Debt Collector
I will probably get blasted for my post, but oh well....

Here's the deal, Deca is a legitimate debt collection company licensed in all 50 states for multiple types of debt (medical, student loans, toll violations, etc)

When calling a responsible party, 50 times out of a 100 we are hung up on before we can even state the reason for the call.

Secondly, the Federal government PROHIBITS debt collectors from telling the nature of the call UNLESS the debt collection company has CONFIRMATION that we are speaking with the correct individual.  How is that done?  By first and last name and generally a "part of some other information" like last 4 of ss# or year of birth (we provide the month and year) and we have all this information on file already (remember the ER visit in which you gave the info in the first place?)

Not left a message for the reason of the call?  Simple, that's also against the law unless you provide your first and last name on the voice mail.  What if the numbers were transposed and it was your Aunt, neighbor, cousin, or worse your boss' number?  We would have just informed them of a debt that you owe or a potential debt (in the event not yours, we just need documentation letting us know.)  Don't like that?  Blame the FTC and FDCPA, we have to identify you in order to speak with you.

It's not unscrupulous, its the law.  9 times out of 10, we have ALREADY sent a letter to the responsible person using the most up to date information that we have on file that we received from the physicians, this is in addition to the 3-6 notices that the physician sent to the person and never called to set up a payment arrangement. When we call, we are trying to collect a valid, legal debt, but people lie to us constantly.

Just like many like to "lump" all the nasty debt collections companies "good and bad" into the same bucket; after a while, collectors do the same to the responsible parties.  We are promised a call back, are given permission to leave a voice mail, leave 1 per day for several days and nothing.  While I realize that some are not "dead beats", some are, if the collector sounds heavy handed, unfortunately, you have to realize that you aren't dealing with customer service, these are collectors.

If you are nice, so are the collectors, at the very least, hear them out for the reason for the call.  If you dispute the debt, fine, you may be asked to provide documentation.  We cannot contact your insurance company to do this for you, that's also a violation of federal law.

My favorite denial from someone is providing month and day of their birth and asking them to validate the year......"I'm not giving my personal info!".....this is after I have identified myself and indicated the reason for the call.  Honestly?  What can be done with your year of birth?  There are 330+ million Americans, you think you are the only one born on that date?  Geez.

Yes, we want to collect the money owed, but in the event you are unemployed or under employed, we do have VERY workable payment plan options to help you out and prevent further actions being taken.

I have seen people that go from a $300 to over $700 bill because they simply refuse a $50 a month payment plan and repeatedly hang up or dodge the collectors and are then sued.

The biggest tip, is to be honest about your situation, and STAY IN COMMUNICATION, pretending a bill isn't there, won't make it go away, yes, some of us are nicer than others, but even the nice folks get annoyed when we have spoken with you, you promised to call back, and after 3 weeks we are repeatedly hung up on and left messages that we were told to leave, and still not able to reach you.

Sorry this is so long, but its my best at explaining to a lot of the comments listed here.

Well like bob said if you ARE really a debt collector you'd send a letter of validation. If not, you are just another scumbag trying to extort money out of people. Turn off your capslock and learn how to talk to people with respect or else you'd be treated like trash. Go away trash. If you are into crime, the cops will come after YOU :-)

Oh my! The SHILLS are working way too hard lately. Tell ya' what. Take a break. Sit back, stretch, take a deep breath. Look around you. See all those co-workers? Yep, you're one of them! Congratulations! You've just discovered that you're nothing but an insignificant Turd slowly melting as you drift toward the drainfield. The really sad part of that is that when you're finally gone you won't even be fertilizer. You're just too foul of a little Turd; You'll never be anything but toxic waste.

Fairly sure they are collecting for student loans, even if they are paid off !!  Check you local laws as they apply to loans or debts. If it has been over six years in some states they are SOL.

Got a call to my business from them looking for an employement verification on someone who has never worked for my company.  They do not sound like a group of professional individuals.  When I returned the call, the guy I got said he had to run across the room and get her to stop screwing off talking before he could transfer the call.

I just got a phone call fron a "Ryan McKim" (yes, it sounds like an alias) from this number looking for my son, who hasn't lived at home for a couple years now. He was shady; ddn't want to tell me his name or for whom he worked. I said I wouldn't pass on the message unless he gave me his info, only then did he say DECA. He didn't sound like the brightest bulb! It seems like these people are trying to run a scam...

Got a call from this number asking for my ex - since he has never had this number I asked who she was and she said DECA - I asked what does that stand for she said no. 10.  I said no what does your business do she said it is important that they speak with him and I told her until I knew what the call was about I was not message service.  She refused to give me more information and hung up on me. I tried to call back to get my number removed and they hung up on me without saying a word.

Received a phone call did not answer. In the voicemail the man only said my first name like he was trying to trick me into thinking that he knew me personally (i.e. for a job interview or something), and he casually said call me back, not stating what company he is from or what he is calling for. Those are very sneaky tactics and I do not like that. its not to see other ppl reporting this.
