Fair point.  However, I think a real law firm would have some kind of listing show up somewhere - I couldn't find one.  There is a Maitland Law firm in Chapel Hill, NC - but not Los Angeles, CA.  There are no attorneys by the name of "James Lomax" at this firm.

>>> Phonevalidator.com states "Sorry, we don't have 844-833-4213 in our database. Are you sure it's right?" 411.com and whitepages.com both state that this is unknown. <<<

These are not good indicators.  Phonevalidator.com does not have information about toll-free numbers at all.  And 411.com and whitepages.com won't have the information you want either, because they rely upon the toll-free number owner to register (or even advertise) their number at these sites, or for you to buy an expensive report (which might be from nothing more than public domain sources, anyway).

If you looked up my toll free business number, you would get the same result.  I give it only to actual clients, and these days, even clients who know it rarely use it.  It's just too inexpensive for my clients to dial a regular number to bother with toll-free numbers anymore.

I do have a toll-free line for myself that I *never* give out, and I use it solely to provide me with a line I can use to make cheap long distance calls if I am ever out-of-town and do not have my cell phone.  Among other security measures, the toll-free number associated with this line is also not listed anywhere.

I'm not necessarily disputing your conclusion, just the ability of your selected tools to provide useful information for numbers such as this.  Don't misunderstand --- I use these tools, myself.  But I know their limitations.

411.com and whitepages.com both state that this is unknown.  And if you read the previous comments, you'd see that, yes, it is a scam.  No one gets a heads up they'll be served a court summons - ever.   Scammers will threaten people with service of court summons, and intimidate them with supposed court cost and jargon - it's all a bunch of BS.  Per the FDCPA, you should not pay any caller who refuses to MAIL - do not accept email or fax - proof that you owe this debt and proof that they can legally collect said debt.  Refusal to mail this documentation is another violation of federal law.  No written, verifiable proof of debt = do not pay!

Follow the steps in what you need to know. A legitimate debt collector agency should not have a problem with giving you a real business name and address you can google and verify via google street view, BBB etc.

No one gets a heads up they'll be served - ever.  That's not the way the legal system works.  You only have two weeks to wait to go to court?  Wow, you must have really quick court service in your area.  Or, the other option - the one which we are all thinking - is that you're a shill for the scam - because scam is what this is!

Debt Collector
I called the number above 844-833-4213, which was left with a Human Resources employee and was told that I was going to be served with papersl.  He stated I owed $14,000. and if I am served with papers and go to court, I would owe $15,000.  Asked me if could pay $972.00 per month or what would be good for me to pay.  Stated that he was an attorney representing a Cash Call Company and they would settle for $5,000.  Told the gentleman I would check to see what I could do.  He said his name was James Lomax from Mainland Associates in Los Angles.  Told me to call back that evening.  I did not give out any information.  Is this company trying to pull a scam?

I received a similar call yesterday afternoon but the number referenced on my voicemail was not the same one listed above. I mention this here because the verbage was much the same. At first I dismissed the voicemail as just another phone call. This morning I was served with a court summons. I'm due to appear in two weeks. Sucks! I guess I should have called the number and found out what it was regarding....

Prank Call
Yesterday I received a voice mail from a woman who said her name was Judith Sharp. She said she was calling in reference to my ex-husband about a complaint filed against him, and if I didn't call back immediately they would "deem the address and phone number correct and proceed without you, including contacting your employer." I immediately began wondering if it was a scam because the woman didn't identify who she worked for or what kind of complaint she was referencing. I was also suspicious because I have not had any contact with my ex-husband for six years, and we have been divorced for over eight years. I searched for the phone number online and found that many people have received calls and messages similar to mine. By the way, the phone number is 844-833-4213.

This morning I called the number to see what sort of nonsense I would hear (sort of my entertainment for the morning). The woman who answered never said the company name when she answered - she said, "Corporate Office." She transferred me to a man who immediately began asking about my ex-husband. I asked him the name of his company, and he said it was Mainland & Associates. He asked for contact information for my ex; I told him that I don't have any and that I have nothing to do with my ex. He said that my ex identified me as a point of contact. I said that that wasn't true because we haven't had anything to do with each other for eight years. He then said I needed to contact my ex and tell him to contact them. I again informed him that I have nothing to do with my ex, I don't even know his phone number, and he said if I didn't talk to my ex then I would be served with his documents. When I asked what sort of documents he was talking about, he said that I would find out when I was served. I again tried to tell him that I don't know where my ex is or how to contact him, but he raised his voice and talked over me. He did this every time I tried to say something he didn't like. I told him where to go and hung up.

Do not give these people any personal information, and absolutely do not give them any money if they claim you owe a debt. If you ever get a call like this - where a caller does not identify their company name, field of business, or any specific information - assume it is a scam until you do some research.

p.s. For Call Type I chose Prank Call because I do not believe these people are legitimate debt collectors; I think they are con artists.

Got a call from a "unknown" number today around 1:30 and they actually left a message stating that I had to call them back IMMEDIATELY at 844 833 4213 or else I would be facing some major legal issues about a civil complaint filed against me.  Guy said his name was... GET THIS.... AGENT PRINCESS!  Now what kind of fool would think that someone would take that name and phone call seriously?
He stated a "case number" and was with "asset investigation?"   What a load of malarky.  This person called actually twice and was back to back only leaving a message the second time his "princess" self called.  He acted very stern and serious seeming as if the world were about to end if I did not call him back asap.
Makes me wonder how many people actually fall for this line of crap.  PEOPLE! IGNORE THESE CALLS!  THEY WILL TRY AND GET WHAT THEY CAN OUT OF YOU!

these guys are calling me day and night, at work, at home, my cell phone.... they have contacted HR department saying they have a warrant, etc.... I have a friend who fell for one of these.... They scared him into giving them his credit card number stating that if he paid them a one time fee of 300.00 they would drop charges.... He gave them the info and 2 days later they had pulled 1700.00 from his account! DO NOT TRUST THIS!! They ask him for mailing address, etc..... Remember: if they have a warrant the they ALREADY know your address!!! Just ask them to take you off of their call list and then hang up!
