I received a call today from 09999-100-10. Young man with Indian accent claimed he was from Microsoft Tech Support (apparently Microsoft are outsourcing their Tech services) and that my computer was infected with a virus that had disabled all my Windows services and applications.  I was immediately wary and tried to get more info from him, but he managed to convince me to allow him to connect remotely to my computer using an open source program called "Teamviewer". He ran me through my system event viewer log that had over 15000 events, most of which had occurred in the wee small hours of the day while my computer was idle and as far as I knew was not connected to the internet (I always disconnect when not in use).  Finally after about an hour of me being evasive and him telling me my computer would crash eventually (and it probably will....eventually) he advised me that my SSL Certificate needed to be renewed and I would be able to do this online through a form or website he would provide or link me to.  I would not need to give him my credit card details, all I needed to do was fill out the form.  That's when I told him he was full of s#*t and hung up.  Now I am pretty worried that I have given him enough time to secrete some malware, Trojan or easter-egg thingy which will completely stuff my system.

Thawte and Comodo are two completely seperate companies.  They each sell SSL but are in no way connected to each other.

Comodo may be an SSL provider; however, Comodo lacks strong authentication and business best practices, integrity, and ethics, to be considered a real legitimate CA. Be aware and careful of the unethical misleading lies told by Comodo sales representatives to steal business from legitimate CA?s. Comodo is a dirty dog.

I work for Comodo, we are a legitimate company.  We have offices world wide and offer internet security through SSL certificates.  Its not a scheme, we secure big companies like microsoft, johnson and johnson, makeawish.org, obamas website and many more.  Go to google trends and put our companies name in.

I have received several calls recently from this number and when I called back today it was indeed the Comodo Security Group.  I do not understand why they are calling me.  Don't even know what SSL is.

I just got a call from that number. The caller said he had called from Comodo, an SSL CA company. I was asked if I am responsible for [domainname].com and how much do I pay for the wildcard cert. I told them it's free because I don't need a commercial cert ATM. He said thank you and good bye. I guess they wanted to offer a cheaper alternative. Hope they won't call me again.

The Company is called COMODO and is a doirect competitor of Verisign and Network Solutions.
It appears that they are very aggressive in making you switch from your current SSL provider.
Here is a direct contact Jill Fox: 201-716-4761.

One of our clients who has an SSL certificate due to expire got this call. I called back, they verified the domain name and explained that they were from Comodo (not the company handling the old certificate.) So basically Comodo goes through WHOIS records and searches for certificates that are due to expire and solicits business. The person I talked to was however fairly clear that they were offering "a better deal" i.e. not pretending to be the current certification authority. However it took a while before they stated what company they were with (initially the call was answered with a non-descript "hello.")

"Tom" called and left a message from 201-716-4468 but listed his callback # as same but with -4771 at end. I knew he was bs'ing because the secure domain he cited, which I maintain, doesn't expire till late 2011.

The phone number belongs to Comodo Lltd who issue SSL certificates under the brand names Comodo, PositiveSSL, and InstantSSL.

We've never used any of their services or signed up for any of their mailing lists and yet we receive unsolicited sales calls from them.  Not only do we receive unsolicited sales calls but we are deluged with SPAM advertising emails from these clowns.  This weekend alone we received 31 SPAM emails advertising Comodo's SSL certificates.

As a result of their unsolicited telephone sales calls and mass spam I will never do business with them.  What I do plan to do is file complaints against them with the FTC (both for their violation of the do not call list and their spam emails), and complaints with the New Jersey State Attorney General and a sepate BBB complaint for each of the 31 spam emails I received.

The called claming to be a company called comado. Asked for the person in charge of network security reguarding and expiring SSL certificate. When questioned what certificate they were talking about and what it was used for they hung up.

From our security investigation it appears they are blind calling responsible parties for domains. When I called the number back they answered with no company name. When I asked what they did, they said they are a certificate authority. They claimed to be running a call center and that the "lead" information must have been in error. They denied knowing anything about the behavior of calling and hanging up when questioned, though it seems to be well documented on the web.

I just received a call from this same number regarding "renewing" our expiring SSL certificate. I let it go to voicemail like I do with most of my unsolicited calls, and it was full of alarmist words about our certificate expiring next month (I renewed it this morning actually).

Stick to your regular known companies for renewing your SSL certs and ignore these calls.

Received calls from Comodo (left no message) at 201-716-4468 and, another one claiming to be from Network Solutions where my website was registered (but NOT where my ssl was from so he got it wrong). The second call was from 77-627-9836. After saying he was from Network Solutions he said he was with Echofax or Equifax or something like this. Obviously these guys saw my ssl was due to expire eventually (when isn't one?) and try to scare me into giving info over to them for whatever reason. Even if this guy was comissioned by NS, which I highly doubt, he was rather dishonest in claiming to be "from" Network Solutions.
