I just received a call on my cell phone from a guy claiming to be from Publishes Clearing House staing that he was a delivery driver and about 30 minutes away from my house and wanted to know if it was ok for him to stop by.  I said no and that I had sold the house.  He then asked me to call his manager at 876-849-8000 extension 101, the managers name is David Green, he also gave me a claim number to ask about.  I had a feeling this was a scam and started looking on the internet.

Prank Call
Scammers called me today claiming I won Publishing Clearing House Prize.  I went through the motions, called this special number and asked for "Mr Green" (I should have gone with my instincts THEN) - He went through a whole scripted dialogue but I denied giving him any more information or money until my "prize" actually showed up at my house.  The guy then got board with my incessant "no's" because he then started saying sexually inappropriate and perverted things to me.  I said - uh, ok!  Bye bye.  Bizarre - I am concerned these guys have my address and could come to my house.  I called Metro and asked the cops to patrol by my house today to make sure everything looked normal.

welcome to the club. The same thing happened to me he kept me on the phone til I got to the car . when he said something about insurance I told him I was not going to give him any money, he told me to call him back at that number. I called the smyrna police when I got home the police checked the webb and found these messages. I called them back and told them if they showed up at my house they would be arrested for treasspassing. when I made that call I got message machine and not the clearing house operator.

Caller claimed I had won a prize from PCH - $255,000!  They wanted to give me my check at home and  I had to leave work to go directly to 7-11 to get "insurance on the check" there in the amount of $407, which is a "drop in the bucket compared to what you're getting!".  Thank goodness it sounded too good to be true and I had my husband check it out.  Its a scam.    Don't do it!

A,  As I am sure you now know, there is never a reason to call back an "876" number these foul smelling chiggers provide. NEVER!  Sadly you will discover that the authorities can not/will not do anything to combat these vile creatures. It is up to us - just as "crowd sourcing" helped to locate the Boston bombers - to exterminate this vermin. When these black stained rodents call again - and they will - please:

1) Answer the phone and try to prolong the call (which you did!.)  Ask it to repeat information: its name, its location, etc. The more time it spends talking to you, the less time it has to call other potential victims.

2) Frustrate the caller. If it appears to be in a hurry, talk even more slowly. If it talks slowly, speak rapidly. A frustrated chigger makes mistakes.

3) Determine exactly what information it has about you. Usually it is just your phone number and perhaps your first name. In some cases,  these vile creatures DO have most of your personal information. What should you do in that case? Poison their database. "Oh, that is my old address. Here, let me give you my current one." At which point you can provide the address of a vacant lot or maybe the address of your local police station. Use your imagination.

4) Try to extract as much information from it as possible. There are many variants of this scam currently active. If they are using the "Green Dot Card" version you MUST switch them to a different one (suggest sending them a check but compromise on using a "Moneygram.")

5) Record the call and share that information here in this forum. When you post, please include your area code - JUST your area code - along with your posting name.

Thanks

I wish I would have researched this prior to making the call. My husband got the call and gave me the info to follow on.  A guy David Green 976-849-8000 called and said we won 2.5 million and a dodge journey.  He got frustrated when I asked too many questions.  I did not got the reloaded card as he asked.  When I asked him that I would not be doing it he got upset.

I received a call today from a guy that I couldn't understand very well... He asked me if I knew who I was talking to. I told him I couldn't understand him.. He got aggravated and in a loud voice stated, I'm Bob from PCH.. I hung up, and immediately he called back... I had a bad feeling from the beginning so I didn't answer.. I looked up the number, and I found out it was scam.. I'm truly thankful for the info I received from this forum....

I got a call earlier today. I actually believed it thinking it was true so i did everything they said. They claimed to be publishers clearing house and wanted me to drive ti CVS Pharmacy. Then, get a green dot scratch off card and add $350 onto it. I did all of that and yes, I'm an idiot. My excitement completely clouded my judgement, but they messed up and the phone disconnected from the call multiple times. That caught my attention when I tried to call them back and it said I didn't have the funds to pay. Then I began to sink in my seat. Then he asked for the scratch off code but I never used a greendot card so I gave him the wrong number and I didn't even realize it. He wanted to meet up with me at my home and I told him to meet me at the bank then his voice started to  get higher and I told him no at a bank so he said he would call me back when he enters my city. (I NEVER TOLD HIM MY CITY). He called me back and I asked a series of questions and he gave me the run around on half of them. He hung up again and said he will call me back in 5 minutes and by that time I quickly called greendot money pack customer service and now my money is being refunded. Guys, don't let your excitement cloud your judgement. I, young so when I heard 2.5 million dollars and a range rover i fell for it. smh. I got lucky and all I wasted was a couple bucks in gas to the CVS store. Yes, he did have a jamaican accent. He tried to act like the calls were being transferred but one guy didn't press the mute button and I heard the shuffling. Then I heard kids yelling in the background. Man, I'm thankful I didn't fall for this. They used the number 876-279-5766 and that they were in miami.

Linda,  we have learned that there is a hierarchy among these foul smelling chiggers who are calling using the "PCH" variant of this scam. The first black stained rodent who calls can barely speak English and is reading from a script. Its job is solely to hook you. If you hang up quickly, it merely moves on to the next number - the next potential victim. If it thinks it has you hooked, it will pass your number on to a "manager," who is essentially a more skilled con artist who will call you back. When these vile creatures call again - and they will - please:

1) ANSWER THE PHONE and try to prolong the call (ask it to repeat information: its name, its location, etc.)
2) Frustrate the caller (if it appears to be in a hurry, talk even more slowly. If it talks slowly, speak rapidly. A frustrated chigger makes mistakes.)
3) Determine exactly what information it has about you (usually it is just your phone number and perhaps your first name. Unfortunately, in one variant of this scheme this vile creature DOES have most of your personal information.)
4) Try to extract as much information from it as possible (there are MANY variants of this scam currently active e.g. "Green Dot Card," Moneygram) and, most importantly
5) Record the call and share that information here in this forum. Please include your area code - JUST your area code - along with your posting name.

Thanks

Received a call from the above #10minutes ago/ 7/18/13.   Found it suspicious since I did not enter the Publishers Clearing House contest.  I told him so after he said someone would be at my door in 45 minutes, same as Connie above.  I was urged,  urged to call immediately.

I DID NOT CALL.  Instead I typed that @ into Google and found that yes, it is a Jamaica  # and therefore I believe it to be a scam.   Do Not Call That number

DO NOT return the call from someone calling from a 876 area code.
This is not a toll free "800" number, it is the international long distance code for the island nation of Jamaica. You are charged international and long distance rates for calling this number. Other international/long distance area codes are 809, 284, and 649.
http://www.att.net/smartcontrols-809AreaCode

Scammers use these number to not only try to scam you out of money, but also sting you with high phone call rates.

A SUPPOSEDLY UPS DELIVERY DRIVER CALLED AND TOLD ME I NEEDED TO CALL THE NUMBER NOW ABOUT MY PACKAGE. WHEN I CALLED, TOLD ME I HAS WON 250,000 AND A DODGE JOURNEY FROM PUBLISHER'S CLEARING HOUSE, AND THEY WOULD BE AT MY HOME IN 45 MINUTES. DIDN'T BELIEVE THEM, AND ENDED CALL BY HANGING UP ON THEM. DECIDED TO SEE WHERE CALL CAME FROM, AND IT SHOWS IT CAME FROM A MOBILE NUMBER IN JAMAICA.
