asked them well over a dozen times to stop calling, they call constantly , 3 plus times a week. i will never give them a damn thing again!!!! been going on for over a year and they just don't give a damn.

If people stop doing business with any telemarketer or charity or politician who spam calls they would eventually stop.

Yes, this is a scam!  They are the "for profit" side of donations... only a small percentage of what you donate ends up going for charity... the rest ends up in the scammers pocket.  You are better off bringing your unwanted stuff directly to Goodwill where almost every penny goes to their charity programs.

The below link takes you to an article on NJ.com and it explains in detail about how the ugly business of collecting donations for profit works.  It's a must read for those who think this is NOT a scam - IT'S A NATIONAL SIZED SCAM!:

it is the Veterans War Council soliciting for items to be collected. i have donated but no longer do so as i've looked them up online and find that hardly anything goes to Veterans - it's money making for others.  There are better charities to donate items to - like Salvation Army, Big Brothers, Big sisters, or Lupus.

Yeah, who do they help?  They spent $1.1 MILLION dollars on a parade.  Check the 990s at http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay ... 37#.U3QAU_ldU5E .  They spent almost $1 MILLION dollars on direct mailing.  Not 1 dollar went to any veteran.  In 2011 (last 990 filing) they brought in 2.9 MILLION and had expenses of 2.6 MILLION, NONE of which went to a single veteran.  How is a parade going to help a homeless vet?  How is $18,000 in dining expenses helping a hungry vet?  They raise money to spend it on their own publicity.

If you want to help veterans, donate to/volunteer with with Wounded Warrior Project.

wake up people, they block their name and that is suspicious whether they are legit or not. also anybody can open a website and say whatever they want. look at all the 9/11 scammers and people who cashed in on sandy hook tragedy, they had websites too. these people use the non profit scam so they can get around the do not call list, but only a small percentage actually goes to the charity they supposedly represent. somebody is getting a boat load of money but it is not the heroes who deserve it, namely our american vets. my rule of thumb is if the name or number is blocked then don't trust it.

This is a legitimate charity!  It is the United War Veterans Council.  They will pick up your used clothing & household goods.
I have used them often, as they are reliable & will pick up your donations as promised on the date you schedule & leave you a tax deductible receipt.
The items you donate are sold to your local charitable thrift stores at a low percentage rate for their charitable contribution cut & then sold at your local shops like Salvation Army Stores, St Vincent de Paul Shops & etc.
I find that if I am donating my goods, I don't mind their profit sharing from my donations.
I use them with confidence.
I m not sure what other states they operate in, but I am located on Long Island, NY.

After 15 calls in 2 days, I called back and got a recording that I won a $100 visa gift card and to have a credit card number handy to pay for shipping.  I then got an operator who asked if I was calling for a gift card and I said I was calling to be removed from their call list since I doubt this was a legitimate offer.  She hung up.

Scam.

Unfortunately, there is no "legitimate channel" for your mom to get off their list. They will keep calling her for the rest of her life, or as long as she still has the same phone number. Even if you call and ask them to quit calling, they won't. How do I know? Because I tried that. All it did, was confirm that I am a sucker who believes they are legitimate enough to stop calling when I politely asked them to. I talked to a "nice lady" who was very sympathetic: "Oh, of course we'll take your name off our list!"  Not only did they NOT stop calling, they must have sold or given my number to a whole bunch of other scammers, because the junk calls I received went up exponentially after that.

The lesson here is, the more contact you have with these slime balls, even if you're telling them to stop bugging you, the more they will call.

The answer: a phone-blocking system. There are many on the market. I got one from Digitone. It lets me block up to 80 numbers and/or area codes. I blocked all 800 numbers and now my phone automatically hangs up on these losers after one ring. I've had it for 6 months and it has drastically cut the number of these calls I get, because their computer systems eventually register that no one picks up and they quit calling. All except this group! But at least I only hear one ring, then blissful silence.

Good luck and best wishes to you and your mom!

It is not the VA. It is a telemarketer that represents the Veterans War Council based in NY. Approx .10 of each donated dollar goes to help current conflict veterans nothing for other vets (much like wounded warrior project). It's even less for donated items that are picked up by a third party and then sold by another party. So you have 3 entities getting their cut before it even gets to the council

These people called me before 9am!  Do they have no decency?  The United War Veterans Council does not appear on Charity Navigator, nor did the UWVC provide the necessary info to the BBB for a rating.

Until the Feds force the greedmongers at the telecoms to turn off these calls, Nomorobo's the only way to travel.

It's the United War Veterans Council, 346 Broadway, Suite 807, New York, NY 110013. Since it is a charity they do not have to adhere to the DO NOT CALL list. They call all the time but I don't answer anymore. They never leave a message either.

Looks like some people don't like the fact that this number IS for a real charity. It is United War Veterans Council. Below is their website - the Who We Are page has the same contact number: 1-888-821-UWVC(8982). The donation pick-up can be scheduled online but sometimes they do call to see if you've got more to give. I normally don't pick up the calls from them though.

Here is blurb from BBB on United War Veterans. Decide for yourself...

"This charitable organization either has not responded to written BBB requests for information or has declined to be evaluated in relation to BBB Standards for Charity Accountability. Charity participation in BBB review is voluntary. However, without the requested information, it is not possible to determine whether this charity adheres to all of the BBB Standards for Charity Accountability. The BBB encourages charities to disclose accountability information beyond that typically included in financial statements and government filings, in order to demonstrate transparency and strengthen public trust in the charitable sector."

This is NOT a legitimate charity. OK, they're registered as a 501c, but that means zilch. That does NOT mean that they do anything to really help veterans or that they don't keep 99.9% of the money they get from selling your clothes for profit.

OK, sure, they attach their name to some parades and statues and claim they work oh-so-very-hard to "honor" veterans. The parades and statues are mostly run and paid for and staffed by many other vets groups. This parasitical group gets their name on it so they can look good and get more money/clothes from suckers.

Do they actually do anything that really helps veterans? Other than standing around clapping their hands and saying, "Yeah, Vets, woohoo for you." Do they help vets Monetarily? Physically? Medically? NO....

They just have fake parades, then go spend YOUR donations on their own pleasures. Do some googling. Get educated, and stop giving anything to these frauds.

So I actually just spent the last hour reading through the link Elspeth posted.  In all actuality, it seems like this IS a legitimate charity.  The main issue of dishonesty is the misconception that the items being donated go directly to veterans.  This is not the case.  The items are re-sold in bulk to other stores, and the profits are used to fund the NYC veteran parade and for the upkeep of national veteran monuments.  The people involved are volunteers, and the tax returns show none of the employees are taking a salary.  I certainly appreciate that some people feel duped their donations are being filtered into something unintended, but it DOES eventually end up helping veterans.

I think I'll pass this information on to my mother and let her decide if she still wants to continue donating to them.  Bottom line, though, is that she still doesn't want the unsolicited phone calls, and we'll follow the proper channels to get them to stop that.

Thanks, I appreciate you posting that site.

To be perfectly honest, I was simply trying to find a way to encourage my mother to clear out her very, very cluttered home by getting rid of things she doesn't need anymore.  The UWVC seemed perfect, especially since they did the pick-up for free (she uses a walker and doesn't get out very often).  After reading up on these guys, right or wrong, I'd still rather she give her things to people who will eventually use them than just throwing them in the dumpster.  However, I don't like the dishonesty being perpetuated by this charity and will look for another she can donate to in the future, hopefully one that also does a pick-up.

But all things considered, the bottom line is that, for my mother at least, these calls seem to be legit and legal.  I'm going to have her answer the next one and ask to be removed.  That should be the end of it, but I'll file a complaint if they're still calling two weeks later.

Wow, these posts are crazy.

1.  This seems legit.  My mother donated items to the UWVC, so now she's on their follow-up list.  She doesn't answer, but they're not legally obligated to leave a voice message as far as I know.

2.  Charities are exempt from DNC.  They can cold call you.  So are any businesses or companies you had any prior dealings with.  You buy/donate/sell something to a company, they're allowed to call you.  It's also part of the DNC rules, and it's one of the questions the FCC complaint form asks.  And yes, she does get mailings as well as phone calls.  They can do one or both.  They're not limited to mailings.

3.  They are NOT allowed to call you during non-business hours, and they are legally obligated to remove your number from their calling and/or mailing list when you request it.  If you're still receiving calls two weeks after that, you are allowed to file a complaint.  There's also a limit on how often they can call you (I think it's once a day, but I'm not sure), but that's only if you pick up the phone or if they leave a message (which is why so many of these guys usually don't).  Charities are the only iffy number I'm ever willing to answer, because they're within their legal bounds, and they're usually pretty good at removing your number.  At least for me.  It seems some posters have had pretty bad experiences with these guys.

Now that I know this appears to be a number with someone she's had business with, I'll tell my mother to answer the next call and ask to be removed from the list.  We'll see how it goes.
