This number (800) 410-1393 keeps calling me saying they are from AT&T and wishing me to have a good day. When I call the number back, they say I've won a trip to Bahamas. I don't want them calling again

To Gilles:  Aren't you special???  You can't assume that gambling and buying sh*t you can't afford is the reason for the debt.  In most cases, people incur a debt and something happens, like a job loss, or illness or some other problem.   You have a lot of balls to stand there on your high horse and make these stupid statements!  Most of the time,  these are not legitimate debts like service fees and late fees charged after the principle was paid, etc...  It's much more complicated than "stop gambling and buying sh*t that you can't afford".   The next time you get the urge to say something stupid like this,  take a fart instead and keep your big piehole shut because you are not contributing anything except supporting 'bottom feeders' who "make their money" collecting on old debts."

Allied Interstate is a debt collection company.  They will buy old debts for a couple of cents and hastle the owners of these debts until they collect some money from them.  Make sure you know the statute of limitations on debt collection for your state.  They bought a debt for me that was over ten years old and are calling me in excess of 12 times daily including weekends.  They threaten me with anything you can think of, trying  to make me pay.  This debt, by the way, consisted of a yearly 'service charge' that went on with late fees and penalties for about six months when I never actually used the card.  Of course these 'bottom feeders' don't want to hear that.  I still can't comprehend how these people can make a career of calling people and intimidating them into giving up their food money so they don't get sued; when actually, they can't get sued if the debt is past the statute of limitations. (3 years in Florida).  Someday soon, the law makers are going to open their normally closed eyes and stop this crazy debt collection crap.

Any Debt Collector can ONLY call a number TWICE a day.... NOT 3,4,5,6, or 15 times a day... That also includes calling your work.  If they call your cell/home number 2 or more times a day, they CAN NOT in any way call your work.  That is FEDERAL LAW, but they don't want you to know that. I was inside One Main Financial one morning, and one of the lady's there said out loud... "Well, lets see who I can harass today".  The fact is, you know you owe it, and you are doing what you can to pay it, but you surely don't need someone harassing you every dang minute.

I agree you should live within your means. However, I think the point of most of the post is folks are unlawfully being called because they don't owe the debt. That is the case with me.....they got my name confuse with someone else...and they keep calling me..now because I don't truly owe they debt they don't call me at my place of employment because they don't have that info....of course the person who had my cell phone number prior to me name was very very similar to mine...(lucky me) so I'm getting all of her calls..I could get my number change but I don't really want to because so many folks have that number...and I 've only recently started getting the calls...like someone must have brought her debt...because I 've had this number forever...when I first got the number I used to get calls all the time from her friends and again because our names are similar It would take me and the person on the line to realize we didn't know each other...anyhow...that eventually stop but getting these people to stop is close to impossible...lucky for me I don't let it concern me and I just don't answer the phone and delete the voicemails...no big deal...annoying absolutely!...but what I am to do let it disrupt my life....NO...and just a FYI 40k/year is not a lot of money...I make 125,000 and don't have a credit cards... If you can't afford it don't get it!

I got a call from them because I ordered a pair of shoes, got them and they were the wrong size, so I'm not going to pay my pay-pal account now since they will be reimbursing the cost of the shoes. The gentleman I spoke to was actually quite understanding and surprisingly friendly. It's all fine and dandy to complain about people calling you all the time if they are a collection agency, but just remember, these guys/girls make a living from collecting money that you owe (them), your bills. I've never been in trouble financially so I don't know what it's like but I can say that if you didn't get yourself into financial problems in the first place, you wouldn't be stressed about them calling you, because they wouldn't be. It's a fact. Quit gambling and buying sh*t you can't afford. Don't get a credit card unless you make 40k a year. Get a debit Visa card instead. It works the same way... if you don't have money, don't spend money.

Well they called me about my ex-husband.  We have been divorced since 1999!!  The woman I spoke to when I called them back said she would "make a note in the file."  And they called the next day...so either she was lying or the people who are calling can't read!

this practice is illegal. Most states have a statue of limations on Dept, in Maryland it is only 3 years. So if there is no legal judgment against you simply tell them the dept is not valid and to stop calling, if they continue you can sue them according to fair dept law

I am so sorry to hear that STYX11. I have not received a single call after informing them I did not want them to call and one is from oversees. Not to mention I very verbally stated that I will contact the FTC and State Attorney General office if they did not stop.

Calispo is absolutely correct! That is LAW! I had one to contact me at my work and I politely told them that they were not to contact me at work in which they knew, I then contacted the FTC. These creditors are bullies but do not think we are smart enough to know they can be fined for their wrongful actions...

They've called me since Sunday, and it is now Friday. I've answered a few times and the robot hangs up on me before I can say anything. They won't leave a message, and I don't even know if it's the same company because I've never spoken to any of them. I'm going to try the letter. Wish me luck.

I am getting these calls and am not appreciating it! I do have a PayPal but it is a debit card. I have a Lowes card without a balance. What in hell could they possibly want? They can call as many times as they want - and they do call many, many times a day and night. Sorry, I just do not ever answer a call without a recognizable name attached!
I think I will try that reverse harassment deal the other poster posted. It sound like fun and a good way to get back a bit.
I see that these banks are a***oles to the nth degree. I hope if someone does owe them money that they never get paid because we are all already paying them whether we want to or not in the form of bailouts, etc. Yet, I don't see them trying to help anybody or bailing anyone who owes them out!

My phone has not rung for three and a half weeks now. If they call from another number, I will add that number to the list of forwarded calls. IT IS NOT A BLOCK! Your account was sold to these collectors so if you plan to file bankruptcy, make sure you include the collector as one of your litigants, as he can sue you in court even if the original was discharged. Please dont give advice on something that you have not yet done yourself. For $2.95, I can find the new number even if it is unlisted, so changing your number is stupid.

Oprion 1:  Change your phone number, if you block them they will just use another number(they have hundreds).  It is easier just to change your number and less painful.  It really is not that hard to do so and there may be a nominal fee.

Option 2: Call them back and inform them that you are not the person they are looking for and you do not know who this person is and that they have call a cell phone.

Option 3: File Bankruptcy as this will eliminate ALL of them from calling you.

The point is they will not stop calling unless you do something about it as it will keep getting sold to other companies and the process continues.

YOU DO NOT want to contact them as you as that will show you have had contact with them and it will update this on your credit report.

For all you know, these calls are being made from another country on behalf of an american collection co. They have no regard for US law as it does not pertain to them. So for that matter, you can write all the cease and desist letters you want, only to have them ignored. I have over 20 delinquent accts, due to my medical condition, and they were calling me non-stop as well. I read someones post about "call forwarding select", where you can forward these calls to another number without forwarding your regular incoming calls. I checked my phone carrier (comcast) and sure enough, I had it all along. Beings I have so many, I make them call each other and my phone never rings . You can divert the calls to a pizza shop or wherever you like. Do not forward to the police or any government phone as although forwarding is legal, it is not legal to forward to them.
