I received a call today also and when I called teh CBA they couldn't explain why I was getting a call as I hadn't banked with them in 7 years.  I;m glad I didn't give my details out.  Total mystery

Everday I get a phone call from an unknown number.
They don't listen as to how I answer a call, as I say hello, Sylvia speaking and then they ask for Sylvia, huh....
Then they ask for my details to confirm who they are talking to, seriously. I won't give my details out over the phone.
If it is legit, then send a letter.

I also received a call from this number and the first thing they ask for is your full name, DOB and address. Of course without telling you what it is about, which seems highly suspicious. I then rang CBA directly and turned out one of my loan payments hadn't gone through properly.
Still, always best to be cautious, as you can just call the bank or company directly..

I had a call like that today, and i thought it was a scam, but I knew the bank do ask for those details.

It doesn't hurt to ring up the bank straight away to verify if they did in fact call you. As I did & lucky for  me they did verify that in fact they did make that call.

If in doubt ALLWAYS do somthing about it :)

Got a Private Number call reporting to be Comm Bank and asking for my details. Sounded like an international call but an Aussie female. I refused and asked why they were ringing on a Saturday. They said they needed to talk to me urgently. I asked where she was ringing from and for their number so I could call them back. She said Parramatta Head Office and gave the 1300 number and plus the correct 132221. I rang 132221 and was advised that the Parramatta office was closed.

how many times can people on a private number who claim their from the commonwealth bank and will not give any details other than a first name,( IE. gus from the commonwealth bank) call and request your personal details (IE. full name, address and date of birth) before it is classed as harassment.i have asked person on phone to put it in writing and send it to me. 22 days straight have got phone call for a personal banking matter that requires full identity details, but not 1 letter. are they unable to write or just plain stupid. the bank says do not disclose this information unless i have rung bank. is the staff of the commonwealth bank aware of this or as i said earlier, are they stupid or just ignorant of this process.

It is definitely Commonwealth Bank card services... but I NEVER give out this info to someone that has called me, then I know I can never fall for a phishing scam... I just say thanks for calling, I'm not comfortable giving these details to a caller, I'm going to call the bank myself right now :) And if I forget, then they call me again hehe

It is actually CBA that is calling you. Check your net bank. You must have a payment outstanding on your credit card or are over your limit. Reason for the call is when you go over your limit or miss a payment the card gets a temporary block on it so it is a courtesy call to let you know what is going on and saves you the embarrassment of buying something and having your card get rejected.

But you could always go to a branch and they will be able to let you know the purpose of the call or ring their direct baking number to confirm if it was a legit call. Or just disregard it and get charged late fees.

I got two calls one an Aussie sounding girl and later an Aussie sounding bloke. Start by asking if they are speaking to Peter. Then wanting my details before disclosing mystery business they want to discuss with me. I smelt a rat. They gave me the 1300130107 number "the head office" for confirmation. I bet they were not calling from this number.  I missed a call which I think was from them. But my mobile registered no calling number.  The scary thing is they know both numbers ;mobile and home phone.

When Nick calls his bank, he can safely give out personal info because he knows he's talking to his bank. When a stranger calls Nick, Nick must NEVER give out any info because his caller could be a lying scammer purporting to be his bank. You are a lying scammer shill.

It is indeed. If it was from bank, tell them to send you a letter in writing or visit their branch or call your bank directly. But don't disclose your address or DOB for a complete stranger. I was asked my DOB and address as well but when I asked the DOB of the person calling me, she refused. She only wanted my information but wasn't ready to provide hers. Guys don't be scared or bullied by any comments above. Nobody in the world can take a legal action for refusing a phone call unless you are an emergency worker.

The number is Commonwealth Credit cards - they appear to not believe that the details sought breach the very privacy they are trying to protect.

My advice is refuse to disclose the details sought -

Hi Nick, you are completely incorrect. The bank does in fact ask for those details over the phone. Think about it, when you call in to customer service, they ask you to verify your details due to privacy laws in Australia as well as general banking policies. Although when you receive a call from someone who asks you to first identify yourself, you get all scared about the thought and are sure that a bank would NEVER do that, yeah right!

Keep fooling yourself Nick. Privacy is a major issue, especially when it comes to personal banking and although it is understood to be an ironic situation where they ask for you to confirm your details when there's no full-proof way to ensure that they are in fact calling from the bank, this will never change as there will always be laws and regulatory bodies monitoring banks to ensure that a benchmarked standard of security is upheld within each and every customer interaction.

Use your instincts and be smart. If you don't feel comfortable identifying yourself over the telephone, then don't, but if you do, then proceed. It's all up to you, but don't be surprised if you don't identify yourself and your account is cancelled or even has legal proceedings under way.

I just wanted to comment on how ignorant your statement was on advising that banks wouldn't ask for these details over the phone. You obviously haven't worked in a personal banking or personal services organisation before because even if it wasn't a bank and say it was an Insurance company calling to speak with you about a claim that you lodged over the internet, via the telephone or at a branch, they would first need to identify you to avoid releasing information to say, your siblings or a stranger who may just have happened to pick up your phone after a crazy night.

Please think about your comments before posting them Nick and don't try to act as if you know how banks work if you've never worked in one or confirmed your thoughts with banks themselves (and by confirming with banks, I don't mean branches, I mean calling into the customer service departments to ask about their security measures).

Got a call from somebody claiming to be from Commonwealth Bank to check on a  bank transaction.  The person who identified himself as Joseph  went on to ask me for my address and date of birth for "verification purposes".  Told him right away that these info can't be disclosed.

Folks beware. Banks won't ask for these details over the phone.  And keep such details off your social networking pages as well.

Not a call, but an SMS telling me my Commonwealth bank credit card is overdrawn, while I don't have any CommBank's credit card. So watch out guys... If you are not sure after receiving such SMS or calls, phone CommBank at 132221 to verify it (refer to www.commbank.com.au).
