800-824-9289

Because this call sounded so suspicious, I called the number on the back of my Am Ex card and spoke to a Representative who verified that this is not a legitimate Am Ex number. These people who are making claims on this site that it is are all in on the scam.

I'm a child (14 years old) and this number called my phone that I've had for less than a year... Before this i didn't even know what American Express was, so I doubt I have an account...
Barkdust 2014-05-24 00:40:48 Unknown
800-824-89289 is a legitimate American Express fraud number. They just called me with a questionable transaction which was also shown on their website. Those of you who think that it is a fraud are simply wrong.
There should be a category "legitimate" in the call type. The only thing I can check is "unkown."

Interesting as I do not, nor have I ever had an AMEX account. Furthermore, if this was legit, why would caller refrain from leaving a message? Sounds fraudulent to me!
Polly 2014-05-12 04:39:58 Unknown
I received a call from this number. What's interesting is that they called my home phone number that I do not ever use. Frankly, I do not even know the number. I went on-line to check the phone log and noticed that a message was left. I do not have an Amex card and never have. Probably fraudulent or a debt collector... Careful about all of these posts claiming legit. Probably posts from employees at agency... As has been said, only call the number on the back of your card.

This number left a VM telling me to call back the number or the number at the back of my American Express card to verify recent account activity. I called the number on my card and American Express was able to verify that this number, 800-824-9289 IS a valid number from their security department.

I've gotten 3 calls from this number in less than an hour. I guess it's from American Express account security. Great to know they take care of their customers. The only problem is I've never had an American Express card!

This is a Amex number ,I called to the number on the back of the card ,and Amex rep. verified it .
Whenever you have any suspicious, the best way to check it directly with the company,
Liz 2014-04-24 14:05:25 Unknown
That is a valid amex phone number. We are a merchant and speak to AmEx on a daily basis.
Liz 2014-04-24 14:02:22 Unknown
That phone number 800-824-9289 is for AmEX - I am a merchant that deals with Amex daily, and this is a number for AmEx to validate that a customer did place and authorize a charge. They are legit and professional. You will see if you call that number.

It IS American Express. I simply called the AMEX number on my card to verify the message on my voice mail and yes, some a***ole tried to buy goods in England for $1000 on my card.
Brian 2014-03-18 15:44:33 Unknown
This number is LEGIT from Amex fraud prevention team. Someone tried to charge my card for something in Japan.
Rick 2014-03-15 15:27:48 Unknown
STRONGLY RECOMMEND you follow up with AMX if you receive this VM. It is NOT spam. I received a VM regarding possible fraudulent use of my AMX card. I called the number on the reverse of the card. A substantial charge had been made 4 hours previous I didn't make. AMX was very professional about it. The card is cancelled and a new card is being sent.

This is a number from American Express Card. I called back and found out that three transactions on my card in last 24 hours: $678 from VONs, $750 from Albertson and $90 from Mobil gas station. Sure enough, none of them were mine. I think AMEX fraud department did a great job blocking all these transactions.

I got a call from this number telling me American Express wanted me to confirm with me unusual activity on my account. I call but they said it was already verified??? so I logged on to the American Express website and noticed a $3,000 plus charge on my account!!! so I called the number on my American Express Card to report that I have no knowledge of this activity but I have to wait because it is listed as a pending charge.

Same caller left a mssg at my office phone - referring to an AMEX acct ending in xxxxxxx - not my acct.
When I called AMEX they said it was a probable fraudster.
Stacy 2014-02-24 20:12:36 Unknown
This is AmEx Fraud Prevention Service--they notify you if there is a strange charge.

American Express
Call type: Fraud prevention (no accurate selections listed in pull down menu)
I attempted an online purchase from a Canadian company that failed to process on my AmEx card. No more than 1 or 2 minutes later my phone started ringing. A robo dialer left a message on my voicemail identifying itself as being from AmEx and asked me to return the call. I called the number on the back of my card and they confirmed that the call was from the fraud prevention department. After clearing everything up I was able to successfully make the purchase that triggered the call.

The phone number they left on our voice mail was legit, but to be safe I didn't call that, I called the one listed on the back of my Amex card. Didn't give out my full cc number when the automated thing answered but did talk to a representative. And YES there was a fraudulent charge placed on my husband's card about 20 minutes prior for $$$ at a gas/convenience store in a different state (VA) than which we live in. Amex had already blocked it, but was calling to inquire about it. They are now sending out a new card for my husband. Interesting note here: My husband only uses his card *in person*, not online.

After receiving an automated message from 1-800-824-9289, my spouse called AMEX. This IS their legitimate "fraud alert" number.
Eva 2014-02-05 20:23:01 Unknown
I talked to this number, they cancelled my card.
syn ack 2014-02-04 16:57:37 Unknown
I got a fraudulent call where this number was obviously spoofed. An automated system was telling me about a security problem with my amex card. I hung up and called the number on the back of the card and there was no problem. Be careful. (I actually already knew that there was no problem, because I signed up for fraud alerts via e-mail and text already and did not get any notices).

stuoid? biard? Can you say scam?
Dennis t 2014-01-31 02:59:16 Unknown
There are a lot of stuoid people putting info in this biard. THIS IS a valid number from AMEX fraud service. I used my card in an unusual way and i received three calls from this number wanting to verify that i made the purchases. I have no idea why some people are making statements about this being a scam. I am delighted they called me.
Nice try 2014-01-24 15:20:05 Unknown
This is a scam. Any doubts about your account - deal only with American Express at the Customer Support number on your card. No need to dial the "fraud" unit.
dlee 2014-01-05 20:39:46 Unknown
From amex fraud dept, will display charge by text msg with a link to your amex account to confirm you charges.

This is a real number. I have gotten a lot of fake ones, but this was the first one to specifically say American Express. I hung up and checked the website, and sure enough, somebody almost stole my card number.
Consumer 2013-12-06 18:03:00 Unknown
This number 800-824-9289 is legitimate. I received a msg. from AMEX telling me to call this number because I was possibly the victim of fraud charge. I opted to call the number on the back of my AMEX card instead and they verified the number is theirs. Received my new card in the mail, the charge was canceled. If worried just contact the card company with the number on the reverse side of the card, they can help and verify. AMEX was very helpful.
Todd 2013-12-05 20:41:46 Unknown
800-824-9289 is Amex fraud. They left message on cell and work. They also said I could call number on back of card, but I called this one. I got email notification as well with the same phone number. And I believe I got an alert when I logged in to account online. Nefarious attempted charges. Amex taking care of it. Later found someone hacked into my Bestbuy account to try and make those purchases and they changed the default shipping to their address.
