Debt Collector
Missed 2 calls - called back and a very cordial man answered I explained I get a 100 calls a day for the deadbeats that had my phone number prior. He said he couldn't look up by name because they are nation wide and have thousands of accounts, didn't identify the agency, but when I asked if this was "Solicitation or collection" and he said neither so the "car repo company" that others are saying does fit his response.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

originally a 200 debt w/capital one in 1997  now the debt has become $6000 in 2014,account has been sold to numerous collection agencies but Portfolio Recovery has been the most anal, my question is, if the $200 debt couldn't be paid in 1997, do they really think $6000 can be paid in 2014 or a settlement of $3000????? R-E-A-L-L-Y, don't think so, if anything the original debt I will consider.

Called me several times and when i answered they would hang up on me. I waited til about the 5th time they did this and decided to call them back when a woman answered claiming that they were a "Ed's Cash Advance and Loan" company. I politely told them about the numerous calls and hang ups and she apologized and asked for my name for there was a reason that they were calling. I have never taken out a loan or a cash advance so I knew it was not me and simply told them they had the wrong person. I then called back an hour later (blocking my number this time) to hear that the company's name is now "Buddy's Bail bonds". I confronted the same lady who told me it was Ed's cash advance and she hung up on me. I called back again, (since they seem to love to call me all the time) and I got a simple "Hello?" on the other line and I of course said Hi. She then hung up again.

This phone number is Del Mar Recovery they are company trying to do a respossion of a vehicle. They do not do bill collections they just try to recover vehicles that are not paid for. I received a call from them today in regards to a family members debt, that used my name as a reference. I asked him (David) to remove my name and to not call me again as I haven't spoke with that family member in over 9 months.

Called today. I'm guessing from reading it is for someone else who lived at my address regarding a car payment. They don't leave a message ever. If I'm not at work, I may just answer and tell them what I think.

Have received 3 calls from this # looking for my daughter,whom they have already contacted! Told me my daughter was in BIG TROUBLE! Was VERY rude! I told them NOT to call me back and take my # OFF their calling list.  The person they are looking for is in no way related to me. I will take this further if there are more calls. Already contacted the local police about this. I DO have rights!
