Text originated from 845-464-0992 (NY). The content was: "ILWU C.U. ALERT: Your CARD starting with 4636 has been DEACTIVATED. Please contact us at 310-480-1235."

An obvious fraud, if for no other reason that NO legitimate bank or credit agency would send such a ridiculous text in the first place. It's like getting an email from PayPal or BofA, etc., that says there's a problem with your account, and expecting you to follow the link they provide in order to obtain your personal data. Another obvious clue is the origin - unless you actually have an account with the ILWU Credit Union, why would you even consider this as legitimate?

If anyone in this day and age, after hearing over and over about these types of scam for well over a decade now, still falls for this stuff, I worry for the future....

What's pathetic is that the cell phone carriers can't seem to come up with a simple solution to block incoming messages if they don't originate from someone in your contacts list. And what's even more pathetic is that the FCC seems impotent to address these types of phone/text scams.

For those who are charged a per-text fee, there is nothing you can do to prevent the unwanted texts. Absolutely ridiculous.

I received the same message but from the telephone number 845-464-0992.

It reads"ILWU C.U. ALERT: Your CARD.....Please contact us at 310-480-1235."

I NEVER receive these type of scam text messages.

I received this message on my mobile a few day after completing an ebay sale & paypal transaction. Wondering if there is a connection here???

Watch your bank accounts people. This could result in major fraud.

I just received the same message ILWU C.U. ALERT: Your CARD starting with 4636 has been DEACTIVATED Please contact us at 310-480-1235. I belong to the ILWU credit union, and they are legit.
But they are not the ones contacting us. This is a scam and don't give them any info. The call came from Oregon. They sent it to my husbands cell and also my cell.  The scary thing is how did they get my info?
I will call my credit union tomorrow to let them know about this.

Received txt message "ILWU C.U. ALERT:  Your CARD starting with 4636 has been DEACTIVATED.  Please contact us at 310-291-7215."

The phone number is a cell phone number in Gardena, CA.

When I did a search on ILWU it indicates it is a Credit Union with a Wilmington, CA address.  They have a very fancy/official looking website, but I believe this is a scam!

Very disturbing.

Definitely a scam. I get the same text messages about my account being frozen or deactivated (in spite of being on national do not call list and not having an account with the bank in question) and the only difference is that the bank name is changed to a bank local to my area (in S. Wisconsin). They must be using some kind of computer program that matches up local bank names with area codes of the people they are trying to scam. Or someone figured out how to send viral spam via SMS now and it will be just as bad as email spam...great :-(

Of course do not reply to the text message or call the number listed in the SMS, it could be a way to hack or redirect your account to be used to make expensive international calls, or if you ever actually did get through to someone and followed the instructions for pushing the buttons, it would probably ask you for a credit card number eventually.

Don't take this harassment laying down, report it online at fcc.gov. People who refuse to remove you from their calling list after you request it, especially if you are on the federal no-call list, are committing a serious crime. The number of origin is most likely not their real telephone number, but of course the FCC has the technology to figure out where the call really came from. Report these annoying a**holes, they are nothing but immoral scammers.

I received the following SMS late in the evening and of course do NOT have any account starting with this number!

Star USA FCU Alert: Your CARD starting with 4414 has been placed on HOLD.  Please call us at 800-396-0778.  Reply X to Stop.

I blocked my caller ID and gave the number a call and the recording only gives you two options.  One to activate your card and the other to change your PIN.

I of course hit Zero to see if that would do anything and the phone just went silent.

This is pretty scary that stuff like this is now happening.  Glad I have a monitor on all of my credit :)

got the same Yakima message about 3 am. The message said call 800-578-0814, no doubt the number for one of the Russian gangs finding another way to steal ouir money.  This is interstate crime and a federal matter.  If the president would spend as much time and tax dollars enforcing our laws rather than fighting our laws, we wouldn't have criminal gangs like this operating in america
