I spent a week at a conference and called my wife from the hotel pay phone every day, just a local call.  The pay phone advertised Local Calls for: "75 cents; deposit coins or insert credit card."  On two occasions I didn't have the change, so I inserted my credit card.  The charges were $6.13 and $5.03!  It wasn't a huge amount, but I felt ripped off, conned by false advertising on the phone.  My credit card company couldn't help.  Next to the billing item was this 800 #.  I called it and had a heated discussion with "Scott" who told me I should've called the operator first to find out what the charge would be.  Of course, the guidance to call the operator isn't listed on the pay phone either.  Scott even told me I was lucky they didn't include a connecting fee.  He said, "Most customers are charged 8-9 dollars."  I asked to speak to management, and Scott tried to give me a mailing address.  He said, "Managers aren't available to speak on the phone.  They're in San Diego; we're in Los Angeles."  I then asked if he had the highest authority at the center I was calling.  He said, "No."  I demanded to speak to someone with more authority, and that brought me to Emily.  Emily credited my card with $4.00; that was the most she could do.  Getting four bucks back was good, but this company's practice must be illegal.

I had a similar experience; this time, the guy's name was Michael.  I found an $18.16 charge on my credit card statement that I didn't recognize.  I called the 800 number and Michael said based on the number I was calling to reach him (the 800 number), it was from a payphone, probably from an airport.  His company's name was "International Satellite Communications".  I have a cell phone that calls anywhere, so I don't use such methods.  He asked for the full credit card so he could explain it to me.  Since I don't know the company, I refused but offered to give him the last four digits.  He said he wanted the whole number.  I told him I'd be disputing the charge.  Michael couldn't have been more than 18; very young sounding.  It's a scam if I ever heard one.  I think the CC dispute will keep my money out of their pockets.

I made a call from the Detroit Metro Airport. The bill showed up as $7.19. I called this number to verify. The guy's name was Rodney. The call starrted out as stressful because their end of the line is very noisy so I was asking for them to repeat, then shouting my replies from the start. I was told the company name was Telecom. I talked to Rodney. He said that signs on the phone about price do not apply to credit cards and I should have called an operator. I tried to tell him the signs didn't say otherwise, but his insistence only put anger behind my shouting. I finally demanded to talk to his supervisor and it took more shouting to get him to agree. I eventually talked to Emily. She gave me the same line -- because there was no sign saying the Visa price was the same as coins than I should naturally assume the price should be different. I disagreed, of course. She finally said that though she couldn't refund the whole price she could credit my card for $2.40. I took what victory I could get. I heartily agree with the previous poster. Credit cards and pay phone do not mix.

I was charged $19.98 twice for using the pay phone at the santa ana airpoirt and I used my visa card because I thought it would only cost me 50 cents! I couldn't believe it when I was seriously charged wayyyy more than what was claimed on the pay fone! DO NOT USE PAY PHONE UNLESS U HAVE EXACT CHANGE! TOTAL RIP OFF!!

Totally unreal!
I used the pay phone at a hospital to call my husband's cell in another part of the hospital -- no where on the phone or in the prompts did it indicate that using a credit/debit card would incur a higher charge than the local call of 50 cents.
Didn't have enough change and thought this would be charged as 50 cents.
Called the 800 number listed and they said they are an International Satellite company and the charges are for international calls, which this wasn't so he credited me $2.45 ------ RIDICULOUS!
They have quite a racket going on - there should be a sign indicating that if using crdit/debit card, the call is charged differently....
A 2 minute call cost me $3.68!
My advice - dont' use a pay phone unless you have the cash!

I used a public phone in Lahaina to call Victoria, BC. Used a 888 number to bill the call to Visa. Victoria answered and the call was disconnected.
Did this a second time and it was disconnected.
Each call was billed at $22.00 to Visa. I was told this is the minimum they charged. They will investigate and said, if each call was less than 10 seconds, there might be a refund. Visa can not help.
Will see what happens
