Damn!  Just fell for this after an answering machine message. Said there was fraud on our account, we have no BOA credit cards so could only be bank account. I was so dumb as to actually give then not only the debit card number, but the expire date and 3 digit code! Just didn't feel right so I called the number on back of the debit card immediately after I hung up the phone. So end result is that it was indeed fraud...posing as a fraud check! Now my debit card is cancelled and I am monitoring our account.
NEVER call this number back.  It is a fraud scam!!

Jason, I don't know why you think the 800-383-0618 number is not valid.  I called Bank of America and asked them if it was a legitimate number for their fraud department and they told me that it was.

I got a call at work from "Unknown Number", which I did not answer. They left me a message asking me to call 1-800-383-0618 about some potentially fraudulent charges on my 123 Bank Americard Visa, which I do not even have. So, I ignored it.  They called me back about a week later and left the exact same message. I'm sure this is just another phishing scam.

I find it very fishy how BOA uses these numbers to call you to inform you that there has been fraudulent activity on your account. They called me 3 times in one day, and then I received an email. Of course, I would never give my credit card information to an unknown number. DO NOT GIVE YOUR INFORMATION OUT. BUT DO NOT IGNORE THIS ALERT EITHER.

I called the number on the back of my credit card to ensure my account was safe. In fact, it wasn't. There had been a 300 dollar purchase on my credit card which I did not make.

To be on the safe side, I would never call these numbers back, but simply have the common sense to know that these alerts may be accurate. Call the number on the back of your card, ONLY.

I also logged into my online account which showed me the exact fraudulent purchase. But to be on the safe side, only communicate to BOA through the number on your card or the number they have listed on their website.

So if you get these calls, just be sure to double check with BOA that everything is alright.

I had a very strange experience with this number.  No one called me from it, but I was trying to set up a travel notification with Bank of America, I couldn't for this particular card, and the number provided to call on the website for this was 800-383-0618.  The first thing that happens, I am asked for my card number, put on hold before I can even say why I'm calling, being told they were having trouble finding the account, which makes no sense, so I ask for a manager, put on hold some more, talk to the manager to who claims the agent was finishing up another account.  I told her I needed to put in a travel notification.  At no time was I told this was the fraud department, btw, though I suppose it makes sense that they should be the ones to know about your travel plans.  She then asks me a variety of questions that do not involve information that I've given to Bank of America.  Some are so ridiculous I just plain refused to answer, but still managed to get the travel notification done.  I called the number on the back of my card, they verified this is a legit number and I expressed my concerns because the person setting the travel notification refused to tell me where they were getting the info to verify this info from, and I should have a way to make sure that their source has correct information to begin with.  Definitely suspicious but apparently a legit BofA number.

it is legit but very suspicious due to the lack of proffesionalism on the other end. BOA noticed irregular activity after i made a large purchase online late at night. i got this call and hung up and called number on back of my card. sure enough, BOA (after having me verify my license # because i was calling about suspicious and potentially phishing scam calls, they probably thought i was a potential scammer just trying to do some homework on them) verified this number and then i chekced my email and sure enough there was a BOA fraud alert email in my inbox as well. i DID call this number back after verifying and having BOA assure me in writing by email that this number is their fraud department (im in law school so i get everything in writing now lol) and I even emailed BOA about this experience telling them that such unporfessional behavior by people in their fraud department actually leads to the oppossite intended effect, with customers not trusting the fraud rep and instead going on the defensive, and that delays us from confirming or denying having made the large purchases they are inquiring about. Feel safe though knowing that this number IS legit BOA fraud dept. and when in doubt then just call BOA and ask for a VALID number to call their fraud dept and your worries will be put to bed! sorry for the bad spelling, been up late due to final exams! - cheers LRK

I've had the same thing happen.
This number is the fraud investigation / customer services unit of Bank America.

However, when in doubt .. always call the bank directly using the number on the back of your CC.

I got a piece of mail with this number. They know my balance and want to help lower my payments as we have gone over. It seems legit but also too good to be true! I'd be only paying in about 10,000 instead of the 33,000 owed!

Some guys have been trying to get my current Credit card info, and I also just got this email. When the recording started asking me to put my security code and  exp date I hung up...... Same guys very good at what they do... Beware, these guys are the best crooks I have seen yet.

Beware they will call you and say they are from the fraud dept also and start asking for info off the card..
Then they called and said they were from a company where they stolen credit card number had been used and they wanted to put money back on the card so they needed the new number... Tell them to send you a check.

That is a REAL NUMBER.

What might not be legit is someone impersonating that number. It isn't hard to "spoof" caller id.

first off, i wasn't called - this number was embedded in an email that i am 99.999999% certain was an official bank of america email.

i was freaking out because i saw these reports of phishing AFTER calling and giving all of my information to this number.

A few things, however.

1. If these were scammers they had the ability to close down my account immediately after I requested they do so. I was calling at literally 2:45am.

2. I've looked at the email and these scammers would have to be very sophisticated, as the email matches BOA emails exactly and the code within the email matches official BOA emails perfectly with some dynamic coding meaning it was a diff email.

Also, here is a tweet from the official Bank of America twitter feed:

@leandrolanzoni Please call 1.800.383.0618 to report your card as lost and to request a new one. ^mp

So yeah, I think the reason it sounds so unprofessional is that this is a VISA call center and they handle fraud/lost/stolen issues for many banks or credit providers. This is why bank of america might not have that number handy when you call them on the phone.

hope this helps ease someone out there, my blood pressure was through the roof for a few minutes...

I called the number back, since it was on my caller ID history.  I would not have given them my full card number had it turned out to be someone claiming to be a credit fraud department.  However, it was a market research company that my wife had had dealings with in the past.  This leads me to believe that it is a telemarketing company that has been outsourced to do this work, and credit fraud protection outsourcing as well.  Call at your own risk, although it may be legit.  If they start asking for too much information, such as a complete credit card number, I would not advise giving it to them and call the number on the back of your card instead, just as many others have recommended here.

This is actually Bank of America. In order to verify this number with them, call the number on the back of your credit card and ask to be sent to the fraud department. The regular customer support agents cannot confirm this number for some reason. It is indeed Bank of America's fraud department.

It was a real call. I received a call from number 678-797-7000 and left a voice message. It asked me to call Card Services at 1-800-383-0618. I called back both numbers and I did not feel comfortable to give them my cc numbers to them. Then I called the number back of the card of Bank of America. There was a credit card charge of my card. But the company was trying to use a wrong expiration dates and my card was HOLD for further transaction. They asked me some security questions and removed hold from my cc.
Thanks for checking cc company.
