I received a call from this company at my job yesterday around 4:00p.m. The man on the phone said his name was "James Washington" I found this hard to believe because he was obviously extremely foreign, and the name didnt seem to suit him. He tried telling me I had unpaid loans and that the police would come to my place of employment and arrest me, that I would be blacklisted, loose my job and be unable to work in the US for 7 years. Needless to say, it scared me pretty bad, but I have now learned that it was all a scam. They even went as far as having a woman call my work posing as a police officer from the city I reside in. It was unreal. They get nasty with you when you question them and they will do/say anything to try and get you to give them money. These people are sick. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY. Drill them with questions and they fall apart. PLEASE report them so we can put an end to this. It's terrible that people out there can do such a thing. I changed my telephone number today so they could not contact my cell, and right around 4p.m today (oodly right around the exact same time i was contacted yesterday) a woman called my work saying she was a police officer. I alerted my entire staff of this situation earlier today, so my employee began drilling her with questions, and the woman just hung up on her and no one has called since. I also dealt with a man named "John McIntyre" who claimed to be an attorney and wanted to charge me almost $1500 to "settle this out of court". Please, don't fall for this like I did.

I just got a call from one of these idiots and she threatened me with going to jail for not paying a bill which isn't even mine.  I told her to stop calling me and she told me she was coming to collect the money.  I told her to come here and I would slit her throat from ear to ear and dumb her disgusting hindu body in the swamps of the meadowlands where even the snapping turtles wouldn't want to eat her.  She asked me if I was threatening her and I said "absolutely, bi***! Bring it on!!"  I'm so sick of these idiot people and I am filing a report with the police, the fbi, the ftc and anyone else I can think of.  I doubt she'll do the same.

Received a call from this number on my cell and at work.  Gentlemen with very heavy Indian accent named "Jack Snyder" telling me that I have a pending lawsuit being filed against me and my social security number.  I advised him that I am fully aware that this is not true and that they are to never ever contact me again.  (That was when he called my work and I answered the line), the message he left moments before on my cell was basically telling me to either contact him immediately or have my attorney of record contact him.  If I failed to do so in a timely manner, he wishes me the best of luck.....the entire time on the message and when I spoke with him, you could hear all of the other telemarketer/scam artists in the back ground!!!

I came into work this morning with a threating call on my voice mail telling me not to ignore this call. Well considering they called my work and I didn't get arrested over the weekend I'm not losing sleep over it. The guy who obivoulsy is not american used the name of Adam Miller and left the same number of 985-718-0633 which every one has been stating on here. I think I will use Samantha's approach in this matter as i don't want them calling a continusly harrassing me at work. Funny thing is I work with collections and we never threaten our customers like that no matter what.

Section 809 of the FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf requires 3rd-party debt collectors to give debtors written notice of debt (the key word is *shall*) :
"§ 809. Validation of debts
(a) Within five days after the initial communication with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt, a debt collector shall, unless the following information is contained in the initial communication or the consumer has paid the debt, send the consumer a written notice containing?
(1) the amount of the debt;
(2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;
(3) a statement that unless the consumer, within thirty days after receipt of the notice, disputes the validity of the debt, or any portion thereof, the debt will be assumed to be valid by the debt collector;
(4) a statement that if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, the debt collector will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer by the debt collector; and
(5) a statement that, upon the consumer?s written request within the thirty-day period, the debt collector will provide the consumer with the name and address of the original creditor, if different from the current creditor."

A Collection Agent May Not?

Here are the top 11 actions prohibited by the The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

Misrepresent Him or Herself

  A debt collector may not misrepresent himself as an attorney or law enforcement officer.

Use the Telephone to Annoy or Harass

  A collection agent may not cause a telephone to ring or engage any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with an intent to annoy, abuse, or harass anyone at the called number.

Threaten Arrest or Lawsuit

  A collection agent may not threaten a consumer with arrest. It may not threaten legal action that is either not permitted or not actually contemplated. In other words, a the threat of a lawsuit may be an empty one.

Use Abusive or Threatening Language

  A debt collector may no use abusive or profane language in the course of communication related to the debt.

Publish a Bad Debt List

  Publishing the consumer?s name or address on a "bad debt" list is prohibited.

Contact By Embarrassing Media

  A debt collector may not communicate with a consumer by post card. It may not use any language or symbol, other than the debt collector?s address, on any envelope when communicating with a consumer by use of the mails or by telegram. A debt collector may use its business name if such name does not indicate it is in the debt collection business.

Contact a Consumer at Work

  A collection agent may not communicate with consumers at their place of employment after being told this is unacceptable or prohibited by the employer.

Seek Unjustifiable Amounts

  A debt collector may not demand any amounts not permitted under an applicable contract or as provided under law.

Contact a Consumer Represented by an Attorney

  A collection agent may not contact a consumer after it learns the consumer is represented by a lawyer.

Communicate With a Consumer After Receiving a Validation Request

Communicate With Third Parties

  A debt collector may not reveal or discuss the nature of a consumer?s debts with third parties other than the consumer?s spouse or attorney. A collection agent may contact neighbors or co-workers only to obtain location information. It may contact a third party again if it has reason to believe the information the party provided previously is false.

Bills.com FDCPA FAQ

Below are questions Bills.com readers ask frequently:

Can a Collection Agent Call My Cell Phone?

  Yes. However, if you tell the debt collector it may not use that number because it is a cell phone, it may not contact you again at that number.

I Keep Receiving Dozens of Calls From Collection Agents. Is That Legal?

  No. Unscrupulous collection agents will use "block parties" or "office parties" where they contact a consumer, multiple neighbors, or co-workers telling them they need to reach the consumer on an urgent matter. This is not permitted under the FDCPA.

A Collector Says I Will Be Arrested if I Do Not Pay

  This was a true statement before the US Civil War, but has not been true since. People may be arrested if an aggressive judge files a bench warrant for a person who does not appear at a hearing relating to a lawsuit regarding a debt. However, in that case, the offense is the failure to respond to a court order, and not the existence of the debt. As stated above, it is illegal under the FDCPA to threaten a consumer with arrest if the consumer does not pay the debt.

He said something about committing a crime and fraud and coming to my job and arresting me so I would loose my job and he also said that I shouldn't leave the country. He said all this crap is under my social security number and I didn't know what to say and just asked me what I plan to do about it. I didn't know what to say but just said I will go fight it out in court and the guy said I wish you and your atterney good luck

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:

These people called me at work and told me I would be arrested at my place of employment if I didn't pay them 821.59 within 2 hours. An hour later, another person called saying they were from my hometown police department and had received a call about a subpeona from this same company, to arrest me. I asked the lady for the phone number she was calling from so I could call her right back. Thing is, my little town no longer has a police department, and the number she gave is their old number that has been disconnected for 2 years. Complete scam! I am now going on break to call the FBI Computer Fraud Division.

I was contacted by this man at my work . I finally gave in and called him back after work. His name was Mike Handerson from a law firm. He told me that I had a lawsuit against me. and I either needed to settle it within the next 24 hrs. or there would be a warrant for my arrest. I told him I would call him back. called him back and asked if I could split it in half. Half this week and the other half next week. He said sure. then asked me for my zip code to find a place in my area to make the payment. He was very pushy. Told me to go to Home Depot. I guess to get a money gram. Couldn't really understand due to his strong Asian accent. Home Depot, I said to him, that's a home improvement store. He said yes. Her wanted to know how long it would take me . he never called me back. We blocked the number on my phone. Don't know who to contact about this.

No they cannot.  The threats they made are all violations of federal law (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act). but since there is a very good chance they are calling from outside the US, there is not much hope of going afer them.  I would bet they cannot even produce a proper "Debt Validation Notification" letter as required by law if you request one.  If you have an old, unpaid loan or other debt, you would need to check the statute of limitations on suing to collect in your state as that is the most they can do if the debt is not time barred.
