Wow, I have no idea where to start, since this post is so misleading it is not even funny. First off you are getting "Free" advice from a consumer reporter and a radio "Lawyer" which is worth about as much as you paid for it. Furthermore, if this so called "Lawyer" actually said what you just wrote he should be disbarred.
Debt Collectors must follow certain rules spelled out in the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act (Federal) and also State Laws if they are more stringent than the FDCPA. Upon initial contact they are required to send you by mail (not E mail) a letter giving you their name, the creditor, the amount, and also your right to dispute the debt within 30 days. This will not restart the clock on any debt. You are within your rights to send them by US Mail a letter stating that you dispute the debt, and again the clock will not be restarted. They then must stop contacting you until the debt has been verified by the creditor.
If they are calling you about someone else, you simply get their company name, and address and send them a cease and desist letter and they will not be allowed to contact you again without violating the law. You do not need to say anything to them or even lie to them, but simply send the letter. This again will not restart the clock on the debt. Telling them the person died can have drastic repercussions for that individual should his credit report be marked as deceased causing bank accounts to be closed down, Social Security and other payments to cease, and tax problems as well. Besides they probably will not believe you without some sort of proof anyway.
Collectors get paid on commission on what they actually collect so if the collect nothing from you they get nothing. Where you came up with the $5.00 for every person I have no idea, but you must have been listening to someone even less informed than you (if that is possible).
So, unless you have verified everything you are planning to post, please do post gossip (which is what this basically is) or misinformation as no one will benefit from it.

Our consumer reporter and radio lawyer both have said that the minute you respond to these collection (dead files) people, (who have no proof you are or are not who they're trying to collect the final $10 on a closed Mervyns account from) YOU REACTIVATE THE ACCOUNT AS IF YOU JUST MADE THE CHARGES THIS MONTH, and then after that they are actually within their rights to start hounding you as if the debt just happened. Best to ignore them, DO NOT RESPOND is what our consumer reporters say to do. DO NOT ENGAGE THEM.
HOWEVER, I think that if they are phoning you about someone who used to live at your address, you can say so. Even if it was your mother (but don't tell them that) and even if you know how to reach them. (My recommendation: "Oh, he DIED ten years ago...sorry."
You can also BLOCK annoying calls using MrNumber (cell phones) and your Telephone Company has a blocking function as well, may be a fee service.
Just whatever you do, don't admit you are who you are to a collection agency calling about stale debts. They harass you like that cos they get like $5 for every person they catch.

This number appeared on our computer screen along with the message that our "Computer may be infected with one (1) virus."
Uhm...wouldn't Norton be sending that message, if this was true? And wouldn't Norton actually be sending a message that told me "we just blocked a virus from getting in" rather than, "oopsie daisy, one slipped past, too bad!"
Boggles the mind.

#1 they are not a scam. They are a bill collector for Comcast. So, if you are gettting the call you most likely owe unless they have a wrong # or wrong person. I know I owe...but I can't pay right now so I let the calls go to voice mail. Wrong thing to do and I intend to pay eventually. no fun dodging phone numbers. If you Man up......and claim it at least.

this number keeps calling saving it is not a collection or a debt they are calling about but they want my SSN. Since I don't owe anyone, I tell them to send me any paper work and they say they have and ask for my address for verification. I tell them they have it if they are sending me paperwork. I give them my lawyers number and they respond by saying they can't call a lawyer. So I tell them not to call me and remove my number from their records. Calling the number back I get a Daniels Credit Corporation. When my wife called it was Credit Protection Services.

Hi,
I am writing on behalf of Credit Protection Association (CPA). CPA is a third party collections agency and work in the cable and utilities industries. To access your account or to retrieve more information, visit www.paycpa.com or you may contact us at 1-800-800-6499.

we been recieving these calls for several months...........it's a scam......if it were a true collection agency they would already have all of your relevant personal info and would not be asking you to give it to them. Good rule of thumb, NEVER give things like your address, work number, SS number etc..... to a 1-800 number that you are not familiar with. And threatening to call a lawyer always seems to help, lol.

says they are a credit protection agency but in fact are a debt collector for comcast cable.

| Kim 2012-03-06 16:18:37 Unknown |
I called them back also because they kept calling my new trac phone. They were looking for someone else, but I warned him if they call me again, I will go to whomever in the gov't who can make it stop. He took my number and hopefully, I will not hear from them again. Could they be involved in a plot to use up cell phone minutes? I wonder.

Comcast dipwads have been trying to collect $72.00 for equipment I have proof I returned almost a year ago. I even faxed the receipt to them. And they have even admitted they have the equipment and apologize. Still keep sending threatning cards. Now they have reported me to the credit bureau. I guess it is time to start a lawsuit. Mabe that will get their attention

This company keeps calling although I have asked to be removed from their calling list. Since I unlisted my number I get the mostr calls from Credit Protection Association, have talked to Bernard, Felica, Nadine and a floor supervisor to no avail. I will not give them additional information, they already have an erronous file.
