Debt Collector
Also received a call from this number.  The male said he was looking for my brother as my brother listed me as a contact person on some application for a loan they were trying to collect on.  The male said that "Plaintiff" was filing suit and they were trying to serve my brother at his home address but then could not tell me the correct address.  They gave me a 10 digit case number.  My brother called them back and asked to speak to the supervisor and the person said they would call back but did not.

Print off this thread and give it to your employer:

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Debt Collector
Husband received a call from a blocked number and this message was on his voice mail: Ms. McClain from Timberlake District Court (there is no Timberlake District Court- I looked)  was looking for a Marcella Burkholder (we know no such person) and that she gave my husband's name and number. They are currently searching for Marcella and need him to tell Marcella to have her or her atty to call this plaintiff's (plaintiff is someone filing a suit, why would a plaintiff have their own office?)  office back at this number: 855-283-2185. They even gave a scary sounding "docket" number. I blocked my number and called it. It is American Credit. After searching on the internet, I realize, this is a scam to trick you into calling. Then they will threaten you once they have you on the phone. Don't talk to them and don't give them any information.

You can KNOW it's a scam because people don't get a heads up that they'll be arrested - the cops just show up!  If they were real cops, they would already know how to "find a way" to speak to your son.  Any caller who refuses to tell you their company name and physical address can be considered a scammer - if they were legitimate, why wouldn't they share those details?  And yes, you can call your local police department - they'll tell you it's a scam, and a very prevalent one at that.

I called my local sheriff's office that this number claimed to represent directly using the none emergency number from the county website. I think that is safest way to confirm that this was a scam

Recieved a call from this number informing us our son was up for 2 counts of fraud and would be arrested. They would not share details...just wanted to know to find a walk to speak with him.  This is out of character for our son and I am wondering if this is a scam...they would not provide their company or any other information except their number. How would I find out if this is real.
