This is a scam. These people send out letters to people that they have addresses on fishing to get you to use their credit card. You will receive an Un-marked envelope that has a flimsy piece of plastic in it with no bar code that says, "You have been pre-aproved for a MasterCard from Citi with a credit line of $7,000.00 and cash advance of $1,400.00. Please call us if you don't want this card." Ok, so now you call them at the above number and then they want the card number they sent you and then personal information. DO NOT GIVE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE. If they were a legitimate company they would already know this information because they paid for a credit check from Eqifax, Trans Union, Experian or Innovis on you and thousands others. These people, (The four credit reporting Companies) are make money selling your credit report to prospective Insurance companies or Credit Card companies who will offer you a guaranteed offer. This offer is no more guaranteed then Santa Clause if you don't have a chimney. You can opt out of these mail offers by this link https://www.optoutprescreen.com/?rf=t or go to the FTC Fair Trade Commission Web site  where they have a direct link to the Opt out site. I highly recommend you do this. My credit report is no one else's business but mine and people I have credit with and certainly not for Insurance companies and credit card companies on a fishing expedition that want my business that I never applied to.

The same thing just happened to us, Ayers to Macy's, Macy's to mastercard.  We canceled the card and we're lucky to have noticed it considering that you receive so many credit card solitiations with fake cards in them that just get thrown away.

I can't speak to the legalities of Citibanks tactics but I find them unethtical and devious. How far are corporations allowed to go? I find the fact that they opened a brand new credit card and a $5,000 credit line with our information and without our consent apalling. I shouldn't have to "opt-out" from a credit card which I've never owned before considering how important credit is and knowing that the more credit you have open the worse your credit score. I will NEVER bank with Citibank under any circumstances in the future.

I just remembered - Macys bought out Strawbridges, so any Strawbridge account has probably been sold to Citi. I couldnt figure it out at first, since I still have my Macys card.

Yes, the same thing happened to me. I called and had it cancelled through the phone number provided. I then wanted to find out why I was sent this card, so I called Citi's normal customer service line. When I provided the man with my number, he put me on hold and forwarded me along to the automated number that is listed on the number! I cannot believe he wouldnt even give me an explanation. Incredible.

The same thing happened to me.  The card was in my maiden name, though, so that was a red flag.
I called the number on the back of the card and the digital voice asked for the last four digits of my SS#.  I didn't reply; it kept asking and finally I was forwarded to an actual person.  Kevin, I believe.
I told him I wasn't pleased to get the card in the mail and I wasn't going to give the last four digits of my SSN, so he asked for the last 3 numbers of the back of the card.  I asked for the account to be closed and for a confirmation letter to be sent to my home.

It really was pretty easy, and only took a minute.
I just hope that a lot of people don't have credit trouble because of this shifty business practice.

Got the same card and did a little research - it stems from CITI buying out a list of 3.5 Million Macy's charge customer credit cards that hadn't been used for 2-4 years.  They are under investigation for this.

Not wanting to give personal information such as last 4 of SS#, like many others on this site, I went a different route.  I called the customer service number on the back of the card and asked them to 1) close the account and 2) remove me from any and all solicitations.  The only information I had to provide was the numbers on the card - nothing more.  So, I suggest you close the card that way then file a complaint as I will do next.

I'm wondering how many people thought it was just a solicitation credit card and simply threw it away leaving it open for someone to steal not only this credit card but their identity on many othe levels.  I will be sure to stay clear of CitiCard and Macy's who sold the list for their unethical business practices.

I also received a new credit card from Citi that was issued without my permission. When I called 800-432-0282 I was prompted to enter the last 4 digits of my ss#. Now I'm afraid someone will open other accounts, etc under it. Has anyone found out any information about this?

I received a new credit card in the mail from Citi that was issued without my permission.

This number 800-432-0282 was listed on the back of the card. At first I thought it's some kind of fraud. I called the customer service number on the back of the card, and they told me that I had an old store credit card that was inactive so they "upgraded" me to the MasterCard!

Citi claims they have a right to do this because they were the financial institution for the original card!
