These people are the worst of the worst!  They call every day, at odd hours, and sometimes three times a day.

I have AT&T and went ahead and forwarded their calls directly to my voicemail.  Never once have they left a message.

They can keep calling but I won't hear the phone ring.  And I'll keep reporting them.

It's to the point, but incorrect. There is no renewable "7 year clock on your credit report". Charlene had, like many people, confused the seven year FCRA time limit for reporting derogatory accounts with a state Statute of Limitations. Plain old consumer debt tradelines *must* disappear from credit reports after year 7.5 regardless of their status. It is SoL which can be reset by a promise to pay or actual payment, depending somewhat on where you live.

This number has been calling and calling. Finally decided to answer and ask what's up. Initially there was a recording on the line, but when I yelled hello, the line transferred to a live person who identified himself "Jerrold" at Northland Group and this call would be monitored for corporate compliance, blah, blah, blah when he finally finished his speech he asked for a person that has never been at this number, nor have they ever been.

He thanked me and said good-bye. Hopefully this will be the last.

Number is for:
Northland Group Inc.
7831 Glenroy Road, Suite 250
Edina, MN 55439

Unfortunately for the caller this company is pure scum and doesn't even try to get things right. But in all fairness in this economy booze and broads (sorry ladies) are expensive and a man's gotta do what a mans gotta due.

Yes, it is a collection agency and once again they are lying to scam someone out of money.

The laws are very specific and these lying, cheating, stealing a***oles know this. So, once again write a letter and demand they validate the so-called debt (most cases they cannot) and demand they stop calling.

Send the letter return service requested to the President at their HQ office:

Lance Black, President
Northland Group Inc
7831 Glenroy Road # 110
Edina, MN    55439-3136
Phone: (952) 831-4005

Better yet if you can find the golf course nearest this business (as a lazy CEO / President he should be there and not at his company and then show up and break Lance's legs and blow a boat horn in his ears.
If you blow a whistle and loud horn and damage the callers eardrum and hearing too bad so sad. No one made you take this job and we most certainly don't want your calls especially when you are calling here for the wrong person. If their s****y lawyer sues (usually has no jurisdiction in your home state) you get your day in court and the lawyer must prove you actually did this and that you actually caused pain and suffering. Things are different in a civil court. The lawyer also most prove the debt, no proof, no debt and they must pay per federal law. Counter sue them.

HRG2: Provide proof about the lawsuit that happened as a result of a person suffering damage to their hearing or shut-up. Very bold statements for a minimum wage worker who no doubt works less than 40 hours a week.

This number was trying to call my business fax machine.  Obviously cold-calling, and from the looks of the above posts, just trying to get information by threatening debt collections.

My advice: 1 - don't answer.  2 - if you answer by mistake, do not give them any information, including confirming your name, or any other information they ask for. 3 - if they are calling your cell, download a call blocking app and add the number to it.

I did one better, I changed my phone number. But, before that I called him out as a scam and then proceeded to curse me out because I refused to pay it. Wow, these scammers are getting desperate.

They wanted to speak to my wife and would not tell me what they wanted. I told them there was no way I'm going to allow them to speak with her unless they told me who they represent. He refused so I told him he wasn't going to speak with her unless he told me  his business, He said fine I'll just hang up. I hung up on him.

I am going to take a leap here and say you are one of those people who took out a slew of credit card and went crazy spending them and when you found out you could not pay them off got pissed off when they wanted you to pay what you agreed to pay.  Perhaps you gat a car loan and after the car was repossessed and sold at auction you thought that you did not have to follow the terms of the contract and pay the difference.
Perhaps I am wrong and you were hit with by a scam company.  Most likely not as most of the AG cases are directed at companies that are now pretty much barred from collections and are reduced to paying fines as they stack up.  Just FYI.  Because you were called as a witness does not make you an expert on anything.  You were a victim.
Oh ya, LOL>

$15/hour is not get rich quick nor is it a scam.  It is a job, a screwed up job but still a job.  Perhaps they had the wrong number, someone used your fathers ssn to get a loan or he did infact take out a loan and either did not remember it or did not tell you.  I do not know your dad, you or this case but when I was a collector I heard this often. It was almost always one of the three above.  The problem is that debt is sold and resold over and over again until it is uncollectable and off the credit report of the debtor.  Most people who freak out and start cussing have active, collectable and true debt and simply can not or will not pay it.  Couple this with the collection companies that are truly trying to get an much out of people as they can and threaten, cuss, collect bad debt and take money from older people who do not owe anything at all and you get people like you who attempt to speak for everyone.  Investigate why they are calling.  If it is something that is not owed then file a complaint with the state AG office where you live.  If it is ID theft file a police report and contact the credit reporting bureaus and start the long process of cleaning up his credit.  If the debt is owen and true than pay it.

File a complaint with the BBB and the AG in your state to create a paper trail of your complaint but do not expect any real action from either place. You will then want to file a lawsuit for violation of the FDCPA.  I would also call the agency back and speak to a manager.  Given that they could face large fines and the possibility of being forbidden to make any collection activity for a while they will most likely give you any info you wish including the name of the collector.  It will not be his or her real name as they all use fake names for personal protection per standard practices. This collector has most likely already been fired already.

Discover sells to third party agencies. Next call ask them for the last 4 numbers of the ssn they have on file.  If they are legit they will be have access to your entire ssn but will not be allowed to tell you the number until you are verified as the correct person.  There are rather large fines for releasing that information to the wrong party.

Not a scam, normally.  It makes me laugh whenever I hear the word scam.  It is so overused that it is starting to lose its effect. What the agency did was a skip trace and you number was associated with your mom because she was your mom.  That is all.  It is also possible that she put your number down as a reference on a credit application or information sheet someplace. That data was collected and sold.

It is not you, it is your phone number. Unless someone used your ssn to get a line of credit.  If that is the case you need to find out what it is for and what address was on the file of the original line of credit. In most cases like this that I have seen it is a relative that got cable, directv and other stuff like that under a younger kids name and ssn. This is normally done by a parent. Make them review the file and you can simply state your month and year of birth to prove you are under 18.  This will blacklist the file and the calls will start to slow.

That is really not the way you want to handle collection calls that are off of your credit report or past the statute of limitations. They will simply keep on calling and calling and calling. The collectors hear the abuse every day and all it does is lower there CHT. They also notate the account so that the next collector will know. IF the debt is still active or you are making payments on a reduced amount this will also be noted and if active your account can be sent for review to the in-house lawyer(s) who review the notes as well as the financial data.  I have seen a lawyer takes cases to court he would not normally bother with because the person on the phone was abusive however in most cases these people decided to reverse things and start calling the collectors themselves and make threats and what not.  If you did make a payment plan at a reduced rate do not be surprised if your next check is not cashed or your next payment is not processed thus voiding out your reduced rate and payment plan.  Blowing rape whistles, air horns and the like into the phone almost guarantee that this will happen.  If you are sued and lose the case then expect them to freeze bank accounts and attempt to garnish pay checks. You can fight this and will most likely win however not having access to your bank account for a month or two has a very negative effect on the debtor.  Also be aware that the agencies have crappy phone systems and headsets and most have no sound filtering so loud noise can cause damage to the person wearing the headsets. Such was a case when a lady was sick of being called and blew an air horn into the phone causing hearing damage to the collector.  The collector filed a suit for the injury and won.  There have also been cases of people being arrested for death and bomb threats.

I worked as a collector for 6 very long months.  The companies are awful and most of the debtors believe the person on the phone is personally responsible for all the calls they receive. Most of these people are simply trying to make a living and was the only job available to them at the time.  They leave as soon as something else comes us but in the meantime they need to put food on the table and a roof over their heads.

If you want the calls to stop send the collection agency a letter stating that you do not wish to be contacted about this or any debt either by phone or mail.  Do not admit to owing anything or any of that s***. Just tell to cease and desist all contact. They will stop and re-sell the debt.  If your account was sold to a third party agency do not attempt to pay of the debt to the original creditor.  They will take your money in most cases but it will not serve to resolve your debt.  If you are negotiating with a collector to pay off a debt be aware that most of the debt can be lowered to about 30% in most cases.  Some simply can not be as the client will not allow it.

You are adults, you guys know how to handle your money and credit.  If you get a card and know you can not pay it off but still use it thinking the company is stupid do not be upset when it rips your credit rating up and the collection calls never stop.

Yes this is a 3rd party collection agency.  What Charlene wrote above is absolutely right.  Don't give them the time of day or it will restart the clock on your account collection.  If you can't pay off the debt let the 7 year clock run out.

Every time you fill out anything...ANYTHING ! with a "privacy policy" or a disclaimer of any kind you run a 99.99 % chance of risk to your name. Face book, Google, Yahoo,  etc, etc, everything collects your info. The only way to stay away from them is to create "false" info . In fact try it for fun and watch companies contact you that "you know" you did not give any info to. You will see that all them so called friendly websites are wolves in sheep clothing. After all , the people who participate "willingly" give it all up for the most part . Or enough to start a track on your name address and of course your "I.P. address" . What more could a data collection company want ? hmmm go figure thumbs up or thumbs down ?" I see your picture, license plate home address, I see your religion, neighbor hood, likes and dislikes yatt yatta". so subtle yet so scary. Stop the use of information with out your express permission. Make it a serious criminal offense for anyone !

Yeah, debt collection called my work number today looking for my sister. He insisted I transfer him to HR. I refused because he was calling about my sister. I told him I didn't know where she is and she sure as heck doesn't work here.
