Got a voicemail from 202-470-5474 with a call back number of 877-334-4956 - very heavy accent saying his name was David Miller from the Federal Consumer Protection Agency in Washington.  Pleasant, no threats. No other details but a request to call back at their toll free number.  I called the 202 number and it eventually went to voicemail with no identifying message: "you've reached so and so of such and such"  etc, just a recorded female voice saying leave a message at the tone.  I did not leave a message. I did not call the toll free number.

Apparently through one vendor or another, my information was sold and now I get calls every 6-8 months from a group that uses that information through different tactics to get me to pay them money.  They have a lot of my personal information which is scary!!  The names, the accent, etc. are all too familiar - David Brown, David Miller, Brian Miller etc.

In some cases I've been told that they are collecting on a bad debt and they wish me luck when the sheriff comes to arrest me at my place of employment, they'll see me in court, blah blah blah.  These calls used to terrify me but I never gave in and gave any additional information.

It seems that as soon as the complaints start racking up on these types of call identifier websites, they change their numbers and their MO.

I wonder if it is a crime to identify yourself as a representative of a Federal agency?

P.S.  I failed to mention that while the regular phone number is 202-580-8169, they claim their toll-free number is 877-334-4956.

The caller's name was George, claiming to work for Publisher's Clearing House, but the Caller I.D. stated it was a Washington D.C. number.  The caller sounded professional and didn't hang up on me; but I still have my doubts about the authenticity of this agency due to what I have read prior to this message that I am contributing.

when I answered, they said it was a special agent from the federal department of sweepstakes something. He told me he was assigned my case due to a fraudulent sweepstakes I entered about 3 months ago. When I stated laughing at him and asked how Ed Mcmahon was doing he swore and hung up on me.

The guy says his name is Robert White, & wants you to wire $5000 to a Costa Rica Account in order to get your winnings. If you fall for this, you STUPID. His explaination to wiring money to Costa Rica instead of the US, is that his trying to save you money in taxes. What a joke. He says he's from the Federal Trade Commission, that works weekends.
