Abc-what kind of phone does your fiancee have? If it's an Android, IPhone or Blackberry you can do a Google search on how to block calls. You could also set up a free Google Voice account that would redirect the call to another number while sending the caller a message that her phone is out of service. Instructions are available online for that as well. A third option would be to call her service provider to have the call blocked.

That's all I can think of. I hope it helps!

Got my first cell call from 978-000-000. I got a new number last month because I'd inherited a number that was a collection agency for a college loan organization. Since only 3 people have my cell number, suspect this might be from the previous number, and of course that's the reason I got rid of that one. I didn't answer it but am grateful to the poster who knew what it is. No reason for any collection agency to be calling me, that is for certain.

Guess I'll put the ringer back on silent.

Bass Hound,

It is NOT the Federal Government tapping anyone's line, and if you knew anything about telephony you would realize how ridiculous your claim is.  Believe me, the old days of being able to tell if a "G-MAN" is tapping your line are long gone.  It isn't being done with a pair of alligator clips and a reel-to-reel wire recorder anymore, you know.

Anytime you see a number like 000-0000, or 222-2222, etc., you can pretty well figure that it is either a scammer or a collection agency breaking the law (AGAIN).  Anyone with the least knowledge of how the telephone system works can change their caller ID to anything that they like - even to your caller ID !  Those who wish not to be traced tend to change it to things like 000-000-0000 or other things like that.  My favorite prank to play on technically oriented friends is to call them with their own number as my caller ID, which then causes the CNAM lookup to reflect their name as the caller.  I get some very puzzled and cautious sounding "...hello ???" responses.

There is a way to protect against all but the more sophisticated CID scammers, and that is to get a toll free number with ANI service.  It does not depend on the caller ID info.  Even that can be fudged however, and I have a line which not only displays "555-555-5555" as the CID, but it causes ANI to believe the call originated from a number in another country.  (I am not a phone scammer - I use this line in hunting phone scammers).  It would never fool anyone with governmental resources, but when you are screwing with the Nigerian scammers just to ruin their day, it works great.  I also have an inbound number with ANI, so I am not easily fooled.

So, Bass Hound, you can go back to tending your "garden" out near the lake in the National Forest, without worrying that the strange caller ID you saw means that Uncle Sam is on to you.  He probably is, but the caller ID was not a clue.  If you are wondering how I know about your little side business, well, just keep wondering.

Incidentally, web sites are routinely harvested and their content scanned.  You might want to go to EFF. ORG to learn more.

Don't let the "boyfriend" comment bother you.  Collection agents, tele-scammers, etc., will say anything to put you off balance or provoke a reaction.  It is very common for them to say outrageous things like you experienced.

Once I took a call (at my place of business) from a penny stock salesman/con artist who quickly became abusive when I said I wasn't interested.  I hung up.

Moments later the phone began to ring, and I knew it had to be this same joker, so I let my unsuspecting business partner answer the phone.  Sure enough, when they picked up, the caller yelled "F... You!" and slammed down the phone.  My partner couldn't understand why I was in the next room LMAO.

Have received numerous calls with Caller ID of 978-000-0000 with pre-recorded message to "lower your interest rates on Credit Cards" and instructions ot press "9" if you want to speak to a "representative." I pressed just to get rid of these pests and stress my "no-call" status, which apparently means nothing. A guy on the other end told me it was "CardMemberServices." I told him to cease the calls as I was on the National No-Call List, and he proceeded to be extremely crude and rude and said he did not have to stop calling. I told him I knew where he was and he said I was a liar, that "nobody can find us."

It is the Federal Gov. and they are in the process of line tapping due to whatever reasons, could be something you said such as a buzz word that triggered a wire tap those words are part of the Patroit Act. It's also  or possible it has nothing to do with you and someone you know is connected to their investigation, either way it's the Feds and everything you say from that call on is recorded if your breaking the law time to be real careful,  if not then forget it!

We have been receiving calls from this number the past week.  Today, Sunday, we have already been called 6 times.  They never speak and usually hang up after a few minutes. Today no one hung up - I could hear people talking in the background like they were on another line.

Received about a dozen of these calls over the weekend. No messages were left on my machine and most of the time when I answered I heard nothing on the other end.  I just answered yet another call from that number and the woman on the other end identified the organization as the "League of Conservation Voters" and wanted to know if I was voting for certain candidates within Massachusetts.
