Just received a message from one of your RJA Reps. trying to get my company's business. His message was "I'm calling in regards to some invoices owed to your company". Because of the way he left the message, I thought it was one of our 10,000 plus  customers. Wasted my time looking for the account, before calling my "customer" back. Even before reading the comments here, I would NEVER use your company.

You really need to study the laws a little more. There are still laws for commercial collections. Calling relatives of a debt is definitely one of them.

Just inform them they have made many violations of the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act.  First, they're lying. They cannot garnish wages without 1st receiving a judgment in court. Disability cannot be garnished. If they told your mother it was a collection call, yup another violation. If the debt is only in your husband's, telling you is another violation.

BBB will do little. First, tell them under FDCPA you have the right to demand they made no further contact either by phone or mail. They can still sue your husband. If they call again, contact your state's Attorney General's office.

These guys have called my cell phone and home phone while I'm working, of course I didn't answer due to it being restrictived and I never answer numbers I'm not familiar with. I have no idea why they are calling me? I sold a business over 4 yrs ago and all responsibility went with the company. Maybe they should call the company that they have the issue with since there are new owners for the last 4 yrs and leave me and my personal life alone, it's called harassment ! This company needs to get the info straight before they start calling people. No professional at all, very shady.

Richard James and Associates is a horrible place.  I have a friend that worked for this company and she was horrified at the way they were taught to be pushy and rude. Companies beware of this company and the associates.  The reason you go to a collection agency is to get your money, but not at the expense of your own companies good name.  Stay far away from this company! Find a much more professional one.

It would be nice to have given the results of your complaint! Since you didn't I will, the result was "not a valid claim do to accusing the wrong company". Make sure you do your research before you file a complaint!!

In response to Cindyt who posted on 10 Aug 2012:
I don't think your inforation is accurate.  They are COMMERCIAL collectors meaning they collect from BUSINESSES who owe money to their businness clients.  Commercial collectors do not go after individuals unless that individual is the owner, principal or personal guarantor of the business/business debt.  For example, If you had your own network marketing business and you bought advertising from a company and then never paid, you can't say these collectors can't call and hound you for money you owe to the advertising company.  They can call you because you were acting in the capacity of you business.  If you bought a guitar on your personal credit card from a store and used that guitar to occasionally perform at weddings, school functions, etc., that store can damn well hire a commercial collection agency to go after you because you are using the item you had purchased to function as a business.  So Cindy, if they really are hounding you, you may want to pay your bill because commercial collection laws for agencies are completely different than personal or retail collection laws from individuals.  Under commercial collections laws, they can play hard ball if they have the documentation to prove you owe the debt AND they can sue you on behalf of their client.  If you wrote a bad check, they can take it straight to the district attorney in your county to have you prosecuted for criminal check fraud and not only will you have to pay back what you owe,, there are additional fines and a criminal ding on your record.  Sorry, something is fishy here.

debt collection is tough?  So much so that it your companies policy not to announce your companies name and the nature of the call.   Your company should preform some due dilligence before taking on clients and the background of the client's client and circumstances surrounding the claim.

Maybe someone in your companies jurisdiction will file suit, then after judgement... You can collect on behalf of the plantiff against YOURSELF!

They calledmy home & left a threating message that they were wanting to readmy husband his rights and they were going to garnish his wages. The only income we have is my husbands dissability.A Mr.Carter called and he called my mother twice and then I tried to talk to him.He argued with me and then said he was suing my husband.I filed a complaint with the better buisness beaureau. The guy is a jerk.My husband has alot of health problems & really bad nerves. He was so upset by the message this Mr. Carter left ,that I had to try to calm him down.He said he was just going to tell the company he was collecting for that I refused to cooperate & I never said that!

It's a shame that telemarketers are vague too, so that makes it hard on us front desk employees who are paid to screen unwanted calls. Maybe RJA you could say something without saying anything like: We are calling in regards to a contract that so and so has signed and I'm sure they don't wish their personal business be discussed.  Surely if you are a debt collector some sort of contract has been signed so it's not a lie.  I use to be a debt collector for a very large bank so I "understand" how frustrating your job is. You aren't allowed to disclose someone's personal business and we aren't suppose to pass on any message with out complete information.  If I don't give my employer the caller's name, cl bk #, detailed reason for cllg they throw it away right in front of me.  You guys may have to start making house calls :)!!  Because I googled the number and read your response I will definetly pass the information on to my employer and put reason for calling: Debt collector!

FYI:  Richard James and Assoc. is commercial debt collector and AR service firm.  Half the people who call are clients, the other half are people who owe our clients money.  Some of them are in collections, some are not.  If the receptionist tells a "hardcore debtor" that we are a collection agency they may simply mark the number and never answer.  If we tell a current "audit" debtor that we are a collection agency they may panic and begin jumping to conclusions about the account, even though they aren;t in collections.  It is good business practice, and standard industry practice, to be vague on this point until your account can be accessed.  It is not intended to be deceptive, it is intended to not mis-inform, or sometimes to not lose our one oppportunity to talk to a severly past due company owner.

Got a message from Jessica R at Richard James & Associates to call 877-816-0242.  I called back and asked what type of company they were and was asked if I was returning a call.  I advised that yes I was, and still wanted to know what type of company they were.  They said they have lots of companies under this number and it all depends upon who was calling me amd what extension they were at so I could be connected...  I let them know that if they couldn't tell me what kind of company they were - I was convinced it was a scam and hung up!
I won't work with this company if they aren't up front about their business practices!
