Defaulting on a loan is a civil matter.  All the loan company can do is sue you in civil court to get a judgement against you.  The debt collector CANNOT sue you unless the debt collector was the original loan provider.  Most debt collectors are a third party to the debt and can only contact you in attempt to get you to send them money to repay the debt.   Make the debt collector send you a demand letter for payment by mail.  They have to do this by law before they can collect anything.  Once you receive this demand letter you must send the debt collector a debt validation letter.  In this debt validation letter you have to request a copy of any and all contracts signed by you for this debt be sent to you so you can determine if the debt is legitimate or bogus.  Most debt collectors are not going to have this.  If they cannot provide this paperwork then they cannot legally collect anything from you.  They cannot threaten to arrest you, seize property, or anything else. If they do contact your state's attorney general and file a complaint.

I.got a phone call from this same number sayin.i got a loan in 2008 with jack hewwitt n they said I was being charged for theft of services if I dont pay $643 back I asked them y am I just being contact after 3 yr tha stated tha ben tryin to reach me with letters and phone calls which I think its bull tha stated that tha was gona present me with a summons if I dont make at least a partial payment n tha also said tha was gona seuzes my vehicle n it was gona cost me alot if money to get it out n my courts fee gona b high n lawyers fees I think it a scam cus I caled harris county tha stated I dont hav any warrants r anything

Apparently this is some type of scam to obtain money. This company calls from 888-271-2830 using extensions such as x473, x474, x475 and tells the person that they are involved in a legal matter, being investigated or a person of interest in a crime. Upon research many other people have reported this number as an attempt to scam money and they will use threatening and harassing ways including calling the person's family members and using threats. I reported this number to the FTC. They keep calling my mother demanding I call back regarding an "important legal matter".

Calling for my sister, obviously a scam: She's been married for years and they are using her maiden name in the calls. Plus, she's never even been to the place where they say she has some legal problem to sort out. Very persistent, we just don't pick up.

I got the same phone call at work saying he was in the my county area to bring a court summins and threating me with going to prison for check fraud. I do not even have a checking account! He said call this number 888-245-0140 Davis and Clark Law Firm so I could make arrangements and he would not serve me with the papers. I tried to look them up but all I got was the phone number is in Massachusetts and nothing else about them. I believe they are running a scam.

Got a call that appeared be from a legal firm.  Wanted to confirm if I was the correct Jane Doe by first reading my birth date.  When I tried to say not me, they tried to confirm the last 4 digits of my social security number.  I immediately objected and the person got nasty and hung up.  At this point I begin remembering a similar call several months ago.  I don't know if this is an operation seeking to connect birthdays, socials and other info to names or if it is really legitimate.  It sure seems like if it was legitimate they would list off all the criteria, the more the better, and let you say yes or no.  If no, the conversation is over with no follow on calls later.  My hunch is that this is not legitimate and what they have is a half dozen Jane Does and a half dozen birthdays, and socials and don't know which data goes together.  If they call a Jane up and try a random selection of the birthdays and socials they may verify a connection on part of the info or rule out a couple of numbers... call back in two months and try another 2.  Next time I will be ready.... what I said last time.  What I would like to do is report this to the right legal authority.

Called from 888-271-2830 x474. They called my Mom stating I must return their call regarding a legal matter.

This a scam and investigation is being done with the FBI info on this is on their website please review details listed on this page to avoid being taken advantage of by these scam artists. Some of the various phone numbers they use are 716-217-1310 or 888-271-2830 in fact most of the people contacted do NOT have a debt their information has been compromised and they are trying to get access to more information including bank accounts.

Have called numerous times stating to be different people on answering machine, Have no idea who they are or what they want assume it is some sort of scam!
