This toll free number mimics a Citibank Official Check verification number. Citibank?s Official check verification number is 1-866-678-0088.  The number printed at the bottom of this check is a fake number that utilizes an answering machine to verify its checks.  It presents 4 options.  Two of the options don?t work and a third only allows you to leave a message.  Option 1 which is to verify a check only requires the last four digits of the check number and will actually verify the information on the check, making it seem legit.  If you type in a sequential number before or after your number it will sadly list other checks to other victims.  I?m trying to get Citibank to file a complaint to get the number shut down.

Most of these fake official checks are written to law firms and are mailed from Canada.
