The 800-528-4800 is American Express 24-Hour Customer Service number. It is on the back of the card.

I found a message on my voice mail, a robocaller, sounding concerned about my AMEX card number ending in and then a string of about eight number.  Interesting thing  is, I don't have an AMEX card and on my credit card, only the last four numbers are ever used.   So whether or not it is a legit number, perhaps someone has hacked into it and is using it for criminal activities.  It has been blocked and I will run a credit check, just to make sure.

I forgot my user ID to log on to my account with American Express account.  This number called to give me a code.  I did request the call.  It was an automated system.

They called me today, did not leave a message  and after checking this list I call them. They sound exactly like AmEx (same message system), but I refused to give my account number so that  they could tell me why they called. Finally the guy told me to call the number on the back of my card, which I did.  The woman I talked to was very helpful. She said she could not find the phone number but said that it is a big company. It could be from the fraud dept or a marketing number.   She said to NEVER give out any information unless you are calling the number on the back of the card. As I had not activity on my card she was skeptical that it was the fraud dept calling. It could be an AMEX marketing number. But she repeated to always be careful unless it is the number on the card. They can transfer you to the fraud dept if you are concerned.  She was very nice and I appreciated her advice. So the others are correct- even if AMEX don't give them any info until you call the no on the back.

This is legitimately American Express.  For me they are calling the wrong number and they said that it was unethical for them to remove the number from an account that didn't belong to me.

This is a fraudulent caller/phishing scheme. The caller ID shows up as Am Expr Cust Sv, but they will try to get your mother's maiden name or other password out of you.

Hey, if it is a scam then how do they get the last four of my card and connect it with my contact number. If they can do that then they don't need me to begin with...so...it is not a scam. Silly.

Well here it is the 24th of October and there was a voice mail on my system for Zachery Custa (sp??) again.
Think that by now the guy should have gotten his statement or something.  This is obviously a scam that calls a random number which happens to be my direct line.  Sometimes they get in to our call center line as well.  *sigh*  Delete -and yes, they say to call 800-824-9289.  *ARGH*

You got it right !!!!!!! See my post...
Well, here it is,,,,,,,,,,
Ignore all the BS above and dial the number CORRECTLY yourself.  I did, and found out my AMEX card had been used in a state I had never been to.  AMEX noticed suspicious activity AND NOTIFIED ME, first by this number and then by letter.

First guy answered assumedly from India, could hardly understand, but when he asked for my FULL SSAN, I said no.... Here's the last four.  He said he couldn't work with just that.  So tough, I hung up.  Called them back on same number,. Got a delightful Indian girl who spoke better English than most of my friends!!!   And she NEVER asked for any part of my SSAN....  Think I'll call AMEX back and report the guy.   Anyway, there were several $3 and $4 charges.  That's the way thieves do it... They charge a few bucks to test the  ard, then  whammo, next week it's $900 for plane tickets, etc.  Many are working on illegal cell phones (two in NY I've located) where they can spoof the number.

Caller: American Express, sometimes...<<<<<<<<<<<<<

This number is AMEX's customer service fraud line.  They call periodically to check to make sure that the charges coming through are valid.  I appreciate whatever algorithm they use.

Hmm. There was a voice mail when I came in to work this morning for Zachery Custa(?) about activity on his card. No one here by that name AND this is a Help Desk Call Center for Computer equipment. Really??????? The automated caller gave the last 4 numbers of the card as well.  YIKES I am NEVER getting an American Express ANYTHING.

Supposedly was American Express.  The called wanted to speak to "S" Shumate which was my husband.  I spoke to an operator;  told the operator that my husband subscribed;  I do not have a card;  my husband does not have time to speak to anyone from American Express over the phone;  we do not like receiving personal calls over the phone; and that my husband only has time to read everything in writing.  He asked me for my name which is carol and then called me Karen.  I corrected him.  He then asked me to try to  cooperate.  I then said I am trying to cooperate you damn fool.  Go to Hell.  Then I hung up the phone.  The man's accent did not sound completely American.  To me he was hard to understand.  I shouted at the the whole time.  I was annoyed by the stupid phone call in the first place.  it interrupted my morning routine!  I plant to report this as a Do Not call list violation.  My husband may have an AMEX card, but we have explicitly requested not to be called at home!

This number calls me several times a day and every day.  They have always left a message about a fraud alert and it's for a Bonnie Mense or Mence. I don't know how they spell it because it's NOT my name and it isn't my card # they are giving either.  It's automated so I can't cuss the life out of them and tell them to stop calling.  They also leave a number and tell me to call back which I do not intend to do.  This has to be a fraudulent call.  The number on the back of my card is NOT the same number they are giving.  I think it's a phishing call.  I am also listed on the Do not call site and have been for years.  This has GOT to stop.  I'm sick to death of this. Please do something someone!

That's not true. It IS Amex. I called this number today to get information on my account. I found the number on the REAL Amex website.

That said, I would not give information to someone who called from an unknown number. I'd certainly be grateful for a call FROM them, tho, if there was fraudulent activity on my account.

Have gotten 2 messages from this number today. All the message says is "thank you for choosing American Express" and then hangs up. I do not have an American Express account. Never have. I thought it was odd so I looked the number up on their site and it is listed as Customer Service, so I called the number and talked to a guy who said they would never leave messages like that and that it was likely a phishing scheme of some sort and they were somehow using that number for their ID. Scary.

I got a call from this number and they left a voice message about checking fraudulent activity on my account. I called the number on the back of my Amex card the call was legit, there had been fraudulent activity on my card and they were able to cancel the bad charges and send me a new card.  However, I would not have given any information to someone who called me. I would always call the number I know to be correct.  I would advise any Amex customer getting a call from this number to check for fraud on their account.
