I too just received a call on my cell phone on June 23 at 1308 hrs. from an "agent" with the "US Treasury Department".  This individual had a strong indian accent in which I could not understand.  I could not understand him so I gave him my work number and he called me back at my desk.  He stated that I owed back taxes from 2008 in the amount of $1545.75.  I told him that I had filed my taxes and without contest to the amounts that I filed and received back from the IRS.  I asked to speak to his supervisor and he refused stating he was the supervisor.  I told him I did not owe any money and he became very abrasive in our brief conversation.  He stated that a warrant would be issued and a Federal Agent would be coming to act on the warrant.  I told him that I would be contacting law enforcement upon the completion of our call and he hung up.  I have contacted the police to report the call.

I too received the same messages on a Friday and as I was listening to them for a third time (because I couldn't understand them) on Saturday morning I get a call from the same number so I answered it. The gentleman was VERY invasive and when I told him I wasn't giving him any information he said "fine, your husband will be arrested in 40 minutes" and hung up so I called my local police to report it.

Got one these calls today from a woman identifying herself as a paralegal with the US Attorney's office saying a legal action was being filed against me and I must call back immediately. Tried to return call and just got message except for one time when phone was picked up but no one spoke - multiple voices in background. Accents were mildly Asian but
English was pretty fluent. Glad to know it's a scam. Call showed as coming from California.

I got the same call earlier today. I was first left a message by a Belinda Wilson with a heavy Indian accent that she was from the US Treasury Legal Department and was calling about a legal action that had been put into motion on my name. It was very important that I call her back. She ended the message with God Bless. That was my first red flag.

When I did call back the number given, a man with a similarly heavy Indian accent answered and looked me up by my phone number. The US Government works with Social Security Numbers, not phone numbers. That was my second red flag.

Then he proceed to tell me that I owed taxes from 2010 and there was a warrant out for my arrest. I told him that I had not received any communication from the IRS to let me know that I owed anything. It is now 4 years later, why would I not have heard a thing until there was a warrant out for my arrest. There was a long pause and then he asked, "Do you know how much you owe?" I told him I didn't owe anything and he "corrected" me a stupidly large amount.

He told me that I needed to pay this amount today within that phone call. I told him that I didn't have that kind of money and he asked how much I had. I told him I'd have to make some calls, and one to my attorney, and I'd have my attorney call him. He hung up on me. So this... isn't real. Don't panic. I hope somebody catches these creeps.

I received four calls from 760-592-6191 threatening me that I was going to be arrested for back taxes owed.  I have been in business for years and could easily tell by his unprofessional manner and thick foreign accent that he was not legitimate.  Please use this information to help catch these people.  They probably have done this to many more and may have even gotten money from some.  Thank you.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

I did not answer, but the voice mail left was from a heavily accented Indian male I could barely understand stating that he was from the US Department of Treasury.  I called back and got voice mail.  I left a message that I was calling the 800 number on the IRS gov't website and sending an email.  No response.

Calling three or four times stating that my husband needed to contact them in one hour.  Very heavy accent.  The last call that came I answered and screamed into the phone to stop calling.  No more calls.  I am so sick of these criminals.

Yea same here. An Indian man with a heavy accent on a scratchy internet phone named Chris Evens called ON A SATURDAY claiming an enforcement action on my name. He said if I didn't have the time to call back, I should have my "readed" attorney call him. He said ignoring this message may leave me in a "legal mess". Oh so professional!

Someone who identified herself as Suzette Brown from the Department of Legal Affairs, US Treasury said I need to call them or have my attorney call them.  I checked the internet and it looks like a scam so I did not return the call.  Not really sure what they want.

There is a fairly common "tax scam" being practiced by scammers in both Canada and the USA.
USA tax payers should read this:
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Tax-Scams-Consumer-Alerts
Note particularly the links at that site, warning of the scam!

A shorter explanation is Scam  #11, as shown at
http://phonehelp.2truth.com/facts.html

That site also shows how other 800notes visitors have reduced the number of telephone scams and telemarketing calls they receive.  (And, a link to Amazon's phone blocker devices and apps is there).

Yeah, same message. I called and they claimed to be US Treasury Legal Dept. and I was going to be arrested.  Demanded the name of my tax attorney (which I've never used). I asked for corroboration that they had the "right"
person and got stonewalled. I offered to pay when I got a bill but they just hung up on my.  Called back again and got
an answering machine.

Checked my credit report and it's clean. No action by anyone anywhere against me.  I really can't figure out what the idiots at the "el centro" number hoped to accomplish.

They keep calling repeatedly and leave threatening messages about a lawsuit telling you that you need to return their call or have your attorney call them or otherwise you could end up in a legal "mess".  The caller ID shows "El Centro CA" and the caller has a heavy accent.

Caller ID for this caller shows "El Centro, CA" .  They keep calling repeatedly and leave a message stating that they need you to call them back about a legal matter and that if you don't call them you should have your attorney call them or else you can end up in a legal "mess".  They have a heavy accent and state their name is Justin Black.
