I got the same message! After I read it, I thought it was strange that I needed to fill out a credit report before I even see the house itself! I had to fill out some of that stuff when I applied for an apartment. So I didn't think it was a big deal at first. But then they said at the end they aren't giving out their contact info, which is ridiculous. As a business woman, I know no one does that. I'm going to email back anyway just to catch them in more lies. Here is the message:

Hello,

First and foremost, thank you for your interest in the home. I am available to show the house this week if that fits your schedule.

Just to give you a little more information about the home, the water, trash
and garbage are paid by us. The security deposit can be paid in 2 installments if money is tight. (I know how that can be).
The house has a fenced in backyard and we do allow pets. The deposit per pet is a one time payment.
The house includes a washer and dryer, and we pay for lawn care so the renter does not have to cut the grass.
There is NO application fee (our company policy and guarantee).

I will be happy to show the house at an agreed upon time and date but I do require that all applicants and additional renters who will be living in the home complete a free credit report to ensure their eligibility.
I have so many people apply for homes that I have to make sure they are qualified renters before I show the property.
This ensures neither of us will be wasting our time.

It is okay if you have bad credit (trust me). We just check to make sure that you don't have several evictions on your record. (We won't rent if you have 3 or more evictions on your record)

I also had to recently stop giving out the exact address of rental properties before I am able to show them because last time I did that the house was vandalized (I will be glad to send you the address right after your reply) I assure you though that this is a very safe neighborhood. I actually lived in this home for 2 years (very cozy).

As soon as you can, please click the link below and go to the secure website to complete the free credit report (takes about 30 seconds)
Once you complete, I'll call you once I receive the information from the credit company (very quickly usually).

wbicheckscore.org/86vLRnjQ8Q/
(Copy and paste this link to your address bar if it is not clickable)

*** You don't have to send me your credit report.
Once you fill out the report the credit company automatically forwards me your name, email address and whether you have
had any outstanding evictions in the past 5 years to determine your renter eligibility. This is the only information I am
interested in. This is a soft credit report so it won't touch your FICO score (which is why we work with them).

This process turns some people off, so I completely understand if you decide not to complete them. In that case, good luck with your home search. I just want to be honest with you up front about our process, which does a good job of protecting us from ineligible renters and scammers. Also, the site above is one the safest and most secure website for credit reports in the world, which is good for peace of mind. I have worked with them personally for a couple years now.

If you are truly interested in proceeding, take a moment and fill out one of the reports. Let me know when this is done and we can then work out the time and date to go see the home. Email me back once you access your fresh report. I will be forwarded
the information. (Make sure to include a valid phone number. I usually call within 6 hours of submitting your report. Then I can forward you the address and we can set up a time to tour the home.)

If eligible you will also be sent an email with my office number so we can set up a time to go see the house and discuss any other questions or concerns you may have.

Thanks,
Richie

Same in Kansas. It's Lisa now. If you did click on the report, contact all 3 of the big credit companies, let them know that you filled this out, and to put a freeze on your credit access.  Also if your identity was stolen, file a police report.  You will need a police report, in case you need to file and affidavit of fraud, in the case they you need to get bogus charges taken care of. My identity was stolen 7 years ago (my college posted our SSNs online, how stupid is that?) and what I described is what I had to do to reconcile false purchases using my SSN.

I got this message like everyone else but i was wondering what the house looks like. The one she describes here is $950 / 4br - Huge 4 bdrm 2 bath Cathedral celing home. Garage Fenced yard (St. Cloud, MN 56304 )
and message goes like this;
Jennifer,

Hi, I want to thank you for showing your interest in the home we listed. The property is move-in ready and all set to go. We can have someone available for showing it this week; just let us know your schedule. Here are a few things you may want to know about the home. The average utility cost is just over $100 per month. The other basic utilities including water, sewer, and garbage are included so we take care of those. You would of course provide your own phone, TV, and Internet service. This is an unfurnished home; however we do supply all the major appliances. This particular home also has a washer and dryer in it. If you have your own, we will be happy to remove them for you. We also provide lawn service to take care of the yard.

We understand that it is often difficult to come up with the full rent and deposit at once so we offer an optional 2 month installment plan on your deposit. Just let us know if this is your preference. We do allow you to bring your pets to this property, the backyard is fully fenced. The deposit fee is for each pet you have and can be included in the installment plan. Rent and deposit are the only cost for moving in; we don't charge an application or screening fee.

Let us know the best time for you to view the home in advance and we will be happy to make ourselves available. We do require a free credit report for eligibility from all of our applicants as well as anyone else that will be living in the home. This pre-qualification helps us to choose only eligible tenants from the many applicants we receive prior to showing the home. It also ensures that neither party is wasting their time.

We aren't concerned with your credit; bad credit isn't even a factor in our screening process. We are looking to see if you have had any evictions in your recent history. More than two evictions will disqualify you from renting with us.

We will provide the address right after you apply. I do this because I once had a problem with vandalism in a vacated home so I need to avoid it for the tenant?s sake as well as my own. Rest assured, the neighborhood is very safe, in fact I used to live there and found it to be very cozy and the neighbors are friendly.

To start the application process, please click on the secure free credit report link I am providing below and complete the forms. It is a short form so it only takes about 30 seconds. The credit company provides me with the information right after you complete it (usually almost immediately) and I will call you once I have received it.

((((FREE   REPORT/affordablerentalproperty))))

Please do not send me your credit report.

Many people try to save the info and either mail or email it to me, this is not necessary. Once you have finished, I receive an automatic response including your name, email, and a list of any evictions you have had any within the past 3 years. We use only this information for your eligibility determination. This type of credit report will not affect your FICO score since we are not requesting financial credit history (it is known as a soft credit report). That is why we use this particular credit reporting agency.

This agency requires a credit card for you to receive your report, but they DO NOT charge it. Just be sure that you cancel with them before the week is up so you don't pay the monthly fee of $14.95.

(We have never charged an application fee and don't intend to start doing so)

Some people are hesitant with our screening process, and we fully understand if you feel the same. If you are one of these people, we wish you well in your search for a new home. We choose to be honest about our requirements and upfront right from the start so we can avoid wasting time with those who do not qualify and possible scammers. This leaves us free to work with serious and qualified tenants. We chose (((FREE   REPORT/affordablerentalproperty)))) because they are known as safest online credit reporting agency in the nation. They also offer a secure website connection to protect your information safely. We have used them for 3 years and they are the only credit agency we will work with.

Please, only proceed if you are truly interested in renting the property. Take a brief moment to fill out the credit form. Once you have finished and have viewed your report, please contact me via email. By then I should have received the information as well. When you email me, please include a phone number. I usually call within 4 or 5 hours to confirm and scheduled our meeting. After an appointment has been scheduled, I will send you the address to the house.

Once you have passed our screening, I will email you with the number to my office as well. Feel free to call me there for scheduling. Also, don't hesitate to call if you have any further questions about the home.

Sincerely,
Lisa Fields

I too was a victim of this I should have know better...I called National Credit Report.com yesterday and they were very helpful..they told me that they denounce activity on Craig's List and told me about a consumer advisory that they issued in January...you can see it here:  http://www.nationalcreditreport.com/index.cfm/News_PR_01282010

Question is when is Craig's List gonna own up and take responsibility for the crap that is taking place on their site...maybe the FTC needs to focus their efforts here...

HERE IS THE DEAL . . .

Scenario #1: "Mandi Moore" joined the "NationalCreditReport.com" Affiliate Program and for every moron that goes and fills it out she makes money and anyone that forgets to cancel will be charged a fee if they entered CC info and she earns more commission on that. See Affiliate ID(affID/1129) at the end of Her "Link"----> http://www.nationalcreditreport.com/index.cfm/offer_FCSTELP/affID/1129 - FYI - This method of getting clicks is against every LEGIT affiliate program policy that I have ever seen.

Scenario #2: "NationalCreditReport.com" is a bogus site and "Mandi Moore" is harvesting SSN right after you morons enter them.  I called their toll-free number and the guy admitted they were just a "call center" taking calls for "NationalCreditReport.com".  This neither verifies they are Legit or Non-Legit.  It only means that they have someone answering the phone...could be in China for all I know.

Scenario #3: "Mandi Moore" is simply harvesting email addresses and may or may not make a buck from the affiliate program while doing so.

FRAUDSTERS will continue to pull these scams as long as people on the web are ignorant enough to play along.  Do YOUR due dilligence before giving ANY personal email.  I even set-up a new Yahoo! email address before I ever responded to the Craigslist rental ad here in Indiana because it felt "off" from the time I read the ad.  However, I wanted to test just to see if it was phony...what do you know, I spotted them before they got me!!

My advice...RUN and maybe send a complaint through the "NationalCreditReport.com" contact us form without sending any personal info. Reference "Affordable Rentals, LLC and Affiliate ID1129!!!!!

At least this doesn't appear to be that bad of a scam. the deal is, he or she is getting paid for the referal which is legit. they don't get any of your info like phishing does. they just get $2 for tricking you into signing up..... slick, but not really illegal. still look out though.
