This is the Chase fraud department.  Applied for a Chase credit card online and got a letter to call this department in order to verify my identity.  Never asked for SSN.  Called Chase customer service and and asked them to verify the number belonged to Chase, which they did.

I work for Chase. To be exact, I am from the Chase Fraud Prevention department. We are not third party company, we work for Chase directly. Our main goal is to zero out fraud applications. Hence, we ask security questions that will establish the identity of the applicant.

Chase do cater a lot of card brands(Southwest,United, Intercontinental, Marriot, Amazon, BP, AARP, Zappos and etc. You can look those up on chase.com) and as a partner of those brands we are also expected to represent them brands too secondary to Chase. The number is valid 200%.

I received a call from (800) 278-8830, the fraud department for Chase.  I'm always suspicious and I won't call anything but the number on the back of my card.  When I called that number, it turns out that the phone call was legitimate in reference to a new card that I applied for.  I told them they should only give out the numbers on their card!

Or go to your bank and asked them if they received any application in your name from Amazon.com. Since you never applied for a credit card, your caller looks like a credit card fraud that spoofed a legit number to call you.

Block that number. If you get a call from another number, the wimps who are part of the card service scam are calling you. Just don't pay attention to them.

I received a letter from Chase Fraud Operations telling me that they received an application for Amazon.com Visa Platinum credit card reflecting my name and my social security number.  In order to verify the application, I was asked to call 1-800-278-8830. I didn't  apply for a credit card and I don't even have an account with them. I didn't call the number yet, Anyone can tell me if you have the same experience? What I should do?

I got a call from 1-800-2270158 about a Chase - Amazon credit card that I had applied for, but when I called back, it was some talk line!  I did call Chase Fraud prevention and they took care of it.  But I am puzzled as to why the person who was checking to see if I was the person I claimed to be left that strange number.

Legit-- they're calling from Chase Bank/Chase credit cards. If you applied for either a United Airlines or Continental Chase card, they call to verify some info before approving your credit line. They don't ask you for your SSN,

This number is legitimate, I was very suspicious as well when I received the call but called Chase on two different numbers asking for their fraud dept's direct line and both times they gave this number to me.  They apparently don't receive incoming calls on the weekend so I will wait until tomorrow.

I received a call from them as well.  Not sure if they serve other companies, but they run the Fraud Prevention Department for Continental Airlines.

I applied for a Continental Airlines' credit card, and accidentally used an invalid address.  This prompted a call from 800 number above.

Yes. This number is true and from a ID prevention service center. I got this call because I used a different address on my recent CC application. They just wanted to verify me by checking my several old home addresses and home phone number, and my business number....

I called back through Chase's main line 1-800-686-5657 and was transferred to their applications fruad dept. to confirm that this was legit. The rep was able to look up the reference number and tell me that it was for a Disney card.  Someone had fraudulently applied for a credit card in a name that resembled my name.  I am glad they caught it.

This is the weirdest call.     I received  a call from this number and called back with my reference number.  I was asked a series of questions where it seemed obvious that they KNEW the answers already to things which are generally public knowledge, but would be tedious for 1 NON-BANK/CREDIT CARD COMPANY/CREDIT BUREAU to compile.  For example, multiple previous addresses where I lived, but never owned or was a renter (lived with a friend, CC bills went there), mother's birthday, employer (they gave me these as multiple choice or half-answer questions where I answered the other half or the correct multiple choice wtf?).    Basically they told me that someone had applied for a CC in my name.  He did ask for my social and DOB which I did not provide.  He left off telling me to change my passwords online and inform the credit bureaus of this situation.  So weird.  If this is NOT legit, these guys are good????

To the best of my knowledge this is legit.  If you signed up for some sort of ID Theft prevention service, requested alerts from the credit bureaus, or if you (or someone pretending to be you) entered a new or misspelled address, name, etc, on a submitted credit card application, then that would be the source of this call.

First they asked me if I had applied for credit from <insert company>, (I had). They will then ask you around three security questions about you so they can check your answers to confirm your identity.  They did not, and should not, ask for your SSN.

If you have a phobia of ID theft like I do, you can rest at ease, just be sure to never give out your SSN, even if they are legit an individual employee can never be confirmed to be trustworthy.

I received a call from "Angela at Chase Fraud Prevention Department." I wasn't comfortable giving out any personal info to her, although the call sounded legit. She asked that I call 1-800-278-8830 and gave me a reference #.

I went to Chase's website, but couldn't find this number listed, so I called the main number for Chase credit card services, and they verified that this is, indeed, a legitimate number for Chase. When I called the 8830 number, they asked me to verify my place of employment and DOB, nothing that couldn't be found on the internet, somewhere, I'm sure.

I'm guessing that this is not a number for Chase, but rather a service they outsource for their credit cards, which is why it's not published on their site (and why other companies seem to give out the same #). Still, it makes one leery of fraud or identity theft. Seems to me they could find a better alternative?

"If you have a phobia of ID theft like I do, you can rest at ease, just be sure to never give out your SSN, even if they are legit an individual employee can never be confirmed to be trustworthy."

Credit reports are linked as much or more to name/address and other history, as they are linked to SSN.  Guarding only your SSN is a good idea, but it is only one of many pieces of information scammers need to proceed.  The misconception that SSN is the end-all, be-all piece for ID theft will hopefully diminish as years pass...and hopefully ID theft will diminish, too.
