Company: FIS
Department: Risk Management

Monitor for thousands of banks and credit unions nationwide to detect possible debit card fraud.

Thousands of different alerts can trigger a phone call. Out-of-State use, multiple uses through the same vendor in succession, certain vendors that have been marked with a high volume of fraud (with no prior activity with them). "Tests" from companies. (Paypal will run purchases of <$2 to make sure your card works.) If their are multiple 'test' attempts through any company this will most likely cause an alert because 'someone else' may be testing your card to see if they can use it fraudulently. And many more.

In many occasions, 'fraudsters' will print their own card with your number. Usually after obtaining it illegally, by hacking into vendors sites or card readers (most common at gas stations and ATMs).

When Risk Management finds an alert that may be fraudulent and should be  noted as such, the card is temporarily blocked and within 2 minutes of the block a call is sent to the primary number the financial institution has associated with the debit card. (Debit cards run on a different system as your main savings and checking, so be sure that the banks update EVERY system when you have any information updates.)

While monitoring for thousands of banks and CU's nationwide, alerts can get backed up. Or the "score" (the type of possible fraud) is low enough it gets pushed back. Notes, Card Blocks, and calls may not occur until a day or two after the charge was attempted. However, once the card is temporarily blocked, that is when a call is sent out. (Example: if a transaction is attempted Yesterday at noon, and you receive a call today at 2pm. Your card will have been able to be used up until you received the phone call)

There is only one bank that is monitored by Risk Management that requires an address verification. The only other information that is needed is the phone number that Risk Management dialed you at. In most cases, once you call back, your name, your financial institution, and last 4 of your card number should be read out to you. The transaction(s) in question will then be read out to you.

**NOTE: Only debit card information can be seen by Risk Management (FIS). If you are a joint owner on the account, that information cannot be seen or verified. Only the name listed on the card in question can be spoken with to verify recent debit card transactions.

If you have attempted, or completed, the aforementioned transactions, the card will be reactivated after the phone call has ended.

If you have NOT attempted any of the transactions, they are fraudulent. The card will then be shut down immediately. Your financial institution will have to reissue a new card. If any transactions have cleared the account (Which you will have to verify with your financial institution, you must file a dispute with your branch to retrieve any lost funds.)

Recap: This is a legitimate company who temporarily blocks debit cards, and then immediately calls you to verify possible fraudulent activity. If legitimate, card is then reactivated. If Fraud, the card is then shut down.  Any further inquires about your account, other cards, and balances must be directed to your financial institution.

Follow-Up:

Since thousands of financial institutions are monitored for debit card activity, the voicemail left must be bland. (The automated prompt cannot be tailored to each individual.

**Always be weary of who is calling. if you are ever unsure of who you are, or should be speaking to, hang up and call the number on the back of your debit card or to your local branch. (Keep in mind, if the call is legitimate from Risk Management (FIS) your card will not work until you have called and verified the activity.

I understand many callers can get frustrated when your card doesn't work. Try to stay calm when you are on the phone with anyone, as they are all just doing their job. If anger and hostility arise, you are making it difficult on yourself to be helped and speed the process along. If you hang up mid conversation, it is unlikely your card will have any changed from is Restricted status, unless there is 100% certainty that you have verified the transactions as legitimate or fraudulent.

**HELPFUL REMINDER: If you are travelling out of the state/country, notify your financial institution and they can remove some of the fraud restrictions on your card. This will allow you to make more purchases while you are travelling so you do not get call. (you MAY still get a call depending on the activity regardless of notes)...If you travel often. Let your financial institutions know this. They can permanently remove travelling restrictions to limit how many calls you May receive for possible fraud.  Truck Drivers face this the most. They purchase Diesel Gas (which authorizes for $500 regardless of your actual purchase amount to make sure the  card will work up that amount if necessary.) Out of State Gas stations will almost always get blocked unless the debit card is noted otherwise.

thought for sure this was a scam. I sent of an email to my bank letting them know someone had called saying there was questionable transaction on my card. I also said the last transaction should be for x amount. she called me and said if the last transaction I made was for x amount she would reactivate my card. told her to reactivate it . so people it is a legit deal, not a scam, but, I still like to deal with my bank.

I just received a recorded call to contact this number. They do ask for your telephone number, confirm your name, and then tell you which card it's showing on and list the charges. They caught two fraudulent charges that came in today and then transferred me to the bank to have it cancelled/reissued. Glad the system worked this time - now I need to check my other accts.

This hasn't been updated in forever it seems, but this number is legit. They verify your name and phone number and that's it. They said there were two charges that were out of state.. that I clearly didnt make. So they had my account on hold and told me to contact my bank.

I contacted my bank and sure enough, charges were there. Thanks for the heads up risk management. I'm frustrated now because this is a headache of a process to go through to fix everything.. but Im glad I was informed.

I just called this number back, and they answered with "Is this (my name)"? Then asked about an unusual transaction on my card. When I verified it, they said they would remove the alert on my card. Never asked for any information.

Did you recently try to use your card to purchase tickets in Europe? Yes. So is this a legitimate transaction? banks cannot monitor all of those transactions for all of their customers in real time. so yes, they do hire a third party to monitor debit card activity. no other information is gathered because it would already be on file. they ask for a phone number that THEY called and all your information is  their to verify your debit card

Legit. They just stopped 12 charges totaling $729.46 on my BMOHarris Mastercard Debit. They only asked for my phone number (the one they called me on). They listed all my charges over the past two days. Some were mine, most were not.

money used to be baCKED BY A tangeable objuct such as gold.. now its backed by uhhhh   debt? no its backed by nothing at all.  The only reson that these companies are rude and vile is because weve given everything to them.. they dont have to even have the money that they are lending and charging crazy intrest on...   well everyone knows bankers are similar to demons but what is the solution?? how do we take the power back and still be able to pay our bills... its simple .. the only reason their money exists is because we believe it exists.. stop adhereing to their system..  if they giver you a credit card use it and use it until they shut it off. then get another do the same..  never pay the bill unless its from an account that u just made up the #s.. screwe up ur precious credit score.. give no merit to their credit score system take their money and never pay them,,  destory the house of the vile. and give the freedom back to whom it belongs to.. blue collar working class not the 1 percent that has all the imaginary cash flow.. we have to break and not believe in their ideals entirely.  stop living complacent

Is this really legit? It looks like somebody may be spoofing the number. I got a recording congratulating me for winning $100 off my next ATT bill (I don't use ATT) so I just hung up. I then read this board and figured that it might be somebody spoofing the number so I called back and this time I got a recording asking if I wanted a free $100 walmart gift card. I hung up at that point. The number looks the same (1-800-830-2002). hmmm...that's just bizarre.

This is legit. They called and left me a message. I called them back and only gave them the phone number they called. Pulled up a record that had my full name and my bank's name. Rep asked me to verify that I attempted a transaction that I made ten minutes earlier. I verified. Rep said it was blocked by my bank, but didn't know why. Said I should call the bank to have the block removed if I wanted to try again.

I just received a call from this number.  I typed it in as they were saying it so that i could look it up and found this site.  so i decided to give them a call.  however, i did check my account before i called and saw that i had an unauthorized transaction.  when i called they did only ask for the number that they called me on it.  then they verified my name, told me i had a transaction that they were checking.  it was in woodhaven, mi. im in detroit mi.  they also verified a couple of transactions that i had made the day before.  so i would say that they were very helpful.  they gave me the heads up, i was able to cancel my atm card and also able to cancel a pending transaction so that i wouldnt incur overdraft fees.  im happy.

I called the number, they verified who I was, told me that my account had been frozen because of suspected fraudulent charges. When I called the issuing bank, their Customer Service was not aware that a 3rd party company was monitoring accounts, but they verified that the account had been frozen. There were also 19 pending charges that were not mine.  The bank said that about 12 more transactions attempted to post after the account was frozen.
Is going to be a pain in the rear since some did make it to pending status... I will have to dispute those. I am happy, however, that whoever these people are, they noted fraud and froze the account before it was drained.

It's 100% legitimate--they wanted to verify two purchases I made--one in an adjoining state and one on-line.  They did not want any info from me.  They had the exact amounts and didn't ask me for anything except verifying my name so they knew who they were talking to.  Definitely RETURN THE CALL ASAP.

This is legitimate; the number belongs to a fraud detection company to which Capital One 360 has outsourced detecting fraud.

My Capital One 360 debit card number was (somehow) compromised. The company detected fraudulent activity, shut down my card and called me to confirm.

They were nice, and like all the others only asked for the number at which they called me. After I confirmed it was a fraudulent charge, they passed me of to Capital One 360 from whom I ordered a new card.

Very relieved after-all.  When I returned the voice message phone number, the man only identified himself as Scott-I asked why were they calling me-all I heard was typing noise in the background and then he hung up-I immediately called my bank, the same time I checked my online balance-seemed fine.  My bank's CSR only asked if I see any unusual purchases because what I see online is what they see and it should be okay.  I still was not comfortable and called the telephone company security department-they referred me to call my cellular service provider-(originated call).

Instead, I called back the same 800 number and blocked mine-the woman answered by clearly identifying the company and asked for my number-instead I asked her why were they calling me-she said to immediately call my bank, because they (this 800 #) blocked my card-last night, I was downloading a bunch of itunes and suddenly my card was declined (knowing I have the money)-I immediately checked my online banking it was ok....but then this morning the 800 # call came....I called back my bank-I got the same response-this time I asked "Is there a hold on my ATM card?" She was surprised-and immediately forwarded me to the credit card department-they asked security questions and explained due to frequent Fraud on specific companies such as Google PlayStore, etc..most banks will have a third party who watches unusual purchase buying (I was downloading holiday songs:) and will freeze the card until card user verifies the purchases with the bank.....Relieved.

I was thankful and advised the second CSR at my bank to please send out a memo to all CSR's that should be #1 check if card is on hold....imagine if I left the house and went shopping OMGoosh what a declining mess that would be....My card was immediately released....Happy Holidays!

I'm not sure what the deal is....but, me and my wife watch out bank account very closely. Nothing out of the ordinary on our cards.

Just to echo/verify others:  this is legit.  Got a call this AM; since it was from an unidentified 800 number, we let the machine answer & it was an automated voice asking us to return the call about our debit or credit card.  I was suspicious & came her to see the pages & pages of folks reporting that it's legit, so I called back.  Two bogus charges for Air Berlin & two bogus charges for STRAWBERRYNET.COM were pending.

I was very apprehensive since the voice mail was so vague and did not specifically mention my financial institution. They called at 7AM on a Sunday so I was already pretty peeved. I am glad I googled the number. I gave them the phone number they called, they gave me all the rest of the information and asked if the Amazon purchases were ones I actually made since it was out of the ordinary for me to shop online. I think it is nice to have someone monitoring for me.

Legit! I bought two money orders totaling $1500 at the post office today. Later today I tried to buy something online and they denied the transaction because they hadn't heard from me after calling me. They froze my account until they spoke with me to verify everything was ok. They did not ask for anything except my phone number. It feels good to know someone cares!

You will want to call the number back and check with your bank about any unauthorized transactions. I too had a capital one 360 account previous ING which unauthorized use was trying to occur.
