they claimed they called from american express, but they are absolutely not AE, they will tell you how much is due and try to get u to pay over the phone. i then called back too AE, the 1800 no. they said i owe nothing, i paid off my balance. so people please never ever listen to the 973 no. and pay over the phone. they are not REAL AE!

I just called the number after reading all your warnings...the voice over said to give them my credit card number..of course i didn't and I waited for a human voice...I told him to go "F himself" he kept saying Mam listen...I said american express would not call and leave a voice mail telling the customer to give them their credit card number.

Only when you initiate a call to the real AE on your own should you give your credit card number.

Everyone should call this guy and tell him they hope Karma gets him. He's probably so stupid he thinks Karma is a woman or something

Disgusting low life people without a conscience.

Just got a call from this number without leaving a voicemail, it's somewhere from Newark, NJ.
This scam must be continuously profitable otherwise why would someone bother keep doing this.

I just hope everyone be careful by not giving out your information over the phone easily.

You're right.  The funny part is that I was two days late on my payment and they started calling immmediately and declined any further charges on my card instantly. .  I guess half the nation is in the same boat! What happened to our bailout money?

They just called me again.  I talked to AMEX earlier and they said there was nothing that would raise a flag on my account.  Also, the number they are calling isn't linked to my account.  Talked to the fraud department about all the AMEX calls I've been receiving lately from all the different numbers.  The guy seem pretty indifferent.  I asked if he wanted the numbers and he seemed kind of puzzled as to why I would want to give them to him.  Oh well, I guess trying to do the right thing isn't supposed to be easy.

Missed call from 973-710-5045 so they left a voice mail.  They claim to be from AMEX calling about a very important matter.  I'm supposed to call them back at 800-678-0738 and have my account number in hand.

Odd thing is that earlier in the day, I was getting calls from 623-492-6031, which I did not accept, and according to 800notes, this is also purportedly an AMEX call.

Probably a scam of some sort.

Why is it that in the two threads I searched, most everyone concludes it's a scam, but there are always one or two comments that say the call is legitimate?  Are they planted comments?

This number is valid. It is truly American Express COLLECTIONS. They did ask me for my acct # and when I refused to give it they asked for SS which I also refused. They were more than happy to access account with my name and address. It is legit.

Been receiving calls from 973-710-5045 for the last 5 days consistently in the morning and the evenings. Sometimes they would leave a voicemail and sometimes not. Guy's voice would say, This is an urgent business matter and to call back. I decided to call back and some lady answered very kindly. I told her I don't have an AmEx and she asked for my number and just said my number would be removed within 48 hours. Definitely a SCAM!

I got this call as well. (973) 710-5045 had American Express on my caller ID. THIS IS A SCAM!!! THIS IS A SCAM!! Credit card companies or any legitimate company will never call you asking for your account info or any personal info. I even opted out from phone calls from AmEx so it shouldn't be them. There are ways now to disguise your caller ID info to make it say anything you want. This is what this scammer is doing. DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER BACK. Credit card companies don't use scare tactics as well saying "there is a urgent message" like this caller did. Credit card companies will just put a block on your card if unusual activity is detected and just wait for you to contact them. REPORT THIS NUMBER TO THE PROPER AUTHORITIES LIKE THE FCC.

Received 4 calls yesterday and last night and a message on my home phone to immediately call back before the end of the day. They stated they were from American Express and after reading these, I won't be answering. I'm not sure how it works but what I don't understand is how the telephone company allows "American Expres" to come up on the caller ID for this phone number if it's a scam company. Anyone have any ideas?

Call shows on caller ID as "American Express" Got a recording male with slight accent requesting my husband/son (?) (both share same name) to call 800-230-1284 and have AXEX account info ready.  MY husband and I do not have an AMEX, my son has been victim of ID theft before and someone could have started another account using our names but after reading these posts I'm gonna ignore it.

OK so I called the number and spoke to someone with a southern accent.  He also cited the 800# listed above.  It legitimately sounded like American Express.  He said they are making calls with current/former customers to reconnect.
In any event - if you do not feel comfortable - call the 800# on your card and they can tell you if someone called you

Call from 973-710-5045 was received early today 2/4/09 leaving message claiming to be AmEx (caller ID said American Express) and aggressive sounding man left a message to call: 800-678-0738. This number is also cited on 800notes.com as a scam number.
Then later tonight, caller ID indicated a call from 623-492-6031, but the ID that normally said a name said 602-537-9012. No message was left.
All 3 numbers show up as scams, and common sense says ONLY CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD, OR BILLING STATEMENT.
SCAM SCAM SCAM. Anyone who posts to this site claiming to be from the company or have spoken to AmEx and verified is either in on the scam, or some lowlife lying for fun hoping to mess with people.

I got the same message supposedly from American Express.  DO NOT CALL BACK!  From the AMEX website:

? Never release your card number, card identification number, PIN, or password to an unknown party. (Note: American Express will not request any of this information if we are calling you - we may only request this information if you are calling us. Beware of parties contacting you and requesting this information).
