People that are associated with the scam are cruising lists like this trying to perpetuate the scam.

They're either directly involved, or have some interest in seeing the scam perpetuated. They are also regularly
changing their "From" name so it looks like more than just one person is trying to support the scam.

Multiple people have fact-checked this info with B of A, and there's no one at B of A taking responsibility for these
calls.

Feel free to ignore anyone that tries to legitimize calls from this number.

BOA Associate, I find it very disturbing that you would come online, representing Bank of America, and speaking to people as you do - it is no wonder that telemarketers and the like receiving such a 'warm' reception on the phone. I think its pretty hilarious that i have also received these calls from this very same number, and am NOT a citizen of the US, NOR do i have a BoA account.

If this really WAS Bank of America making these calls regarding someone's overdraft, then I am pretty sure the CSR's answering would KNOW the number that the caller is referring to........either that or your company policy is to keep all their employees in the dark....

I truly hope that you find a job that suits your pleasant disposition - I hear Jiffy John is hiring for clean-out techs, perhaps this is something you should look into

100 percent scam. I had a phone call from them last night. I was put on hold immediately placed on hold. When the "bank of america associate" got on the line the first question she asked me was for my address and social. When I asked her what this was in regards to, she said it was "a courtesy call about my checking account". Well I have multiple with BOA and when I asked her which one, she didn't know. I found this strange that she wanted my entire social, seeing as BOA has only asked me for the last four digits of my social. I told the "associate" I didn't feel comfortable giving this information over the phone and she quickly interrupted and said "please goto bankofamerica.com for further information" and hung up!

Well I called BOA right after this call. I have NO overdrawn accounts and BOA told me that their associates would NEVER call and ask for an entire SSN and home address for a "courtesy call".

Well I called 866-512-7171 .

Long story short I ended up having a heated conversation with their "associate". It's such a scam. I just wanted to call this number and let them know that BOA flagged them for fraudulence and that I know they are fake.

The "associate" still ended up asking me repeatedly for my information, throughout the duration of our conversation. I finally told him "LISTEN DUDE I AM NOT GIVING YOU MY INFORMATION, SO JUST FORGET IT. YOU ARE A JOKE"

He testily replied "thousands of other customers have given their information and been satisfied with their courtesy call. sorry that you are so paranoid"

Poor thousands of people! And if he WAS a real BOA assosiate- you think they would really call their customer "paranoid"?

I received a call, I was asked for my Address and DOB.  I refused, but the guy calling was curtious and told me that people refuse all the time, but he'd put a note on my account and suggested that I either go into a branch or call the number on the back of my card.  I ended up calling the number on my card and he was telling the truth, and old account had gone $6 over and there was a note placed on it 15 minutes earlier that someone from the OD department had called me on my cell.

I still will never give out information to someone who called me, but it doesn't mean that this number was a scam, just a poorly thought out implementation.

People need to ease up on the paranoia just a bit.

I got the same call.  Supposedly from BOA on an account I don't have (I've never had an account with them for it to be overdrawn), asking for someone who isn't me (the number has been mine for about 6 years.)  THIS IS A SCAM, NO MATTER WHAT OTHERS ON THIS THREAD ARE TRYING TO GET YOU TO BELIEVE.  A bank like BOA is not going to call you about an overdrawn account.  A bank like BOA is not going to accidentally call someone who isn't a customer over an account that doesn't exist.  A bank like BOA is not going to call and ask for that much personal information.  Those that are indicating this is a legit number are either in on the scam or enjoy screwing dumb people over.  No employee of BOA is going to search for, find, and post on a site like this.  No employee of a BOA customer service department is going to treat BOA's customers as has been noted in this thread.  DO NOT GIVE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION OUT OVER THE PHONE.  DO NOT GIVE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER OUT OVER THE PHONE.  DO NOT GIVE OUT CREDIT, DEBIT, OR ATM CARD NUMBERS OUT OVER THE PHONE.  DO NOT GIVE OUT PINs OVER THE PHONE.  In fact, unless it is a confirmed number of a company you trust and involves a phone call you initiated, beware doing any business over the phone.

I received a call from this number 866-512-7171 and since I have been having a ton of problems with fraud & identity theft I was hesistant to answer the call. I called the number back and heard the BOA music. After being on hold forever, I googled the number and saw this information about the number. Immediately concerned with whether or not I was being scammed or not, I called the regular BOA customer service number and had a customer service rep confirm for me if this was in fact one of their numbers. They informed that it is IN FACT their number & it made perfect sense as to why they were calling because I had an account that was closing due to fradulent charges but the account had become overdraen due to the NSF charges from people attempting to take what was no longer in the account. I am happy I got the call because when I spoke with the rep, I was able to confirm that they were in fact in the process of closing the account and that everything would be fine within 24 hours. This is not a fraud.

I called the BOA customer service number and found out that they had made a mistake and hasn't closed an account they should have over a year ago.  Since that time they have been charging maintenance fees causing the account to be overdrawn.  They reversed the charges and hopefully have closed it this time.  I'm glad I called them because I would have had no idea.  Just to be safe I would call the real bank of america customer service number and figure out why they keep calling.

this is not a scam, this is BOA's overdraft department.  I know, because they called me, left a message, I called back, they never asked for my account number or ss number or anything, just my phone number.  And yes I have 1 account overdrawn, they were just giving me a courtesy call, and to top it off they even reduced the amount that I owe.

This is in fact a real number for BOA.  They are the overdraft department. When I called them back, they didn't ask me for ANY kind of information except my home phone number. She provided me with information about my account, etc. to let me know it was overdrawn.  It is not a scam. She said they have only been doing this for about a year now to help customer retention.

Keeps calling. I am at the point I do not even turn on my answering machine. What happened to the "Do Not Call Registry"? No one is being punished for making a telemarketing call. This program has became a big joke. Telemarketing should be getting big fines, but they don't even care anymore, because the program is a total flop.

I too have been recieving these calls. I am a bofa CUSTOMER...i am beginning to wonder if our information is safe with any bank. I don't know  but I spent two hours with BOFA and none of them had called me, nor my father in law. This ticks me off beyond belief. I have had enough of people trying to steal  my husbands hard earned money. These people need to be cought. Bad enough they call me, but my father in law too. Now he thinks I am some kind of criminal or something.

It's a valid Bank of America telephone number.

Low Overdraft Services (866.512.7171)
A Bank of America department that was created in early 2007 to contact customers with accounts (regardless of account status) that have been overdrawn for over 20 days consecutively for under $300.

We call to make sure you are aware of the account being overdrawn, to make sure it isn't fraudulent transactions that caused the account to be overdrawn, verify you still have your debit card in your possession, to see when you will be able to make your next deposit, offer services to prevent overdrafts in the future, note your account, and to see if there's anything we may do to assist with the amount due and retain your business.

A dialer system calls with an automated message and states it's a non-marketing call with an urgent message regarding your account information and provides a message code. That code expires with a couple days, which is why a representative would ask your for your number to look it up on the call list.

If you connect to a representative, they will only ask you the standard security questions to access your account, the same questions that are asked when you call Bank of America customer service (800.432.1000).
Those questions may include:
-Mother's maiden name
-Verbal password
-Three digit code
-Driver's license or State ID number
-City and state / banking center where your account was opened
-Address and date of birth
-Number and type of accounts
-Number or type of accounts linked to your card
-Amount and location of last ATM transaction
-Amount and payee on recent cleared check
-Joint owners date of birth
-Joint owners mothers maiden name

We ask these questions because we need to make sure the people who answered the phone of the number we called is our customer. We cannot legally give out personal and account information without making sure we are speaking to the account holder, as I'm sure you would not want your private account details given out to just anyone who answers the line.

Two reason why we may call you when you don't have an account are:
-We may have an old phone number for a customer
-We may have entered a customer's phone number incorrectly into our system records (the customer we're trying to reach may have a number only a digit or so off from yours)
-A customer may have given us a wrong number

If we're calling a wrong number, we'll gladly remove the number within a couple business days if you report it.

As always, if you feel uncomfortable providing the answers to the questions we ask, please visit your local banking center or call the number on the back of your card.

And the reason why a Bank of America employee would search the number on the internet and contribute to message boards, such as this one, is because we find humor in the number of people who think we're fraud when we're only calling to help. Members of our department also mentioned that our number was being posted on these sites and claimed as a scam, so we wanted to have a look for ourselves to see just exactly what people were saying.

I recieved the "call" today and picked up to the hold music.  I was annoyed because I am a police officer who works night shift and was fast asleep when they called.  After about 3 or 4 min a man picked up and wanted to verify my wifes information.  I was very annoyed because of being called while sleeping then picking up and being placed on hold.  The man told me I needed to verify a few previous address's and my wifes information.  Finally I told him to call my wife and never call the house again unless there's a living breathing human on the line.  As I was hanging up on him I heard him say he'd put me on the do not call list.  A subsequent call to BOA by my wife revealed they never cold call and they do not use an auto dialer that places you into a que when you pick up.  I was also told to pay very close attention to my account activity in the near future.
