There are at least two variations to this scam:
1. The check is phony, but the bank does not notify you until after you shipped the item.
2. The check is written for more than the asking amount. You are instructed to send a MoneyGram for the difference. In this variation, the scammer does not care about the item. All they want is to get the MoneyGram before you learn the check bounced.
So, instead of cashing the check, file a Mail Fraud Complaint!

Craigslist scam - wanted to buy a bedroom set without seeing it - was told that i would receive a check via courier and then 'her' movers would pick up the bed for her father - didn't sound right to me so I asked more questions and whoever this is kept it going for a while until I just stopped responding. The language on the text was 'broken' and the person kept saying they were were a 'busy lady' and that's why she couldn't come see the bed herself as she had a 'contract' to leave the next day ....
