I get a call from Alan King stating I need to call my lawyer or send money.  When I try to return the call I cannot get through.  He has some of my personal information obtained through the internet.  I feel this is a scam.  When I ask him to send information he states in needs to be taken care of today.

I've been getting calls from this number for weeks first they said they were cashnet but when I told the operator I had already paid them off she said no it was quickcash...so which one is it.  And when I asked for documentations of who they were before I made any payment they refused and said that they would send it to me after the fact and I also asked for quickcashes phone number and guess what they refused that one too.  I ended speaking to a manager who was equally as rude and thereatening I just hung up!

Unfortunately, a scam related to payday lending has emerged in the past few months.  This is not merely lenders overcharging for their product.  Instead information obtained about payday loan customers for collection purposes is being used to ROB people.

The Players:

United Pay (4494 Southside Ave., Apt. 203, Jacksonville, FL 32216-5484) or “TUPS” is the focal point of the collection process.  The company is owned by Piyush and Shreya Patel who use the Jacksonville address as their home address.  However, the collectors all work for a subcontracted call center in Ahderabad, India, call Innovations Infocom.  The call centers are connected through VOIP technology that (a) causes a U.S. phone number to appear in their victims’ caller ID’s and (b) allows them to leave U.S. call-back numbers (including toll-free numbers) that automatically forward to India.  Payments made go to a Western Union account in Florida which we believe is controlled by the Patels or through other methods, i.e., credit card processing, which we believe are controlled from India.

How the Scam Works:

Originally, this was a straight, if obscenely unprofessional, collections effort regarding certain companies' payday loans.  But callers would pretend to be federal agents, bank examiners and other powerful people and threaten immediate arrest unless the borrower immediately paid somewhere between 3 and 4 times the original loan amount.  Payments had to be made by Western Union Quick Collect to a location in Florida (presumably to be collected by the Patels).  (Lately, they have begun accepting credit card and, reportedly, check-by-phone and even ACH payments.)  Calls would be made 20 or more times per day to the same borrower, along with his/her employer, co-workers and references.  Profanity was commonplace and even physical threats not unheard of.  Rarely would the caller identify which loan was in default.

For the most part these collection efforts were unsuccessful.  Most people realize that the FBI does not collect $300 loans.  Even if they did, the educational requirements and oral assessments necessary for entry into the Bureau would have barred nearly all of the collectors involved in this scam from entry.  In fact, the collection effort continued only because that one person in twenty that fell for the scam paid so much more than was actually owed that it was worth it to the organizers to keep it in play.

But the scam has mutated further.  By purchasing delinquent loans, United Pay and Innovations Infocom come into possession of the confidential information of tens of thousands of Americans.  Because these consumers “owe” on at least one loan, collectors are able to convince borrowers they are in serious civil and criminal trouble over the delinquent account.  Collectors call and pretend to represent the “Financial Crimes Investigation Unit” (though many still lapse and claim to be FBI agents and/or employees of the “Ministry of Justice.”)  Although they occasionally identify the original lender, more often they claim the debt in question is from 2005 or earlier and that the lender was “U.S. Federal Bank,” or "U.S. National Bank” - neither of which exists.  Invariably, they claim “an affidavit has been filed” and demand immediate payment of hundreds or even thousands of dollars to avoid arrest and imprisonment.

In one variation of the scam, they claimed to be acting on behalf of a California attorney.  However, they refuse to give the name and the "Bar ID" number they will give does not correspond to any attorney listed with the California Board of Bar Examiners.  Even more ridiculous, the number they give for the "attorney" is one we KNOW connects to the Indian call center and they even answered it "U.S. National Bank" rather than as a law office.

Most recently, they have begun claiming to be the consumers' legitimate creditors.  In one case, we settled two loans for a customer with a legitimate collection agency – only to see the settlement fail when these people called the client.  When our client didn’t recognize the name “U.S. Federal Bank” she asked if they meant the two loans she was scheduled to pay later that week.  Of course, the collector said, they were. He then kept calling her office until reaching her boss and telling him that – as the owner of the computer she used to make her application – he was legally responsible for the debt.  Incredibly, her boss accept this outrageous, highly illegal claim and threatened to fire our client.  In the end, the client sent these thieves nearly triple what she had legitimately settled her debts at and still owes the actual creditors!

But the worst is yet to come.  The person that gets scared and pays will be contacted again within weeks with more demands.  Why?  Because this is no longer about resolving debts.  It is about “plucking a pigeon” to borrow an old-fashioned phrase.  Payment only encourages them to continue the scam.  At least one person we know of has been bilked of over $4000.

This number was left for me to call and the call was placed from 718 205 2025.
The first call I receved in January, 2010, his name was Scott Williams.  A india speaking man saying I owed money borrowed from Fast cash Internatinal.  Couldn't give me any details or mail me anything.  I told him I would send a money order when I got paid.  He wouldn't acceot a money order. I didn't return anymore of his phone calls. I saved his name on my cell phone under Scott Williams so I wouldn't answer the calls.
3/3/2010, I recieved a call from Alan King from the same number and same man. He told me to call or have my attorney call 724-365-9968.  I didn't return the call and called Cashnet Payday Loans, 888-802-9075 to report this man.  They referred me to their fraud department 1 866-254-3581.  They didn't have any record of me having an account there and said don't return these calls it is fraud.

7243659968 called my cell phone leaving a message for Arlinda Rodrigues which is not me. I called them back to say they had the wrong number. They had broken speech much like call centers in India. I told them I was not the person they were calling they had the wrong number. They propositioned me offering $500.00 stating they had on good authority I was a prostitute. I have gotten calls for Arlinda before so I think my cell number was hers everyone has been respectful in the past. I have changed my cell number. I have also reported the number to law enforcement and the FBI.

I also recieved several phone calls. Two at 5 in the morning! I got this number only because the guy left a message saying to call back or else! No number shows up on ID. They say they are attorneys wanting me to repay a loan from a quickcash site. This transaction never took place. I never took out any loans. They are telling me if I don't repay this now they are sending out their investigators and i will have to prove my case in court! I said go for it! I know this is a scam. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? I want this fool to go down! Oh yeah, when I called the number, a woman was who I talked to and she hung up after I asked for a business license number to turn them in! She tried to tell me she was in Ca too which clearly they are not!

I don't understand how they got my work number.  I have had a payday loan before but not with cashnet.  When I go to this website it looks like student loan stuff.  Has anyone else taken out an online payday loan?  Just wondering and trying to figure out how they got my information..this is embarrassing to have someone call my work.  Any clues?

What if I don't call cashnet to file a claim?  What happens then?

I also notice that everyone is posting very recently which means all of this just started huh?

These people are some of the biggest CROOKS on earth, they will burn in Hell one day.  The way that I became involved with them at all is,I was looking for a debt consolidation loan,at the time,I was stupid,I found them the were listed as A1consolidation.  They wanted a down payment,or they called it 6 months down, and they would loan me the 5,000.  They asked for this because my credit was not very good,I fell for it,sent them $964.00,they were supposed to deposit the 5,ooo in my account the same day, well, needless to say, they didn't,their website no longer exsisted, their address were bogus,etc...I filed complaints in Michigan,Florida, and New Jersey with the bbb, fcc, fbi, you name it.  NOW,I get a call (thought I'd never hear from them again, but they really got some balls) they are now saying they lent me $964,and they want it back...OMG!  I hung up,called everybody on the case, and let them know.  I just cannot believe this!  I hope these people get caught,I have made some progress as of today, they were able to trace an ACH from my account, where I haven't been so careful with, because they have been taking money from my damn account, which is now closed.  I can only pray that they will be caught one day,and prosecuted to the fullest. Be careful, please with all your personal info.  This has taught me a BIG lesson,I am a hard-a** now,and hope my eyes are open enough to not get caught-up in this situation again.

Debt Collector
Well, I almost fell for the scam. But, luckily I did my homework--like imputing this number.  They called and left me a seriously threatening message, and I did call them back.  I found out that by asking numberous questions, they couldn't provide believable information.  I got enough information from them to prove that ALL their information is BOGGESS!  (Although they provided "real" addresses, company names, phone numbers, etc. that are traceable, but just WRONG).  Every time I asked them a legitimate question-- about who they are and who they represent they paused every single time prior to responding.  It seems to me that they are a MASSIVE family of CON ARTISTS who will sooner than later be found and taken to court themselves!   They are in NO WAY going to get away with what they are doing!  I have meesages recorded on my phone, and enough provided information to press charges.  Don't let them waste your time like they did mine.  They tried to convince me that I had a payday loan (which I've never ever had in my life) and that they had all my personal identity information, etc.  I have all bank statements and internet spam logs to prove this never happened.  Keep your eyes open.  I closed my bank accounts just in case.  I say GOOD LUCK to them as they get arrested in this ILLEGAL operation they are trying to pull!!!!!!!!!!!!
