I TOO JUST RECEIVED A CALL FROM 202-499-1598 ON MY CELL, THEY SAID I WAS DUE $2000.00 REFUND AND TO CALL AND VERIFY. HOW DO THESE PEOPLE GET NUMBERS. I'M NOT CALLING THEM BACK, THEY SHOULD BE JAILED I CAN IMAGINE HOW MANY PEOPLE THEY HAVE SCAMMED.
I KNOW THE IRS DOESN'T CALL CELL PHONES THEY SEND OFFICIAL LETTERS, BESIDES THEY DON'T HAVE MY CELL NUMBER.

Received this call saying they were the IRS. Called the number and transfered me several times. Odd noise in the phone lines and then when they did pick up, you could hear telemarketing in the background and the man I was speaking with had broken english. So this is a major scam!

I recieved a voice mail message from this number.  I must admit a cool refund sounded very enticing!  When I call the number, the reception was of very poor quality and the guy I spoke to kept getting interrupted by musac.  It was very annoying.  When I asked the guy what type of information they were requesting, the line went dead.  I have yet to recieve a call back.  This is definitely a scam!

With the amount of personal/financial information the caller had, you should put a credit watch on right away. Also have the bank monitor your accounts.

Message left on my cell about being owed a refund. Caller back   was givthe person's name & ID#. He verified the last4 digits of my SS # & checking account.  Told me that I was owed over $ 2,173.00 but had to pay a penalty fee of $ 180.00 to have it put in my account within the next 2 hrs. Luckily I didn't fall for it.

If I were you, I would and have had to  quickly close out my bank account. It's a hassle, but better than them taking your money! You will need to go directly to the bank and close it down.

Couldn't help but notice that the IRS recommendations as to what to do if you think a call is bogus, doesn't even address the issue of what to do about a fraudulent call.   It only mentions  getting a call-back number and a badge number and calling back if it turns out to be legit:

"Phone call:
Ask for a call back number and employee badge number.
Contact the IRS to determine if the caller is an IRS employee
with a legitimate need to contact you.
If you determine the person calling you is an IRS
employee with a legitimate need to contact you, call them back."

What steps do you take if it isn't a legitimate IRS call?

I received the same call telling me I was due a refund of 2,100 dollars. They had my ss# and tld me that the tax error was made by myself in my filing of my taxes. Therefore, I needed to give them my checking account info so that they could collect the penalty fee of $98. Unless I made that paymet I was not eligable. I asked if I could have my tax filing service to handle this for me....the rep. Told me in a much quieter, disappointed voice that I could try that. I told him I would do that instead, and he ended the cll abruptly.

It is a scam:

They called me yesterday. I just checked the message today, and it was an automated message saying I'm owed $2,000 and to call them to verify the funds. I assumed it was a scam, because I know that my last tax return is being investigated by the IRS due to fraud - and they told me if there were any developments I would be mailed a letter by them, so why this call out of the blue? I googled the number to see if it would pop up with any IRS affiliation, and lo and behold the scam sites that came up smdh...I'm tempted to call them any way and tell them to take their fee out of the money they claim I'm getting back, they're the ones who have it right? Just to see what they say. There has to be a way to trace this number and business and report them to the FDC, BBB, FBI, CIA, and whoever else needs to be notified of this federal crime.

These people called me from this # I called back they answered the IRS sounded all official. They said I had a refund due to past mistakes of over $2,000 but I had to pay some for making the mistakes. They wanted me to buy a money pack for $179 dollars and call it into them. I figured it for a scam but theyhave my SS# and my banking info, I don't know how and I am scared!! I want these people in prison they also gave me a mailing address. Of course I can't get a human on the phone at the IRS or my bank!

A message was left on my home voicemail to call the IRS at this number.  When I called the number, it first says "hold while my call is being transferred to an officer", then it rings and another message says "we will transfer the call" and it keeps circling around.  Sounds like a scam to me.  I think the IRS would send you a letter in the mail about any personal matters.

The message said I was due an additional refund of $2,000+ and it could not be put into my account until I call and verify information.  They say they are from IRS; however, if I am due additional refund it will automatically be applied to what I owe them in arrears.  That was most definitely a red flag for me!!
