Same story, different day...Fortunately, I did not fall for this ploy. My red flag was he called my Mother's home phone?!

"Greg" is currently using the  702-940-0741 phone number. If you call the number you may or may not hear the companies name (more than one message). There is also has a hokey web site I found.

The Clark County Clerk's Office suggested I contact the Atty. General to file a complaint.

Ugh.

We got scammed by "Greg" at Recorded Document Services as well.

Here's what I found out:
-When the scammer calls a newlywed, he infers he is employed by the Clark County Recorder office. (When he introduces himself, he uses a slightly different office name, but CLEARLY INFERS he is with the marriage bureau.) According to Ms. Chris Makowsky, a supervisor at the Las Vegas marriage bureau, their office has been aware of ?Recorded Document Services? for many years but hasn't been able to stop him.  He barely ?skirts the law? in how he makes the call.

-Marriage licenses in Nevada are ?open records?. Therefore anyone can go into a marriage bureau, view the records, and write down the names/addresses of marriage license applicants (Then look up their phone numbers on their own).
HOWEVER, I had NO IDEA the bureau would issue a ?Certified Copy of the Marriage Certificate? to absolutely ANYONE who walked in off the street and paid $15!  That policy is what allows for these scammers to operate.

-Once the scammer calls, infers he?s with the bureau, gets your credit card number AND security code, he now has your credit card info and can get a CERTIFIED copy of your marriage certificate.  Can you imagine the fraud he can commit with all of that information???? (We canceled our credit card as soon as we uncovered his scheme)

Although a previous poster said this wasn?t an actual ?scam? by giving the analogy of the ?passport expedition? companies, this is very different.  Those companies are paid by you to expedite getting your passport, but they do not receive a certified passport of yours!  This guy infers he?s with the bureau and can obtain your certified certificate. He can then assume your identity!

Bottom line for me: I?m ok if a company advertises to expedite my certificate and clearly indicated they are not with the bureau.  In fact, I?ve now received such solicitations.  But, this guy is a scammer due to how he presents himself.  And, he will become a felon if he uses your credit card info and certified marriage certificate info in a fraudulent way.

After speaking to Ms. Makowsky, my take on this is that no one in that office, or at the Nevada?s Attorney General's office, cares enough to change the governmental statute in order to prevent these type of scammers by either limiting how many certified copies they can receive per year (like 2) or preventing entirely anyone (but the two getting married) from getting a ?Certified Copy? of their marriage certificate.

Buyer beware.

Got married in Las Vegas on 03/24/14...

This person (Greg) called my fathers residential phone line on 04/03/14 at approximately 5:30pm asked for me, and said he had a great deal on getting my legal copy of marriage license and gave my father his name (Greg) and his number 702-940-0741...

My father called me and gave the information immediately after the phone call... I was just getting ready to call Greg today 04/04/14 after I looked up marriage scams on Google, and yes Greg has a lot of complaints on the Internet under various other phone numbers than this one (702-940-0741) for various amounts of money...

So now I'm just getting ready to call this number, and my cell phone rings, I look at the caller id and see 702-940-0741! Its Greg calling my cell phone! Now I'm very angry, I never gave anyone In Clark County Las Vegas Nevada any phone numbers, nor had they ever asked or was on any of there paperwork...

This person (Greg) needs to be hunted down and put in jail for fraud... When I answered the phone I not so politely asked where he got this phone number and got no answer from him...

Then I proceeded to tell him that I googled him and found out he's scamming people after they get married for expedited legal wedding licenses charging them on credit/debit cards for $69...

And then told him to never call this number again or my fathers, then he hung up on me...

I don't understand how Clark County Nevada has not found and prosecuted this person...

I did not pay this guy any money as I figured out his scam...

The preceding info was filed with the FTC on 04/04/14

So to all past and future couples getting married in Las Vegas beware of this man (Greg) and file a complaint with the FTC...

Then maybe he will get busted and some jail time to boot... Hopefully to all the people he stole from he will be made to pay all your money back...

Yes I have already started filing complaints and will continue to do so. He misrepresented himself as a county employee and acted as if he had just completed recording our marriage and he was calling as a courtesy and could get them mailed right out to us..can't believe I am so trusting! I am also calling Clark county when they open..maybe if enough people call about him they will alert others so this doesn't happen.

Technically speaking, you can go right to the states website and print out the apps and mail them for far less then what this guy is charging. A certified copy of your license is often required now for a lot of things such as renewing your Drivers license, changing your SS numbers etc.

Why pay someone a excessive fee like this?  On most government sites, they charge less for expedited process of such paper work.  In some states, they give you the option to get one for a extra amount right then.

And I agree with Elspeth on this. This guy is misrepresenting himself..

Glad you were able to cancel the bank card.  Some people here are saying that while sleazy, what "Greg" is doing is not illegal.  However, it IS illegal to misrepresent yourself as calling from a government agency or as a government employee - which is what this "Greg" is doing.  Please do also report "Greg" to the FTC, FCC and your state's Attorney General.

I fell for the scam! Greg called and said he was calling from Clark county and they recorded my license and can get it sent right out. I gave him our card information and when I got off the phone I realized I never gave my home number on any of the documents. We had to cancel the bank card and filed a claim to stop payment. I called back the number over 50 times and only get a recording. I hope they stop this guy!

My husband was at home and thought he was doing the right thing when "Greg" called. Then he called me and I was furious. Not with him, but with the ridiculous company. I told him to call the bank ASAP, and I have left a less than friendly message for "Greg." We will dispute the charge based on fraudulent representation. We both used to be cops, and I have had my identity stolen before, so I am quite familiar with how it works on our end. We have been back from Vegas a whole 5 days and this happens. How annoying!

This Greg guy got me too...  and my $69. He pretended to be from the Clark County "Clerks" Office.

I will let it go, and not be too upset, as long as Mr. Gregory Crouse from Recorded Document Services actually sends my official marriage certificate to me -- ASAP.

These people called me and told me they were from the Courty Clerk's Office.  I did fall from it and ordered the license not knowing I was going to be charged $69.00.  I tried to call them back and I left two messages but noone called me back.  My credit card it handling this.  I received a document from this yesterday and I am mailing it back to them.

Assuming they deliver the docs, I guess it isn't a full fledged scam.  But charging $69 for a $15 document, while tacitly representing themselves as departmental reps, stinks pretty badly.  I got a call from them today and at first thought they were with the department of records.  Two red flags waved me off: the caller's number on my phone didn't indicate it was a NV government office calling; the caller wouldn't take American Express, which I know Clark County will (no doubt the perps here know that Amex will charge back the exorbitant fee for their services upon customer request).  Anyway, before giving sensitive information to an unsolicited caller asking for it, check it out.  I did and saved myself the trouble and exasperation of dealing with the issue later.  I should thank them though, for reminding me to go to the recorder website and order my certified doc.

It is technically a scam? No.  I'd say its opportunistic on his behalf but he did not miss-represent himself.  "Greg" did provide exactly what he said he would.  I spent the $69...I was very worried after I got off the phone ....it hit me that it wasn't Clark County calling and I figured I'd have $10K in electronics charged up at best buy or something.  Called the credit card co the next day and the charge had went through for $69 exactly like he said so I didn't contest the charge or have the Credit Card co do anything.  I ALSO ordered the same $15 certificate from Clark County, NV to compare.  Greg's arrived about three days sooner and they look to be identical docs with all the right stampings, etc.  So - All he must of done is accessed public records, go to the appropriate place in person and send out the certificate (much like you would pay a passport or Visa service to do if you needed quick turnaround).

Illegal? No.
A little sleazy? Yes

I don't have caller ID but was called by Greg at Recorded Document Services; he left a message and I called back. 702-448 4800. Charged me $69 to get my certified marriage license delivered to me. I'm an idiot and fell for the scam. I realized it was a scam when I still have not received a receipt e-mailed to me for this transaction and no one from that number is calling me back now that they have my credit card number. I have called my bank, cancelled my card and disputed the charge.

I don't usually fall for scams. I went online and read all the above. I feel stupid but I have learned and hope too many people don't fall for the same thing.

I know I can purchase it online for $15..I was just trying to be pro-active with someone calling me to get the certified copy mailed to me.

*sigh*

The certificate does show up --

I got the same call from Greg the day we returned from Las Vegas, also went ahead and agreed, thinking I was paying extra for the expedited service from the county.  Ultimately I realized something was amiss and found this string.  My credit card had already been charged so I waited.  To answer the question everyone is asking:  Sure enough the certified certificate came two days after the call.  I am still a bit bugged that it was made to sound like it was the county calling, but I am glad to have the paperwork and be done with this.  I have also gotten two other mail solicitations from other similar services.

That guy Greg called our house phone and left a message, when we didn't even put our home number anywhere on the documents.  My husband didn't realize it was a scam at the time and told me after he paid the 69 for the certificate.  It's sad that he does this to innocent people when you think you are just going through the process of getting paperwork done.

And just how long have you worked for them?  This is scam, and fraud... they try to state that they are the Clerks Office, and offer to expedite the docs for $69.00.  Fortunately, I had already submitted (online) for the copies.

Greg is right, if you turn your certificate over, it states that "this is your souvenir certificate" for keepsake purposes only and not an official record.  The place you were married has 10 days to file your license and certified copies can be ordered through clark county nv once they are officially filed.  Do not allow a company to solicit you in order to receive these papers.  Just go to clarkcountynv.gov/depts/recorder and order your own.  As far as it taking months to receive, that must have been an isolated incident.  It is usually a pretty quick process once ordered.

My husband fell for this too, but we immediately disputed the charge and were able to get it reversed. If he doesn't identify himself as someone who isn't affiliated with Clark County I would recommend you dispute the charge. If he doesn't tell you, he is getting your payment under fraudulent pretenses. I don't think I have ever been so angry. I believe he does send you a legitimate copy of your license, although I never opened the envelope, as I wanted to send it back intact as part of getting our charge reversed. What a way to ruin what should have been a good memory for us. One website estiamted his income form doing this at $49,000 per year.

I just got a call from Greg also # 702.448.4541 and he also said he was from the recorders office and our marriage certificate was ready to view online.... I had told him that I was having trouble with the website and he told me he would be happy to take care of the certificate for me for $69.00... I fell for it... Right after I got off the phone I called Clark County Courthouse and they said it could have been a third party affiliate...Do they actually send you the real marriage certificate though? Did anyone receive one?

How funny that all of us have spoken with "Greg". I was told I could have my copy mailed today for $69. Asked "Greg" why the recorders office shows it to be $7, he said that was just for a copy of the license. Told him I would have to call back and order. Pulled my paperwork that the minister gave us last week, and it's $15. Called Greg back. He answered "recorders office". Asked if the price of $15 was incorrect. He said "no it is not".

I got scammed for 99$, I realized an hour after providing my info to Greg that it was a scam, and canceled my card but sadly he had already charged it :(. Wish I had seen this beforehand.  He represented himself as Las Vegas records dept so I figured it was legit.  I am so pissed!

I got a call from 702 448 4541 from Recorded Documents in Las Vegas. I didn't answer so they left a message. The guy sounded nice and polite. He was looking for someone with my last name, but got the first name totally wrong. I have no clue how they got my number and (correct) last name and (wrong) first name, but I know for sure there is no reason for them to contact me. I live in Canada, have never been to Nevada, and have been married many years ago in Canada. I have no business or ties with anything or anyone in the USA. My gut tells me it's a scam.
