Debt is a civil, not criminal matter.  Learn your rights under the FDCPA.
