If you really owed a debt, you'd have received dunning letters in the mail. You never get a call prior to being served - the process server just shows up.
Per the FDCPA, you should never pay any caller who refuses to mail a debt validation letter to you proving you owe a debt and they have the legal right to collect said debt. Refusal to mail said DVL is a violation of the FDCPA. Please do report your caller to the FTC, FCC, FBI, Dept of Justice and your state's Attorney General.
