Good post. Everybody read up on this and learn what the law requires of these charlatans. They often violate the law. Just record each violation. The more there are the more you can win in court. This could run into thousands easily.

You buy the debt for pennies on the dollar and take down huge bonuses for applying unethical pressure against people who are already under pressure from circumstances beyond their control.

Debtors should learn about bankruptcy filing and seriously consider it. If appropriate for you that may get rid of these slimebags once and for all.

Yea, but debt collectors make their living by harassing people until they pay. It's not just the people who owe money -- money that's not owed to them, mind you -- but anyone who may be in contact with that person.

Look around and you'll find numerous instances of debt collectors harassing people who don't even know the person they're looking for. It happens to me all the time.

I don't blame them for taking the job, since they probably needed the money, but they're paid to be jerks to people. I know because I worked for one, although not as a "debt collector". They're not all jerks in real life, but those that aren't usually hate their miserable jobs. Those that are jerks are just miserable people who probably couldn't get a job anywhere else.

Debt collectors are only doing a job...it is not their rules; they are only trying to obtain a paycheck like everyone else.  I too do not like calls on Sunday night, but I do not blame the person on the other end.  If they are calling I am late on something, so first and foremost I am at fault.  Then we can begin to lay blame at the company itself for their bad practices.

I agree, I got a voicemail left by them this morning on a cell phone I never registered to any account, they left no details but said they were a debt collection company. Gave me a non-working extension, and the person who did answer couldn't look me up by name in the database and asked for my full social security number instead. Very, very unprofessional, even though the person who answered was as helpful as he could be given the circumstances.

I was a collections agent for awhile and that has to be the worst job in the world. They are all trying to rip you off especial NCO Financial. They harass you and try and bully money out of you. Also their research tactics also lacking. They constantly tell me that I have bank accounts and credit cards that do not exist. Well if I did have all the money they claim that I have then I could make a payment. I have already begun the legal process against this company for harassment at work, they had the nerve to threaten my co-worker because apparently she was helping me avoid them.

Keep getting calls from this number at work. They left a message with the receptionist (acn you believe it!) saying that they had a judgement against me and that i had to call them asap. How embarassing! Looks like NCO. The girl was reading a script. Terrible that people could do this and it be legal.... maybe it's not. Anyone know? Leaving personal details with another party HAS to violate your privacy rights, correct?

Make sure you answer the phone calls. Collection agencies and collectors have to follow what is called the FDCPA or Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. If they break the rules you can go after them for a monetary settlement. There are attorneys across the country who do this kind of work. Make sure you document EVERYTHING and just stay calm and let them run their mouths.

HEY SCUMBAG TELL YOUR VICTIMS THIS THEIR RIGHTS ARE NOT PROTECTED IF THEY TALK TO YOU ON THE PHONE.  SO THOSE OF YOU WHO GET THESE CALLS TELL THEM ONCE... PUT IT IN WRITING AND STOP CALLING.  IF THEY CONTINUE TO CALL HANG UP WITH OUT SPEAKING TO THEM  THEY EVENTUALLY QUIT.
