These people keep calling me, tellling me to have a lawyer contact them because I "owe" them ~$900.  They say that they can't give me the information about my "case" because of privacy issues... and then tell me that if it goes to court I will pay 15 thousand dollars.  I don't owe anyone anything, reporting them.

Debt Collector
I got a called by this guy who said that his name was Steven White from American Legal Services Justice Department.  He said that I owe money and that I was going to get sued and arrested unless he convinced his clients to not to sue me.  He said that I owed $1500 but I could pay $973.  This guy had a heavy Indian accent and when I researched the phone number through yellow pages I couldn't find it.  I just researched the number again and I found it on this website and see you guys testimonies.  I don't know what to do now.  How can I proceed from this?  Are these guys real?  I thought they can not call to threat anyone by saying they are going to put you in jail or suing you?  Who are these people?

Interesting information about so called LAW FIRMS filing MERITLESS LAWSUITS against debtors in NY.

The NY Attorney General DOES NOT LIKE DEBT COLLECTORS THE VIOLATE LAWS

They are MERITLESS because they have NO PROOF the debt is owed..

If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
1.    The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
2.    Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
3.    File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
4.    File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
5.    File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)

By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

Scam alert: Bogus debt collectors
By Leslie McFadden ? Bankrate.com
Monday, Aug. 3
Posted 2 p.m.
Bankrate reporter Leslie McFadden contributed this entry.
This scam isn't technically about credit cards, but it is scary enough to post a warning. The Better Business Bureau issued an alert today saying consumers across the country are getting phone calls from bogus debt collectors claiming default on a payday loan. Of course, the consumer needs to pay a large fee to avoid arrest -- as much as $1,000.
The caller poses as a lawyer, and may threaten extradition to face trial if the consumer doesn't pay up immediately.
What makes these calls alarming -- and perhaps convincing -- is that the perpetrators reference the consumer's personal information, such as the person's Social Security number, driver's license number, previous bank account numbers, home address -- even personal references.
"The amount of information they have is really troubling," says BBB spokeswoman Alison Southwick. She adds that the amount of data points to a possible security breach.
Spread the word to your friends and family: Don't give out personal or financial information to an unknown caller. Scammers can spoof Caller ID to display different numbers, so trust your instincts over technology.
The BBB offers these tips:
?    Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation which substantiates the debt.
?    Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call.
?    File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online if the caller is abusive, uses threats or otherwise violates federal telemarketing laws or the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
?    File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau online if you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you.

Getting scammed by these effers too! They are not legitimate! Im reporting them right now. If we all do hopefully someone can track these people down. They are in Pasadena it seems and they are threatning my "references" and me as well. This has to be illegal.

Please if everyone else is experiencing this same scam we need to nip it in the bud quickly because they are BOLD (calling my job and family; they also have my social).

The FTC can be reached at 1-877-382-4357; please report them

Someone please tell me what to do.  I am getting phone calls repeatedly (13 this morning in 8 min) from these people. He left 9 voice mails yesterday telling me that I owe some debt and that I have committed fraud and am going to be arrested. He called my sister as well and left the last 4 digits of my social in the message (don't know how this guy knows so much about me but I am scared)!  He told my sister that I had commited fraud on some loan and that she was going to be responsible and that is so untrue, my sister has never signed for any kind of loan for me.  Says he is with American Legal Services.  I contacted a lawyer yesterday and he said that this is not a real company and therefore he can't help me because they deal with actual collection companies who break the law.  I called the man back last night and he started asking me if I had ever been in legal trouble in the past and I told him that it was none of his business and that if he had something on me, he needed to mail it to me so I can verify the debt.  He told me that he did not have to send me anything in the mail and that he would not be talked to like that.  He hung up on me.  I thought maybe he would give up on it at that point but then my phone started again this morning.  It says "Unavailable" when he calls but I am sure it is him as he left the messages yesterday.  I am at work and can't answer these phone calls but now I don't know what to do........ Can anyone give me any advice?

When I called them and said I was looking at their info and that they were a fraud he got extremly rude and asked my name when I wouldn't tell him he said thta it didn't matter he could look up my cell phone number and by the afternoon he would have all my info to include my social. I called local police dept and they told me to call the DA office to report so I am now waiting on a return phone call from him.
