I received a phone call from 949-209-0922 that was a call with no one on the other end.  I looked it up and it appears to be a home mortgage company.  I do not want calls from this number.

We have been receiving about a call a day from this number - I let it go to the answering machine but they won't leave a message. When I have attempted to dial the number that shows on my called id I get a message that my call cannot be completed as dialed.

1-949-209-0922. This phone number listed on the caller ID as from "Newport BCH" Newport Beach CA.
I found that this number is owned by the telephone company "Pac - West Telecomm, Inc" and have gone to the website to make a complaint about receiving multiple calls from this number with no messages being left and have asked this telephone company to tell the "Unknown" owner of the phone number to stop calling me as it is a constant harassment and feel it is the responsibility of the phone company to make sure the numbers they issue are not being abused.
I hope other who are receiving these calls by this number consider doing the same until this senseless calling stops.

My daughter told them not to call our  number again or we will report it as harassment.   I now have them calling on the cell phone, something has to be done apparently the" Do not call list " for home and cell phones is no longer any good.  There has to be some legal way to put a stop to this.   For all the money we pay for home/cell phone service , maybe the carriers of these services should try and find a way to help its customers. !!!!

A person called me from the number 949-209-0922 and said that my computer has been sending them error messages and wanted me to get on the computer and he would help me get rid of the malicious logic that I must have downloaded from the internet.

The caller sounded like he was calling from a call center in India, but said he was from California.
I was going to transfer me to his technical department to get information in my computer to try and decide what was the next step.

This is a scam.  I am on the national do-not-call list.  Legitimate companies honor the list and don't use robo-dialers, but criminals use robo-dialers and ignore the list.

Their robo-dialer leaves a pre-recorded message on my answering machine about reducing my mortgage interest rates and getting up to a 125% loan-to-value (LOL!).  The message is targeted at a live human (apparently their robo-dialer isn't smart enough to tell that its an answering machine).  The message repeatedly and emphatically encourages you ("limited time offer", etc.) to press 1 to talk to a representative ... then it mentions "to remove yourself from this calling list, please press 2".

DO NOT EVER press '1' or '2' or talk to them at all (even to ask them to stop calling you).  Since they are criminals, acknowledging that you are a live human will only get your number added to a 'live person' list and result in even more calls.

If you want to do something about calls like this, report them to your phone company and the FTC:

FYI, the other scams I mentioned had messages about reducing credit card interest rates.  I talked to an FTC representative about them, and he told me that the criminals were phishing for peoples' credit card numbers.  He also told me that the FTC was trying hard to shut them down, but wasn't able to trace the calls.

My best guess about this new scam is that they are phishing for social security numbers, bank account information, and/or credit card numbers (for instance, asking you to provide a credit card for a small loan processing fee, etc.)

This is a scam.  It has all of the tell-tale signs of similar scams I have been targeted by lately.

If you want to do something about calls like this, follow anonymous's advice (above) and report them to the FTC, FCC, etc.  Since many of these criminals fake their caller ID, they may be hard to locate, ... but at least complaining will get your voice counted so that things like the "truth in caller ID" act might get more support.

If you aren't yet familiar with caller ID spoofing or the truth in caller ID act, see this wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing

I am somewhat puzzled that other people were able to call the number back, but it is entirely possible that the criminals chose the number of a legitimate business (Fannie Mae) to spoof.

Fannie does *NOT* call up random homeowners and offer them rate reductions. THIS IS A SCAM. This is a version of the advance-fee-for-something scam where something is a grant, loan, scammed-money refund, lottery winnings, interest rate reduction, tax reduction, gift card, refund, doggie, cruise, vacation, free gas, etc., and the advance-fee is for tax, shipping, registration, insurance, secure handling, processing, etc. They may send you a fake check, may want your credit/debit card or bank account number, or tell you to wire cash via Western Union, Moneygram, etc. They can put recurrent difficult-to-cancel monthly charges or a 1-time charge on your card or bank account, and sell account info to other criminals and you'll have to replace accounts altogether. Wired-cash is irretrievable - once it's picked up at the other end, it's untraceable and gone. If they want you to call them up for instructions, they may tell you not to discuss the wire with Western Union desk clerks but the real reason is WU clerks are familiar with these scams and will warn you not to wire the money. Report to US Postal Service Inspectors https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/forms/MailFraudComplaint.aspx , the Federal Communications Commission http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm , the Federal Trade Commission https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ and your state AG, as appropriate.

Funny - I was just checking the log of missed calls on my home line and I see this number called me 37 times in three days at the end of June. THIRTY-SEVEN. Thirteen of those calls came in a four-minute span on June 30.

Blocked, but I think I'm going to fill out the FCC form on these guys. If I'd been home, I would've ignored the calls, but I would have had to listen to it ring and ring and ring.
