I just received a voicemail from this company telling me I have been approved for a loan up to $10,000. I've never applied for a loan nor do I want one form "Mike" that can barely speak english. I've had the Scam calls before, it's fun to just pick up and leave the phone on the table and walk away you can actually hear them yelling from across the room. Do it every time they call and eventually they will stop haha

I just received a call from this number claiming they were calling from CitiBank and my $10,000 personal loan was approved.  Told him I have never applied for a personal loan, he said it was applied 22 days ago and how would I like to have it processessed.  Told him I didnt want the loan and to cancel it. He hung up. When I call the number back, a foreign man answered saying citibank, when I questioned about how the loan was applied for, he hung up on me again. 916-234-9454

I have gotten two calls from this number stating they are Citibank. The man identified himself as Peter Smith. I applied for a payday loan and have gotten several different calls from a lot of different numbers. I even got myself duped out of 100.00 for a so called fee for one of these loans. It was my stupidity. I have even gotten a call from a different number with the attorney and arrest line that these people have apparently given to others. To top it all off, they are even using an 800 number that is actually western unions number to solicit so called charges to accept a loan. Taxes or something like that. I have changed banks put security alerts on my credit. All of the people who call me have thick foreign accents and could very well be from India. Their names are always American like Steve Brown, Sean Walker, Robert Burtell, etc. I never heard of VOIP but anything is possible. Greendot Moneyback has posted a scam alert on solicitors of loans and advises not to use a moneypak for any of these types of solicitations. They prefer the untraceable forms like this so they can rip you off. Do not fall prey to it. and they use the attorney scare tactic to intimidate. There are always lots of people in the background and they use female as well as male callers. So BEWARE!

I got the Citibank calls too. I called back & asked him a series of questions. He told me that I had applied for the loan the day before. Then when I told him that I hadn't applied for any loans & was not interested. And since I did not authorize the loan, nothing better come up on my credit. He started to berate me & said why am I calling him and threatening him. That his number is for people who calls in for money. So why I am calling for money and then threatening him, and then proceeded to tell me that I was rude...when he was the one yelling at me! What scared me the most was that he rattled off my home address even though I gave him a false first name. I had moved a year ago & never changed my address....so the current home address he rattled off isn't "public".

This number has called me 5 times this morning, saying they are citibank, and that my loan was approved. It was a man with a foreign accent. I have never applied for a loan either. When I called back, he hung up on me when I said no, i do not want a loan!! And they are using my maiden name too. I blocked the number from my phone, somehow they are still leaving voicemails, I got 5 voicemails in 3 hours. And now I just received a text message from my OWN number with this number in it!!! stop them please!!! It's really annoying!!

A man with an accent called and left a voicemail message on my cell phone.  He stated that his name was Derrick Johnson and that he worked at Citibank.  He congratulated me by telling me that I was approved for a $10,000.00 loan.  I did not apply for a loan with Citibank.  This is indeed a SCAM!!!  I wish this man and others like him would make better use of their time and stop calling me. The callers are scammers.  Don't be deceived and don't offer them any information.

It is very scary that these people have information like social, address, place of work info...etc, however, it is a SCAM!!! I have gone as far as speaking to a division of the FBI who told me exactly what the caller said, etc before I told him anything. DO NOT give them any info. I have been instructed to disregard all calls...which I do. Call after call does get annoying but I try to ignore them.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

Read this investigative report ABC News did on this scam:

Hundreds of thousands of cash-strapped Americans have been targeted by abusive debt collectors operating out of overseas call centers suspected of links to organized crime in India, law enforcement officials told ABC News.

The calls are part of a massive scam, one that appears to target struggling Americans -- especially those who have gone online to apply for payday loans. Armed with personal information from those pilfered applications, the threatening callers, who claim to be debt collectors poised to initiate legal action, have managed to pry loose millions of dollars from their victims -- even when the victims never owed money in the first place.

"This is what we call a phantom debt collection scam," said Jon Leibowitz, the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission. "It's a very pernicious and innovative new fraud."

Working through call centers in India, the commission estimates that the criminals have dialed at least 2.5 million calls, persuading already cash-strapped victims to send them more than $5 million. Some have reported receiving dozens of calls per hour. They are victims like Cindy Gervais, of New Orleans, who went online for a quick loan when her husband's car was hit by a driver who didn't have insurance.

Even though she paid the loan off, the so-called "phantom" debt collectors with Indian accents began calling to say she still owed money.

"He more or less told me that if I didn't pay, they were going to have someone on my doorstep to arrest me," she told ABC News. "And that they were going to contact my place of business, and tell them what kind of person I am."

At first, she said she resisted. Then the calls became more frequent, and started to ring on her cell phone, and at the grocery distribution company where she had worked for 27 years.

"I was more or less in panic mode because he told me there would be someone before noon at my place of business to arrest me and take me to jail," she said tearfully. "So I agreed to pay him."

After receiving scores of complaints, investigators with the FTC said they began tracking the calls, and following the payments. They alleged the payments led them to a California company run by an Indian-American named Kirit Patel, and that such scams would not be possible without American front men.

"I would say that all roads of this scam, or many of the roads of this scam, lead back to Mr. Patel," said the FTC's Leibowitz.

ABC News tracked Patel for weeks, from the suburbs of San Francisco to Austin, Texas.

Patel refused to talk. But his lawyer, Mark Ellis, said he believes it is far too early to pass judgment on his client. Ellis, a Sacramento-based attorney, told ABC News that Patel was hired for a nominal fee to set up an American shell company, and had no idea what the call centers in India were doing.

"I can tell you, he was as snookered by the people in India as anybody," Ellis said. "He's a 69-year-old man who is nearing his retirement who thought all he had to do was set up some corporations and everything was on the up and up. He's completely dismayed that he has become the lightning rod of this entire problem."

A close friend of Patel's also defended him in a brief interview at his home, saying Patel was not trying to defraud anyone -- he was just an unwitting, bit player in a larger scheme.

I started to receive calls 3 days ago from various numbers. some as early as 6:30 A.M on Saturday and up til 10:00 P.M.. I did a reverse number search and found that the area code numbers weren't valid prefixes in the US. They apparently roll the telephone numbers to numbers that can make it look like they are in country. I finally answered a call  to try to put an end to the frustration. The individual tried to be very forceful and represented himself to be an attorney. I asked him the nature of his call, and he said he was not authorized to discuss( He's an "attorney" and can't discuss. He used all of the techniques stated in the posts above, including telling me the police were going to arrest me tonight. I said can you send them sooner. I also thanked him for staying on the line long enough for me to be able to track his call and named a few cities in his area I found were where the calls originated, he then hung up and attempted to re-call me to harass. I called my local police dept. and they were unable to help, but advised me to file complaint with state attorney.

I was called at work.  They told me that I had a lawsuit pending and there were charges.  I asked them, is it a lawsuit or charges filed against me?  I told them they were lacking professionalism and they are not allowed to call me at work.  If anything, someone from the law enforcement office would come physically to where I am at and take me into custody.  Anyway, long story short, I called them back a couple times to get information.  They called me at work and threatened me to never call them back.  I smiled to myself and said, "OOOKKey DOkie"..  These people do not realize that they called a military base with lines that are monitored all the time.

SCAM!!!  They stole info from anyone who looked into a payday or personal loan then use that info to try and scare people into paying for a "customer service charge" to cover the cost of processing the loan info.  They do not have the power to arrest you! Also for a financial charge you are summoned to appear in court, not jail. Guys are frauds!
