Just got a call along the lines described by others posting here. This is the IRS, tax fraud case against you, return call urgently or you face arrest and prosecution. This is a flagrantly illegal scam. An article in the local newspaper described it and warned recipients of these calls to not respond or provide any personal information. What I don't understand is why the IRS can't shut it down ASAP as misrepresentation of oneself as a federal agent is a felony crime.

This guy called from 202-506-9539 claiming to be an attorney and that the IRS would be filing suit against. I hung up. The IRS doesn't call, it sends letters. attorneys don't just call, they send letters. We have reported the matter to the police.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Received a pre-recorded call from this number - same as others - IRS is after me!!!  Sheriffs at my door! I owe money!!  I reported to national do-not-call registry, but decided to call these scum to see what they're after.  Got Mark Brown (strange name for someone with thick Indian accent?).  Played dumb, afraid, asked what I should do.  Got this whole speech of owing IRS and warrants for my arrests and they'll be at my door in 30 minutes to put me in hand-cuffs.  Tried to get what he was after - figured it was some money scam and even offered to pay, but he didn't take that bait..so I'm not sure what scam this is.  Listened long enough, told him I was call from police station and call was being recorded by detective who would be contacting DA.  Told him he better be looking for federal agents to show up at his door. He just laughed and hung up.  It was scary that he knew my name.  These people are evil,,,,but I am curious as to what they are after.

You should call your phone company asking for help.  They will block this number, so those scam agencies can not call you anymore

Prank Call
I just got a call from this number...I couldn't get the name quite right...but sounds like Heather Graham or Edmund Green or something like that.
The guys claims he is from IRS and gave me this phone number as the "offline xxx department".  It is hard to understand the complete message...too much static.  Funny it also said the same "legal allegation against you".
Few days, I got another scam call as if it was from my local county police and they said police will come and arrest me within 45 minutes.  Our county had a press release couple of weeks ago about this scam.

I just got the same call from the "IRS". The guy could barely speak English and when I asked a bunch of questions, he hung up.

It was pretty funny in that he really did not know much about the IRS all he could say was that he was in Washington, DC and that there is a tax lien.

Gave me a good chuckle.

We received a call from 202-506-9539.  I called back and someone with a VERY THICK Indian accent informed me there is a law suit against me and asked whether I have an attorney.  COMPLETE BS !!!   He then claimed the police would be arriving at my home within 45 minutes and would take me away in HAND CUFFS !!   This got too funny .... what a joke.    I asked him in a concerned voice, what I could do to fix this problem, and he said ... NOTHING.  I'll be going to jail.   I then hung up.  All I can say is this did provide for some afternoon amusement!!

I received a call this morning from this number and a recorded message came advising that  the call is from IRS and I have a tax fraud case against me and if I don't have an attorney they will represent me.
I called the number 202-506-9539 back and talked to a live person on this number. He told me that I have a fraud case filed in the us court and an arrest warrant obtained. He also asked if I have an attorney. When I told him if they have an arrest warrant already I would like to go to jail for sometime. He cursed me out and hung up the phone
