I was just called by this number.

Its a scam. Do NOT give out any personal information whatsoever.

The CRA will always leave a detailed message with the name and number of an account manager that you can call back at the official CRA phone number, and they will already know all of your information and they will not ask you for any information over the phone, ever!

If this number calls you report it to your local Police department!

This is CRA - legit number. They called me to file tax returns. It happened every year because I always late to file my corporate tax returns. Not a scam or hoax.

They just called me.  I didn't answer and they DID NOT leave a message.

As an accountant I have dealt with the CRA many times and they ALWAYS leave a message (whether its for Corporate Tax, HST, personal tax, payrol tax, etc.)

I agree with other posts that this is likely a scam.  NEVER EVER give your SIN over the phone.  If you believe it to be the CRA and want to give your SIN then ask for a reference number and call back on the number provided on their website.

Total scam. This number has called me multiple times now on my cell, but I don't give out my cell number and don't put my cell number on anything with the government. So total load of BS. Can't wait for them to call back again and see what they say .

This isn't fake. They called and didn't leave a VM. I called back and was only asked to provide a business #, no personal info. It's the CRA collections line.

NOT A SCAM. I got many voicemails from this number. I called 1-800-959-5525, which is my contact for GST filings (check http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/cntct/phn-eng.html), and enquired about both 800-931-1026 and the call back number, 1-866-538-6181. The agent took a while checking, but said yes, they were in fact from a collections department. The issue is that the CRA is a big agency, and not all departments talk to each other, so every agent you talk to may not even be aware of the numbers. Again, this is not a scam. If you got the call, it's probably because you're late on a payment.

My husband got a call from this number yesterday asking for me(??? really weird). As the "Heartbleed" bug hit CRA recently, he naturally thought that it may be related and called back this number but couldn't get through.
Good thing is I've read a news article stating that CRA would never email nor call to notify.
[The agency says it will not be calling or emailing individuals to inform them that they have been impacted as they want to ensure that  ?communications are secure and cannot be exploited by fraudsters through phishing schemes.? ]

They phoned to tell me that I owe income tax from the 2012,which do not owe any thing to the government .
They did not say their name or ask for social insurance number, which I would have not given them anyway.
When I see my accountant,I am going to mention this to her and give her the number.

Got 2 calls today, 2 yesterday.  True to form, no message was left.
I highly recommend not answering it.
When CRA has phoned for business reasons in the past, they have ALWAYS left a message.
Phone calls have always been in our favour.
Repeated mailings are sent if $ is owed.

Just got a call from this number.  I don't answer unknown numbers and there was no message left. Everyone here says it comes up as a CRA number but my phone shows it as a USA number. Sad when a person has to screen calls.

My proven way to stop these calls......

Answer, speak immediately so the computer will transfer to a live person. Then have fun with it, tell them you are so interested, but keep saying you are doing things, like answering doorbell, getting pen and paper, getting credit card.

The more you can waste that live person's time (and wages) will get you off call lists faster than any "do not call" list. I do this, and they never call again, and I have rarely been getting new calls.

Hit them where it hurts, the wallet.

If a nice percentage of people did this, all telemarketing would probably stop...

And please feel free to pass all of this along whenever you post comments on other numbers...

BTW: the best I've been able to do is keep them on the line for 11 minutes, but with only coming back to the phone for 15 seconds at a time, three times. So my 45 seconds cost them 11 minutes of wages.

Criminals have lots of rights. Foreign criminals have even more. We should revamp entire immigration regs. One strike and back you go. Even an arrest should result in deportation. Period. Im SICK of hearing about gang violence and murder from folks with clearly asian or middle eastern names. Just fact, not opinion.

they assured me it is fraudulent and to not give out any info to them.

This is a SCAM. Have been calling our house asking for my husband. At first I thought it was legit - displayed as 'GOC/GDC', caller seemed professional. Something told me to do a quick google search, just in case... which lead me to this thread and others. At first we ignored the calls, but they kept calling persistently. My husband called the general CRA number listed on the official CRA website and they confirmed that this number was being investigated by the RCMP.

But they kept calling, insisting that it was re: a personal tax matter. I got fed up and tore a strip off of one of the callers, telling her that we knew it was a scam, that we verified with the CRA. She argued and argued, telling me that it was not a scam, that I could verify with 1800OCanada, etc. So I asked her, why does this number not appear on the official CRA page? Why does the CRA not have this number in their system? She started stammering, and said that the CRA wouldn't have the number because she's calling from a call centre in Ottawa. Then I said, "but I thought YOU were the CRA. Why are you saying that you're calling from the CRA if you're not? Why haven't we received anything in writing?" She then told me that "her time for this call is up" and that she had to go and she HUNG UP ON ME.

I thought that was the end of it, but more calls came. My husband finally made two calls - one the actual CRA, as listed on the official website, the other to the SCAM call back number.

Sure enough, the call to the CRA confirmed that there was no issue with my husband's file. Also confirmed again that this is indeed a scam, that the CRA would send a letter to the taxpayer if there was an issue, and that there was nothing that we could do other than ignore the calls and not give any information out.

When he called the SCAM call back number, he was asked to punch in his SIN (as if). He punched in a fake number to get a 'representative'. Someone answered, and he asked for their name and agent ID number. After a pause, he was given a name and a 4-digit number. He then asked to have the conversation in French - after all, it's the Canadian government, and they *have* to provide bilingual service. The representative then said no, she couldn't transfer him to a French-speaking agent. She then kept insisting on getting his SIN number again, saying that there was something wrong with this account. Hubby then said, "I hope you enjoy this while you can, especially with the RCMP investigating. I called the CRA directly and there is nothing wrong with my account." This representative then had the nerve to say that the CRA wouldn't know if he owed them money, that it was too big of an organization. WT actual F? The CRA (that she claims to be calling from) wouldn't know if he owed them money??

Other clues that this is a scam:

**The phone number that they were calling us on is not the number that we have filed with our taxes. The number is new and not many people have it.
**Never received anything in the mail. We've owed in the past, and we always received it in writing. From what I remember, if you delay contacting them, they will send subsequent reminders by registered mail. We never received a phone call.

Anyhow, sorry for the long version, but I wanted to recount our experience so that no one falls victim to this. Anyone on this thread who claims this is legit is a liar, or has fallen victim. Any bilingual readers, please feel free to do as we did and ask for a bilingual rep... would love to know what your experience is. And to anyone reading who is associated with this scam - karma will get you.

In the last couple ofvweeks, I keep getting calls from 1-800-931-1026; no messages left on our machine, ever. I answered the call last evening and the woman said she was from Revenue Canada! Come on! The first thing is  it's no more Revenue Canada...but Canada Revenue Agency!
These are fraudsters!! Beware. Do not give out SIN, DATE OF BIRTH, BANK NAME, ACCOUNT NUMBER or any personal information.
I called our accountants who confirmed this.
CRA will never initiate call WITHOUT A PAPER TRAIL..be careful, these people can also send you letters which may look authentic.. But are fraudulent . Check the CRA website.. It carries info on such frauds.
Can I inform the RCMP or the police?
