i received a call from Vanderbilt and Associates stating they are going to serve papers to go to court for an unpaid credit card balance/ He stated this account was opened in 2006 with Meridia Visa--I do not know who this is.. They called my direct line at work. How did they get this information and he could not send me any papers that I signed with Meridia/Visa credit....

I have had the EXACT same thing happen - call after call after call for a person who has the same first and last name but a different middle initial.  No matter what I tell them, they keep calling.  I've asked to be taken off the call list, and they promise they will and it does not good.  Ironically they called about and hour ago, promised not to bother us again, then called my cell phone 20 minutes later!  I am at my wits end how to get this to stop.

I got a phone call from a guy he told me i owed a debt from two years ago an overdrafted bank account which i recall going into the bank and paying cash...i was asked do i have any proof and of course its been two years and i have thrown the receipt away...i told him i was not going to pay something that i already paid unless he shows me the i officially owe that to the bank...he said he was sending the paperwork to proceed with the lawsuit and said good luck arguing in court...this is all over $157 and now he said he is trying to take me to court for $1500 and if they win they will garnish my wages..at first i was nice then i just got pissed...can they do that??? how is it that i was able to open up 3 bank accounts since 2010 if I had a debt with a bank????

I have been receiving harrasing  phone calls from this company for over a month.

Case # 3167445--(Calvin ?)---I AM NOT THIS PERSON, NOR DO I KNOW THIS PERSON.

As instructed, I hung up the call several times--but the calls kept coming.  I have since contacted them on 3 separate occasions to have my number removed.  Each person I spoke with promised the # would be removed. Guess what?  I'm still getting the calls.

This company should be sanctioned!!!!!!!!!

What they need to do is drop the recording that states it's about a "civil matter" and then have the balls to include they are nothing but a bottom feeding junk debt collector.  They've called my landlord twice now and he's fuming mad.  He's got no interest in my personal affairs and doesn't like getting these calls.  He has already complainted to the FTC for them calling after he requested they stop.  He fully understands the situation.  My neighbors practically worship the ground I walk on  and this whole idea of trying to embarrass someone by calling friends is pathetic.  They will never get a dime out of me and in the process I'll have so many complaints filed with the Florida and California AG they will be switching to another name real fast.  I believe this scuzzy collection agency is at the bottom of the pit of all of them.  I think it's the last pit stop for junk debt and they have nothing to lose by breaking all the laws they do.  What moron threatens you over a debt when the debt is over the SOL?  What are they going to do waist time filing knowing they won't win?  Never serve you so they get a default judgement still knowing the second you do find out about the default judgement you will be getting a lawyer and have it vacated and then turn around and sue them for tens of thousands of dollars for violating so many laws it could choke a horse?  These collectors are little by little being held accountable.  California Senate passed bill SB 890 protecting the consumer from unscrupulous C.A.  The bill fully protects the consumer when a CA goes overboard to decieve.  It won't be much longer and the days will be gone with pieces of sh.t like Vanderbilt will be shut down.  It's time to also create a new law that holds the calling "agent" responsible immediately for their comments.  The law needs to require all collection agents to be certified within their state and must produce their number to the person on the other line they are speaking with.  This immediately holds the caller responsible for their comments.  If you have complaints you can referrence the collectors certified number so they can't hide behind a fictitious name.  If they give you a bogus number then the collections right to collect on the alleged debt is removed.  The days of hiding behind a phone and playing school yard bully for minimum wage are coming to an end.

they called my house, left message stating regarding a pending civil matter- also called 2 family members.  these people should all be required to leave detailed info on what creditor they are calling about so you can check to see if it is one you are aware of to be ready with info to call them back.

This company called my neighbor and left them a message for me to call them about a civil matter.  Not only did they call my neighbor, they called two of my sisters and my 78 yo mother.  All over a small debt (less than $100 dollars) that was settled well over 10 years ago.

I called the BBB on them.

This has got to be illegal recevied a call from vanderbilt and associates , they were looking for my friend, but for some reason they called my mom, eldery grandmother, and sick uncle which left him very upset. I've read somewhere, where they have a private investigator to dig, and thats what they do because the people they called dont even know my friend.  Some one from vanderbilt called and did not indentify herself caller id says, gaby to make it look like they are calling you from cellphone, and then they harrass family and friends and leave them messages. This is not legal filed a complaint.

All you have to do is call the number they left and tell them you are not that person and they won't call you it's not a scam either yeah sometimes mistakes are made but if you call them and tell them the truth (even if they are a***oles be adult about it) and the calls will STOP it's not about harassment it's about communication try it and if it doesn't work what's the worst that could happen you hang up?and if it's you and it's bad enough they will take it too they next legal level

Received calls from 888-342-0623.  They left a message saying to call Vanderbilt and Associates regarding Brian Hanz and gave me his case number.  They said the call was urgent.  I did not call them back, since I am NOT Brian Hanz.  How on earth did they get my number?!

I was telephoned three times this week by these people. They said that they were going to serve me papers and that I needed to phone immediately. Upon doing so, I was told that they were collecting on a debt from 2006. I played along and offered to settle for half which would have been about 1600. They wanted my credit card or checking information, etc. I told them I would need to do more research and hung up!! Scam, scam, scam. I pulled my credit report and I paid this account off back in 2008!! I told them that I never received any mail from them and they said that they sent letters over a month ago....Be careful...I haven't heard from them again and that was over one week ago...

Report them now.

Report any problems you have with a debt collector to your state Attorney General?s office (www.naag.org) and the Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov). Many states have their own debt collection laws that are different from the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Your Attorney General?s office can help you determine your rights under your state?s law.

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre18.shtm

Can a debt collector contact anyone else about my debt?
If an attorney is representing you about the debt, the debt collector must contact the attorney, rather than you. If you don?t have an attorney, a collector may contact other people ? but only to find out your address, your home phone number, and where you work. Collectors usually are prohibited from contacting third parties more than once. Other than to obtain this location information about you, a debt collector generally is not permitted to discuss your debt with anyone other than you, your spouse, or your attorney.

If all else fails, make them prove they owe the debt by debt validation.

yes, they have autobot that calls every Larry Johnson in the hopes of getting the right one.  By telling them to stop calling you and citing the Fair Credit Reporting Act should stop the calls.  If a relative tells them there is no one there with that name they are supposed to take the number off their calling list.
By all means do not talk to them as this will start the clock ticking again, if it is your debt.
I got one today on my cell phone and it's not mine.  They used 215-268-3772 and told me to call 888-342-6023 and as for Rick Baxter.

I got a call from a Vanderbilt & Associates from 1-888-342-0623. After reading this and seeing it is a possible scam. I  am not going to call them back. Then my neighbor comes over with a message telling me they called her and for me to call them. She thought it was very weird. I am reporting to BBB and anyone else that will listen.
