Debt Collector
Got a call From Angela Carol today who answers the phone as "law Offices" (no Name) claiming that charges are scheduled to be adjudicated in the county that I no longer live in.  She said I owe a bank for a student loan I promised to pay, from the scam of The College Network.  She said I violated the contract, and they have received no payment and that I will be charged with felony check fraud, and receiving stolen property (2 books).  She talked non stop for 45 minutes, I couldn't get a word in. She put me on hold to talk with a judicial somebody.  In the meantime I called college network, that particular bank and the 2 other collection agencies it was sold to, and they said this was not legit.  I was terrified, and I gave this lady information I regret. After reading this forum I feel a little better, but she said she was a mediator and was on my side so I believed her. STUPID ME!!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I got the call also and called back 3 times, first person told me there were in the District Court in District of Columbia, 2nd person told me they were District Court in Texas, 3rd person told me they were District court in KY. When I asked them which district court # were they calling from, that is when they turned nasty, refused to tell me and one person told me to "look up the defination of litigation". I told her I have a different word she needs to look up and she also needs to look up the RULES for FDCPA ((Fair Debt Collection Practices Act) and when I told them to please hold while I TRANSFER THEM TO MY LOCAL COURTHOUSE, where they could go ahead and file, they hung up. I just blocked the #.
They are bottom feeding scum who are using fear tactics (ILLEGAL) and misrepresentation (ILLEGAL) to try to get people to pay for what may or may not be their debt.
Bottom line.................report them to the BBB and Even the FTC had a bulletin on the Global scam so report them again to the FTC for every phone call they make to you, DO NOT ANSWER YOUR PHONE, MAKE THEM LEAVE A VOICE MESSAGE, then let the FTC know you have the recording saved.
Come on people, who calls and tells you they are "going to file papers if you do not reply" who are reputable?
REAL lawyers just get on with it and file. Never engage them in conversation............just block, make them leave a messsage and slam the FTC website with complaints.

Just got a call from this "Mr. Campbell".  He said that if I don't pay in full the $20,000 that I owe on my student loans that I will be arrested in 48 hours, and criminal charges will be filed against me.  I informed him that there would be no criminal charges filed because it was not a "crime" to default on a student loan.  I told him that I would deal directly with Sallie Mae and Texas Guaranteed and not a collection agency.  He said "I am with the prosecuting attorney's office in your county".  I asked him what county that was, and he quickly changed the subject.  I asked him if he was aware that it was illegal to falsely identify himself as a member of a government law enforcement agency if he was not, and that that actually was a CRIMINAL ACT!!!  I then informed him that I did not wish to communicate with anyone regarding this debt in any other form than written postal mail.  I then called my local district attorney's office and they have said that this is a scam and they are aware of the activity.

I too received a call from this number (855-833-9544) stating they were a law firm (goldstein, zosh and associates) who was representing me in a check fraud case against me. The woman ( barbara hamlin) identified herself as an attorny, and immediatly started asking me question about cars i had owned in the past and present. When i asked what this was about she started screaming at me and my husband (on speaker phone) stating that i needed to go to the local circut court to turn myself in. That they were going to take my nursing license and send me to jail. I said wait i thought you represented me. I asked her location so that we might talk face to face and she started yelling profanities and threating me. She finally stated she was 30 minutes away from me in a city that is across the state. I informed her that she should get her facts strait and look at a map before lying to me about where she was. I dont  know of any law  firm that would use an 855 number or call with a call block on their phones. I did look her name up on the bar and there was no such person. When i asked for her bar number she stated i didnt need to know that. I informed her it was public record and she was not listed on our states bar. Again profanities and that they were going to take me to jail.
After hanging up i contacted the circut court who said they have nothing and that is sounded like a scam. I have received nothing from them. I asked for a copy of proof that they could collect and i got a contract from the college network. I did indeed sign up for them, but cancelled. The address on the cover letter was the same as in the message from Jayne Deaux above where they were refered to as whitney ,warner and associates. I have since contacted the attorny general in my homestate.
These people are disgusting and use fear to get what they want. Debating whether to call them back and call them out on their taticts and threats.

We got the same BS line.  Now they go by the name Caraway L. Copeland Law Firm.
Same address as above.
Now her name is Casandra Hilton.  She sounds like a chain smoker, mid 40's or low 50's, w/f and will not stop talking.

Cambell hasn't changed his name yet.

My wife and I each received calls from Mr. Campbell and Ms. Keaton yesterday threatening my wife and my adult daughter with felony prosecution if my wife didn't agree to pay a settlement for my daughter's supposedly defaulted RN student loan. (My wife was not on the loan but had been paying the montly payment thru an automatic checking debit until my daughter dropped out of the program.)  They also threatened revocation action against my daughter's LPN license.  Glad to have found this posting site as we may have taken them more seriously, but doubted the validity of their claims as the IRS had collected this debt for the balance of the federal student loan several years ago from our daughter.  My concern now is how did they obtain the loan documents (with my daughter's SS#) and a copy of my wife's voided check used to set up the original monthly debit??

Yeah I received a call today and yesterday from this so-called Mr. Campbell 1-888-208-2545 stating that legal action was going to proceed against me, with or without my consent.  BULL ISH.  He threatened my nursing license, which he cannot do.  He claimed to be a representative from the Whitney Warner Associates law firm, based out of Georgia.  When I asked for a legit local phone number, he became upset.  I talked with the board of nursing in the state where I received my license and they stated that they were not aware of any type of legal action against me.  And they did not know anything about this Ethics Committee in Georgia.  This guy even had a nerve to call my mother's phone number,  which lets me know that because I usually list her as a contact on almost everything I do, he got a hold of something old, in my past, that?s all.  This whole ordeal pissed me off, but I am not a fool and you can't scare me. So 'F" you MR. CAMPBELL!

***Update 4/19/2012*** Just received another call from Mr. Campbell. This time he stated he was so e sorry for the mix up, but there was another case with a person with my same name in their office (highly unlikely because I do not have a common name by far). Now he is stating the same thing...prosecuting me for fraudulent check to College Network for a Project Management education at Boston University with the College Network. What??? Like I told him I never even been to Boston and never tried to go to school there for anything. So he states the same spill I've seen on here...he will email the educational paperwork and the fraudulent check copy immediately. I provided the email address. Just now received the email which states as follows:

Enclosed are all original contracts. Please contact the office as soon as you receive this email, we will receive electronic notification that this paperwork was successfully sent to the email which was provided.

Clearly, this is a creditor attempting to collect a debt that is real or fabricated. Even if they have to lie and portray that State of Georgia Board of Ethics commission...they will in attempt to collect what it is they are trying to obtain.

Just received a call from this number today!!! Mr. Campbell of the Georgia State Ethics Board is how he identified himself. Stated that I was going to be prosecuted by my local county court & receive a subpena to appear in court for arrest. He referenced that on my credit report  Oak Rock Financial (ask for number which is supposedly 888-347-2365) representing the "college network" is suing me. This was supposed to be for an educational loan to become a nurse. ***PLEASE NOTE: NEVER WANTED OR TRIED TO BECOME A NURSE IN MY LIFE***  Please be aware...I've called the Georgia State Ethics Board (Commission) who has a new name now and informed them of this scam. So if you are reading this Mr. Campbell....best of luck fighting your companies new legal battle of falsely stating you are with the State of Georgia Ethic's Board in  attempt to scam money out of people for debts they have never had.

Great advice posted by an attorney on:
http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-718-732-0174

"IF they do not provide you with the verification of the debt, the debt is invalid and not subject to collection.  PAY NOTHING TO ANYBODY UNLESS THEY PROVIDE YOU WITH WRITTEN VERIFICATION OF THE DEBT, AND ONLY THEN IF YOU FEEL THE DEBT IS VALID - otherwise, let them sue you for the debt, as a real law firm will only bring a legal action on a truly valid debt".

I had the same scam. I am a nurse that did have an old student loan that had gone I to collection. Beware. This is fraud. Then she said I was going to be prosecuted and arrested the next day when I called her out on it.  The return call was from a blocked number originally. They emailed me my original copy of the student loan application with someone elses check. That I had committed fraud by providing a false check and she was trying to back me into a corner to say that I owed and was going to be prosecuted for this crime. Whitney, Warner, and Associates Mediation Firm. Then advised that the prosecuting attorney was Heningworth and Henderson. The number she gave me to call her back on is 888-347-2365. I called the police. If someone is going to say I committed a crime that I did not commit then there are some major issue with our system of law.
