My Grandma got a call from someone pretending to be me and asked her to send $3,500!  Luckily my poor old grandma has some smart people at the bank because they called my cell to verify and obviouly I'm not in Canada and did not ask her or anyone to send me a money order.  They gave her a Canada address of 465 Dominion Dr. Calgery Alberta and 1-888-217-1830 as a number.  SCAM!!!

My mom received a call almost identical to the one received by Douglas Ganfield in September.  They said the same thing and it took my niece and I to decipher the alarming call was a scam!  My mother is 89 years old and was quite upset after getting this call.  Fortunately, we were able to locate our nephew and grandson and learned that he was safe at work and had not been in an accident, at all!  Everybody has to be safe and suspicious of any phone calls that are made if it doesn't sound right.  I can't have my mother upset this way.  These scam artists need to be stopped!!!

The exact same scame was just done to my Grandpa, except no one caught it in time.  They said to mail the money through moneygram to an address in Toronto, but apparently you can receive the money anywhere in Canada.  When I spoke to moneygram, they said the money was received in Montreal.

My mother got the exact same call today.  Fortunately, the money would not
go through to the address she was given.  These people are obviously professionals at scamming elderly persons!  They were able to get my son's
name by misleading her along with the fact that my son had been in an accident and was so "shook up", he didn't sound like himself.
These people are the lowest level of humanity to be preying on the affections of family members to bilk them out of their hard earned money.
I alerted the Canadian police, the Niagra Falls police dept and our local
police department.
The best advice is to warn all of your loved ones NEVER to send money to ANYONE without getting confirmation of all of the circumstances!
We were lucky - I just hope that these warnings save other innocent people from being taken advantage of by these crooks!

My mother was called (9-25-08) by someone who simply said "Hi Grandma", to which she responded with the first name of the grandson she thoght was calling (voice recognition). The caller then spun a story (very convincingly) that he was in Canada, had been in a car accident, and needed money FAST or they would not let him go. Mom was almost talked into sending a moneygram, but a local banker was suspicious and they explored further. They contacted the actual grandson in question (who was at work in Mississippi) so they confirmed the scam. This number was given to call back to them and was supposedly for Budget car rental (it was constantly busy or no answer). Another male individual called later in the day to confirm that she had sent the money and to get the receipt number. When notified that the police had been informed of the scam he responded with profanity and hung up. A second number was given in addition to this one (800-866-8800). These might be legitimate numbers, but they are being used as part of this scam. Mom was the second person in her small town to be called by these crooks that day. She does not have caller ID so this is all the info we have.
