} Their tactics ought not to be legal

"Behaving like bullies" is already illegal. If locked under a cease-comm notice, subsequent contact is harassment, also illegal. Telling you they'll quit collecting your old account and then continuing to collect is deceptive and/or misleading, also illegal. The only legal "out" would be if PRA is skip tracing for someone else, which again can be made illegal with a simple "shaddup" notice.

We've been over this ground before. Take proactive steps to win back your peace or stop making the same dreary complaints every other week.

Like Bob did last month, I'm pretty sure I advised you long, long ago that you can make your loser defendant PRA pay your legal fees and that lawyers commonly work those cases on contingency. You want "deterrence" so badly? Assess your case, prosecute viciously, poke a hole in their bank account, and bleed out your share of payback. No, it won't get the whole company shuttered, but your problem should finally be put to rest.

Public exposure of their antics is fine and noble, but ultimately does not raise their cost of doing bad business nearly as high as paying out judgments, consent awards, and raised fees to their insurers. If FDCPA litigation is not doing enough damage, it's simply because too few people enforce their rights when they have cause. That apathy is echoed across the industry. The bad actors count on us to keep quiet and not demand what we're all owed for the abuses. What we permit we encourage.

You really need to get off your "Congress For Sale" wagon. It was that same body which spent three years drafting the FDCPA to give *you* unprecedented power over collector jackals. Relative to other consumer laws, it's about the easiest one for a "private attorney general" to use as a weapon. ACA International and its peers do lobby hard to dilute your rights, and every so often some elected clown writes a bill to help them destroy the law. But just as often, other officials and judges and consumer lawyers have made a wave to *enlarge* your protections. Increasingly, defective debt cases are thrown out, AGs get collector crooks spanked and jailed, and states are passing tougher laws to end the abuses.

If you want to go on thinking we all fight alone and nobody cares and nothing changes, you will get exactly the non-results you have anticipated. There is a process available which does make a difference. At least examine the option seriously before you denigrate the rest of us for the suggestion.

James, once I learned the whole story about these scum, they no longer "get under my skin."  Every day, I survey the contents of my caller ID, and when these vermin have called, I let the rest of the world know something about them, so that other people will not feel intimidated. Takes a few minutes while drinking my tea, no problem to me. These are the bottom-feeding lowest rung in the bankster/financial/Wall Street takeover of our country. They perform a function, just like janitors perform a function for JP Morgan. Jamie Dimon gets millions of dollars a minute, and the janitor gets $12 an hour....The janitor deserves respect, but Portfoolio Recovery deserves none, do not engage with them at all. This is a (legal) extortion scam.

these idiots are trying to stick me with paying an old bill that has already been paid years ago!!!  too bad i didn't keep the 'paid in full' receipt from 5 years ago.  i have no way to prove it's paid after that long, and that's what they're counting on!!!  it's my word against theirs.  they even offered me a 'special deal' to pay them part of it so they will never call me again.  i'm not going to pay them a dime!  that bill was paid off in full years ago!!!  it's blackmail!!!

Cate, allowing them to get under your skin and keep you angry for such a long period of time gives them power over you. You would be better off ignoring or blocking the calls and getting on with your life. I am sure you could find better activities to do everyday than post on here.

Most telephone providers allow you to block a set amount of numbers for free, or iPhone users can use the new do not disturb feature to ignore any calls from numbers not in your contacts.

They called 10:30 a.m. Sunday 2/17/13. I don't answer unknown numbers and I didn't answer this one but picked up phone and hung up right away so they couldn't leave message. If it was a collection call, then they had the wrong number/person.

Bob, above, believes it would be a good case, were I to get a lawyer to sue Portfolio Recovery . What they are doing is obnoxious, they are behaving like the bullies, thieves, and thugs that they are. BUT *they are NOT violating any laws.*

That is what people have to understand. These vermin are operating, at least in my case, perfectly within the law. That is the problem. Their tactics ought not to be legal.

I am reacting to the way these pond scum were able to intimidate me, before I understood exactly what the facts are. I am angry at the way they were able to make me miserable and afraid, and I remain angry that they continue to do the same to unwary, decent people, who don't "get it" that they are being scammed.

There are many lawyers who would take your case at no expense. Sounds like a really good lawsuit. You would definitely profit from the suit. I would sue them.

Prank Call
Portfoolio called twice yesterday from this number -- it was #289 and #290 since they "decided to cease collection efforts" on this never-verified so-called debt, in early September of 2010, according to their attorney Pearson.

I see Resident 47 above has decried my failure to sue these vermin. Suing them would take time and money I cannot afford, with no real prospect of any deterrence. People, including state attorneys general,  have been suing these a$$holes all over the USA for years, and it has not deterred them. One person used to post lists of the suits that had been filed over the past few months.

These pond scum will not cease until The Best Congress Money Can Buy decides to do something about their sort. That is not likely to happen any time soon. My frequent posts about them are not intended to stop them, as they are too stupid to stop calling. They believe in magic:  One day, after about a million calls to this number, over years, out of the blue, they *believe* someone in this house will pick up, and ask how we can serve them, give them our bank account number, and bow to their neediness. Yeah, right!

No, Resident 47, the more people who publish info about them, the more people who render them ridiculous rather than intimidating, the fewer persons, I hope, will be intimidated by these swine.

It would be well worth the effort (if nothing else), just to watch them squirm as a judge read them the Riot Act in a courtroom. Nothing is to be gained by allowing this type of egregious behavior to continue--and it sends the wrong message.

Cate has been reporting PRA calls for close to two years. She will never sue, and the calls will never stop. Her making online gripes "has become sort of a recreation" the last I read. "If they stopped calling, I would go silent", she declares. Like all rogue collectors, PRA is undeterred by anonymous rants, and the only complaint it will respond to will have a Summons attached. But apathy is easier for everyone, thus the abuses continue.

Prank Call
Banner day: Sunday, received call #280!!!! from Portfoolio Recovery experts, since September, 2010, when, according to their lawyer, Pearson, they "decided to cease collection efforts" on an unverified debt from at least as far back as 1997.

Hmmm, that was 15 1/2 years ago, or 66 months...are they just dumb, or are they terminally stupid? Not one call has ever been answered since they started pestering us in March of 2009 -- that must have been thousands of calls, as the vermin used to call four times a day. Not once, has anyone picked up. What are their chances of getting their hands on a single penny from our bank account? Zero. What are their chances of attracting endless hatred and very bad Karma? 100%

Keep it up boys and girls, until the day you all decide to go on the wagon and sober up.

If you have selective call forwarding, Just call forward to your state attorney generals office or other paid porn site. I began to notice most of these calls are from cell phones, I don't think most of the callers are using offices. When I get one of the clown on the line, I just play back my own recorded message stating that i'm recording the call for any violations of the FCRA and will use the information for future ligation. I believe that they are instructed not to talk on recorded lines. They hang up right away, or you get one of the more dumber ones that violated every law in the book. Just takes a little baiting.

Got a call from this number today. I have never seen it. My Android phone has an app that automatically blocks all numbers that are either not in my "phone book", or are out of a certain zip code. No message, nothing. I hate when I'm "ghost" called. I prefer someone leave a message. At least then, I know who it is, and whether I should respond. All a "ghost" call does, is make me not give a crap.

Happy New Year, all. One thing we can count on, Portfoolio Recovery experts will not abandon us in the new year, and we will still have the pleasure of letting others know what scum they are each time they call. This was call #277 since they "decided" to "cease" collection efforts two years and three months ago. This morning it was call #276 since September 2010. And how many times did they call here before that? Who the heck knows!  And yet, in all those years, not once, not one single time, has anybody picked up the phone, and never, not ever, will anybody ever pick up the phone. With a business plan like that, these recovery experts need to sober up.

These idiots called at 7:30 on a Sunday night!  There is no respectable collection agency that will have people calling on a Sunday night.  I usually let it go to the machine and they never leave a message.  So you know it is not important.  I have bought me a little thing called an air horn, so the next time they call, I bet they have a headache by the time they hang up the phone.
