Your AG sat on the complaint and did nothing, which is unfortunate but not uncommon. You're leaving money on the table if you don't find a valid mailing address and file suit yourself in 2012. You have up to a year from a given FDCPA violation, yours being the bogus lawsuit threat from the boiler room rep. You may still have time to sue whatever company hassled you in early 2011, assuming you've kept that recording and good records.

This number is for Commonwealth Financial Systems or "Commonwealth Investigations" as they like to refer to themselves. At this point I am unaware if they are scammers or legit  collection agency. Regardless, DO NOT FALL FOR THEIR TACTICS!!!!
They called me several times, and never left voicemails. They finally left one and I called the number that they left. They attempt to sound like a government agency and try very hard to scare you. Within the first 30 seconds of the conversation, they were threatening felony charges for "defrauding a financial institution" and said that charges were being filed with the local DA by 5pm if full restitution was not made. They wanted bank account information. At this point, I recited the following: "I am required by law to inform you at this point that this conversation is being recorded at the advice of my attorney. Please state your full name and job title, and the official name, address and phone number of the agency you are representing." I was told to do this by a real detective friend of mine. They immediately hung up.
I couldnt resist, so I called them back. The first gentlemen I spoke with was named Shawn White. When I called back, I asked for Shawn Jones. They connected me with the same person, who immediately hung up. Returned the call again and asked for Jack Johnson. And to my surprise, I was connected with "Shawn White." This time, Mr "White" informed me that if I called again that his agency would seek phone harassment charges against me! I simply said: "Sir, I would be happy to take care of this, if you would please give me the information that I am requesting." Again, he hung up.
I called back several times trying to get this information. Over the next several phone calls I was told they would be calling all my friends and neighbors and inform them I am a deadbeat. They threatened to have me fired, said that local police were on their way with warrant in hand. They also said they were contacting my local newspaper and news channels and that my face would be all over the news. They said I had 11 felony charges against me, and was facing 25 yrs in prison! They never did cooperate and give me the information I was requesting.
I have dealt with this sort of thing before. I am not sure if it was the same company or not. The first contact scared me severely. They also threatened felony charges and everything else. I did just as they asked and gave them the money. After the fact, I contacted the company that I did have the debt with. They informed me that no money had been applied to my account and that this company was not representing them. I filed a report with the local police and talked to the chief of police, prosecuting attorney and head sheriff. All of these people informed me that these were scare tactics. That even though the debt was related to a payday lender and my checking account, that it was not a criminal case. I just defaulted on a loan and it was entirely civil. Even if the company was legit, their threats were completely false and empty.
I sincerely hope anyone that is contacted by this company isnt fooled by their tactics. Its easy to be intimidated, trust me. But, dont buy it. These people are scum.

Someone left the following message on my land line:  "since you have not responded to our phone call your name and social security number will now be placed on the default list". I *67 back and asked them why they were calling me.  He asked me for my phone number and since they had already called me at that number, I gave it to him.

He came back on the line and told me they were looking for an acquaintance of mine who had "defrauded a financial institution."  I knew exactly who and why they were looking for this person. She had left the state owing me money, so I wasn't surprised that she had defrauded someone else.  She had given my name and phone number as a reference.  I explained that I had no way to get in touch with this person and would like for them to stop calling me.  He said they would take my name off her file (I doubt if that will happen).

This is the 4th time I have had someone call me looking for her.  I wish I knew where she was so I could pass along her contact information.....

I recieved a call from this group today.  They called from number 202-400-3496 and left a call back number 888-392-8605 on voicemail.  They said they are with Commonwealth.  I suspect this is a scam because I have perfect credit and never so much as a bounced check.

This is the message they left on my my cell phone.  It was hard to make out but this is as best I could tell:

Due to your unresponsiveness a formal complaint has been filed bearing your name and social security number.  To review all immediate right and details and avoid all check system or systant proceedings contact the Commonwealth immediately at 1-888-392-8605.

A voice mail was left at my parents house (haven't lived there for 34 years) and it said to call 888-392-8605 immediately.  I called and was routed to an individual I could hardly understand.  Was advised a suit was being filed and would I agree to a settlement. Who would agree to a settlement without any documentation?  It was for a payday loan from early 2009.  I was contacted by another company 6 or more months ago about the same thing, but after being threatened on the phone by them for 40 minutes I hung up.  I had recorded the call and sent a copy to our state attorney generals office.  When nothing happened after I figured it was all done.  I think my "file" just got sent to another bottom feeding collection agency.  To this date I have never received anything in the mail constituting proper documentation of any debt.

Caller id showed a call form District of Columbia, let it go to voice mail. Msg left was a cheap recording that stated "since you have not responded to our phone call your name and social security number will now be placed on the default list". Excuse me, to leave a voice mail threatening me with my social security number to be our on some list is in excusable. Your company is just corrupt. Like anyone would ever call you back. I will just check with my credit monitoring agency. Dont even pick up the phone if you get a call from this number or area. The msg didnt even list the companies name.

I paid Commonwealth Investigations $480 last month because they said I was facing criminal charges and bank account freeze. They just called me yesterday and said I had another case number and that I owe more money. They wouldn't give me an address or send me a bill when I requested it. I started to get suspicious, so I started researching their company. The BBB said they have had numerous people wanting information about this phone number. The only reason I believed it was ligit at first is because they had my old landlords phone number. They called him and said I was facing criminal charges because of a debt.

I think they have a great deal of my identity since they had my old landlords number. I only had to use his name and number when I applied for a payday loan, 3 years ago. I got the loan and paid it off (3 years ago).

Well, I gave these guys $480 last month. Luckily my bank debit card wouldn't go through, so I paid them with a pre paid green dot card from Walmart. I was confused because they had my old landlords phone number, that is how they got a hold of me. I had moved and changed my phone number. They just called me yesterday and said I owed another bill of $150. So I started doing some research, I called the BBB, Attorney general and googled their company name. They threatened me by freezing my bank account and said I will have to go to court. I asked them to send me a bill and asked them for their address. They told me they couldn't give me their address because of security reasons. They said they got my information from a Federal data base and they have thousands of names of people with these debts. I'm so pissed. I was trying to do the right thing by paying off a debt collector (so I thought). I'm going to my bank tomorrow to make sure they don't try to use my debit card again.

I just looked both numbers up on US search and neither one of those number are valid so you know it is a prepaid phone and a "SCAM". BEWARE DONT EVEN GIVE THEM YOUR NAME. ASK THEM IF YOU CALLED MY NUMBER THEN WHAT IS MY NAME AND THEY WILL HANG UP. CALL THE POLICE REPORT THEM SO WE CAN STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING AND REPORT THE NUMBER TO THE BBB. THEY WILL INVESTIGATE THESE PEOPLE ALONG WITH THE POLICE. THEY ARE USING A WASHINGTON DC AREA CODE......

Telemarketer
I had a call from this company for the first time today saying a was going to be arrested for a bad check and that I am being investigated, AND THAT I NEEDED TO CALL THEM BACK OTHERWISE I WAS GOING TO BE ARRESTED BY THE LOCAL POLICE. it was a recording telling me to call the 888-267-8555 the recording said the number was to some common wealth company that does not exist it is their number. I found out that anyone can get a 888 cell phone number. WHAT A SCAM  the first time I tried to call the number back it would not go through the second time it said I had reached austin white and that I needed to leave my number and case number and they would call me back within 24 hours. I have never ever written a check in my life and the call came in at 7:34pm which is weird so I called the fraud protection number on the back of my bank card and they told me my account was fine and to not respond to the call because they looked the number up in the computer and it was a telemarketing scam. to call the police if they called again. I don't have my voicemail set up so I don't have to deal with the voicemail like other people on here had to. It is a SCAM to get your SOCIAL SECURITY # and BANK info don't FALL for it. I called a friend of mine that works for the better business bureau and they also said it is a scam and that it is someones personal cell phone prepaid one at that.  PLEASE PLEASE DONT FALL FOR IT THEY WILL TRY TO CONVINCE YOU THAT THE ARE LEGAL AND LEGIT AND THEY ARE NOT.

So I called the toll free and talked to some one claiming to be with the "investigations dept common wealth" I gave him the number they called me at (a generic work line), he put me on hold, then came back and asked me if my name is "Jerome Jackson Jr"... I said no and he advised me that they are pursuing a criminal case for check fraud... Not sure why he felt it was ok to give a stranger information about legal action against Jerome Jackson Jr but that's how it played out. He told me he would place my number on the DNC list. I would advise not to bother calling this number and definatley DO NOT give these people any personal information... not even your name. ;)
