My father-in-law called to tell us that our son (his grandson) was being held in a jail in Bolivia because a cab driver was stopped by the police and marijuana was found in the cab. A person who said his name was Rick Farley with the U.S. Embassy in Santa Cruz, Bolivia was asking for $1,200.00 to be paid by the end of the day. Since we don't have any relatives in Bolivia we determined this to be a scam.

There are going after they elderly as well. Just had a family that they tried to scam. I've reported this info to the FBI. However they were unsuccessful with us. They info they had came from an obituary as that was the only info online regarding any relation to the person the tried to scam. As I said call the FBI if they contact you.

Hi, we were scammed today by an individual who claimed to be my cousin. He said he was being held in a jail cell in Mexico City after being detained while riding in the car of an fellow he had just met the day before. He said that marijuana was found in the car but he had no connection with the drugs and they would release him if we wired bail money through Money Gram. They told us to go to Wall Mart and how to fill out the paperwork. Well, my dad felt it was important to help him out. I suggested that we call my cousins wife to let her know of the trouble and my parents said they were asked not to because my cousin didn't want to startle her. We did send 2000$ via money gram to an Ashley Gold in Mexico City.  Jeffery Bennett was a person who claimed to work at the Embassy working hard to get my cousin released. Another player was a lawyer who phoned me back to say that now my cousin was out on bail and at the embassy he would represent him as an independent narcotics attorney but he needed a retainer sent via Money Gram for 2000$. This was way too fishy so we called the Embassy in Mex. City directly, not using the 888 number above and found that our cousin was not arrested in Mexico. We finally got through to him and he was just getting off a flight coming from El Paso. We think there may be a connection with that city and the scammers because my cousin told us he boarded the flight at the exact time we got the call. The scammers pressured to get the money to them quickly because the longer it took the more time we would have to find out that our cousin wasn't in Mexico. Now we see that this scenario is common and we're out 2 grand. Hope this helps others!
