I received a call from a number with the same area code as where I live, telling me to call this 877 number back about a legal matter.  This isn't the first time I received a call like this.  Then I received in email in my spam folder from stating that attached was my notice to appear in court.  I tried to open the file but there was nothing in it???  The email came from details005@pennslawyer.com.  I searched the name, couldn't find anything.  I would assume that if there was an actual notice to appear in court, I would be served papers and I haven't been.  I have no idea what this could be for but in the past when I have gotten strange phone calls they tell me I owe various different companies (that I never heard of) some outrageous amount of money.  Last time they used the name US Bank.  I have NEVER borrowed money from US bank on a loan or a credit card.

I received a call on my cell phone and at work...stating that their client is trying to decide how to proceed.  They are dialing in using my home area codes (cell phone and work area codes are different).

Called me about my us bank account I opened in april 2006 and closed in 2010. What a load of garbage. i moved to florida in june of 2006 and there is no us bank there. We had us bank awhile back but when we moved we had 2 other banks and it was probably 2005-2005 when we had one. I guess if you throw enough crap at a wall something will eventually stick but I am not falling for this scam.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you

.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Also asked me the last 4 digits of my social. And they will see me in court. The time frame of the card was 2004 to 2008 then changed to 2003 to 2008. Sick of them with their crap. I didn't own any credit card during that time period also stated they are not debit collectors they are lawyers.

Same story.  Got a call from this number and a person named Mark Thomas at X203...sounds like whoever is at X203 uses many names.  They left me a nasty message.  I called them back after discovering they are trying to collect from me a debt belonging to my exwife that is more than 6 years old.  In my state, it is illegal to try to collect on any debt over 6 years old.  I recorded the call...informed Mark Thomas that what he was doing is illegal and I could file a law suit against his company.  I also informed him I was recording the call and I demanded that they no longer call me...which is another law in my State.  He said he wasn't going to let it go and that I can do what I have to do...they will do what they have to do and that he wouldn't call me anymore.  If I receive a call from them in the future, I will file a lawsuit against them.

Its a scam.  They are trying to collect on a debt that's over 7yrs old and was written off by the original collector, which is illegal in my state.  After a few calls from the 877# I blocked the number.  Within a day or two the same recorded message came from a local number in my area code.  So they are sneaky but I just blocked that # also.  They will give up shortly when they realize they will not get anywhere with me.

Yep, all the above. Has been calling my parents and myself. mentions a case number and litigation but never what its all about. Never says attempting to collect a debt. I've called back once and it rang forever and then told me an extension I didn't ask for was busy. Started with the Stirling guy, now it's a female. Not sure what it's all about but I guess I'll take my chances. Good luck everyone.

My sister and future mother-in-law have both received calls from this 8776588917 phone number. They told them that a civil suit was being filed against me. So afterwards, I called them and they told me the same thing. I sense that it was a scam because first of all they should not have told anyone my personal info. Also I knew it was a scam, because the company that is supposedly suing me, I have never dealt with this company. Don't believe them, it is a SCAM!

Got a call frrom a character named Kyle Sterling, he said I had an outstanding bill from sleep number. Which I did have at one time. I had paid it off years ago, now he says if I do not pay $5000, he will submit my file to an attorney which will in turn file a lawsuit on me. I asked him to let me check with my bank, so he says I can give you a couple of days. While I'm checking with my bank for payment, he calls again. I tell him the bank has not gotten back with me with any information yet for payment to sleep number/select comfort. He says, you would have paid HC processing as it was in collections. I said, OK, and he provides me with a phone # to HC processing for me to call. I called HC processing, with the # he provided me, and a woman answers, and just says "HC". After speaking with her a minute or two, I hear what I believe to be a child playing in the background. Hmmmm, I say, this sounds fishy. She says it will take her a day to look up my records, I say, well this Kyle Sterling guy tells me I have until the end of the day. She says "OK, I will call him". Like she would know him???? When Kyle calls me next time, he will be getting an earfull!!!! By the way I did a revers phone look up on this number, it appears to originate from France.    SCAM

This number called my wife's ex-husband looking for me. Said to call 877-658-8917 x1 to prevent legal action.  I called number.  They referred to something in 2007.  Never knew what they were talking about.  I told them not to call my wife's ex.  They just kept bringing up court.  Even though it sounds like a scam, we haven't figured out how my wife's ex's phone and my name got connected.  Told them not to call any of us back.

Also received a call from UNKNOWN number with the call back number of 877 658 8917 ext 203. The name was James something that sounded like Allson. Claiming that it was about a legal matter and his office will be open until 9pm (what legal office is ever open that late...seriously?) Most of what he said was slurred, never answered the call this guy left a voice message. So first thing did a online search under that number and found this site. Yup sounds like a total scam. It's called people go get yourselves a REAL job to pay your bills. There has been a lot of "debt collection" scams going on lately. Never just assume it is legit .... do your homework people would rather scam others than go flip burgers and make an HONEST living. Sad.

I have been getting calls from this number since July, they told me they were trying to collect on a debt tht I had paid off 3 years ago. I had faxed them the letter showing tht the debt was paid. But they said it wasn't. They told me I either pay the debt or tht would take me to court & but it in the local newspaper. I ask if they would send me something showing wht I owe & they said that they will send me something once the debt is paid. So stupid I fell for it & gave them my acct number. I paid 3 payments & got another call from another guy stating that LPS sold the acct to them & I have to pay them $3000.00 to settle it. Long story short I canceled the card & they still call saying they are going to take me to court. So the last time they called I gae them a piece of my mind & told them to see them in court. I just hate knowing I gave them money tht I work hard for. They just scare u so watch out for a Dave Thomas or Michael Benson.

any debt collector by law has to state this is an attempt to collect  debt. someone from this # and "company" called from a private # (code for BS#1) then asked for a statement of intent before looking at suing (BS#2 since odds are its past state statute of limitations)
so probably a super old debt that they use as scare tactic.

If the debt is over your state's debt statute of limitations they are actually breaking the law but suggesting they are planning on suing.

so tell them to file away but look for a counter suit if they are not legally allowed to sue. ALSO doubt they are registered with your current states to actually collect on the debt they are calling you on.

good luck people!
