I had a phone call today and it was a man with an Indian accent and he told me the same thing. that i was one of the winner to win a free government grant for 7800 and that out of so many people i was selected because i had no criminal background and had no bad credit and paid bills on time. it was an unknow caller and he gave me a number to call 202-697-9989 with a confirmation number of sm157 i called and she said i needed to go to western union star and deposit 225.00 to receive my grant in my bank account she also had a Indian accent and i asked why do i have to do that? she said in order to receive payment and i asked is there a way i can receive a government letter stating that so i have proof this isn't a scam and my phone call was disconnected. i think this is a scam doesn't make sense and they will not provide u with any letter they want your bank account info and routing number before they give u the number so be very care full i gave a false one.

Yes...I got a call from 5 thats it.. from a woman with a strong Indian accent as well. My number was selected due to the fact I had good credit, no bankruptcy and paying my bills on time..  However I was not asked to pay a thing. She asked what I would spend the money for. It was 8000.00. I said travel. Asked how long I have lived in the area. Then wanted my CC number or my Bank info.. I said if this is legitimate mail me a check. She said it was electronic transfrer only. I could give an account with a zero balance and I would have $8000,00 in the account within 45 min. My reply was " I am not giving you my bank information" I got tired of arguing with her and hung up. An hour or so later I got another call from "5" and i ignored it. I will duscuss this with my son who is a sergeant with the County Sheriff Dept.

Well I made the mistake and sent the $225.00 to them. They came back and said that an additional $786.00 would be required in order to pay off the taxes on this allaged grant money. I called them back and acted like the money had been sent. They came back and said that an additional $1100.00 would need to be sent in order to activate the grant money. I told them to go shove themselves. I came home and contacted the BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU, they are looking into it.

If anyone receives a call from this number, do not answer.this call.It is a company that claims to give you an x amount of Free Grant money, if you send them an x amount of money to initiate the skam, and if you play along, you will loose a lot of money.

Though the message and information sounds legitimate, there are too many RED FLAGS alluding to a scam.  The telephone number is from Washington D.C. and the address is verifiable.  However, government websites are .gov's not .com, .org, .net, or any other tag.  The government would never ask you to pay a processing fee or a refundable security deposit in which to collect funds you have been awarded.  The government would not send money via Western Union; one does not receive tax refunds, Social Security, or educational grants in this manner.  Most monetary instruments presented are void within a certain amount of time; lengthy, such as 30, 60, or 90 days.
The call I received was to inform me that I was to receive the grant based on the fact that I had not filed bankruptcy, had a criminal record, and was not in a delinquent status with any creditor over the past six months.
The call came from "The Grant Approval Department" for the amount of $7800, to be used for home repairs, pay off existing debts, or for educational purposes.  It was not to be used for illegal or gambling purposes.  The female that contacted me was, "Amy Taylor, Employee ID #AY8007C."  I was instructed to take the File Approval Code, a five digit number, to the local Western Union and pay a small refundable security fee of $225 within two days.  I would then receive a money control number in which to collect the $8025.  I was given the telephone number, 202-580-8384, and an address, 200 Independence Avenue HHH Bldg. Southwest, Washington D.C. 20201, and a web address, www.governmentgrants.org.  She slipped up at first by saying, ".com."  Upon terminating the call I returned the call to inquire as to why the government would be sending money through Western Union and why they would require a refundable deposit.  I was told money could be transferred more quickly and the deposit was for security reasons, mainly to prove it was me making the transaction and not to worry, it would be refunded.  I agree, there are too many inconsistencies to believe this to be legitimate.  I contacted the District Attorney's Office and filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.  I surely hope other citizens do the same and not fall victim to this type of scam.

Government Grant Scams
Although government grant scams have been around almost as long as the government itself, the majority of the sites being advertised today didn't exist before the November 2008 election.

FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION WEBSITE
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt134.shtm

?Free Government Grants?: Don?t Take Them For Grant-ed
?Because you pay your income taxes on time, you have been awarded a free $12,500 government grant! To get your grant, simply give us your checking account information, and we will direct-deposit the grant into your bank account!?
Sometimes, it?s an ad that claims you will qualify to receive a ?free grant? to pay for education costs, home repairs, home business expenses, or unpaid bills. Other times, it?s a phone call supposedly from a ?government? agency or some other organization with an official sounding name. In either case, the claim is the same: your application for a grant is guaranteed to be accepted, and you?ll never have to pay the money back.

Don?t give out your bank account information to anyone you don?t know. Scammers pressure people to divulge their bank account information so that they can steal the money in the account. Always keep your bank account information confidential. Don?t share it unless you are familiar with the company and know why the information is necessary.

Don?t pay any money for a ?free? government grant. If you have to pay money to claim a ?free? government grant, it isn?t really free. A real government agency won?t ask you to pay a processing fee for a grant that you have already been awarded ? or to pay for a list of grant-making institutions. The names of agencies and foundations that award grants are available for free at any public library or on the Internet. The only official access point for all federal grant-making agencies is www.grants.gov.

Look-alikes aren?t the real thing. Just because the caller says he?s from the ?Federal Grants Administration? doesn?t mean that he is. There is no such government agency. Take a moment to check the blue pages in your telephone directory to bear out your hunch ? or not.

Phone numbers can deceive. Some con artists use Internet technology to disguise their area code in caller ID systems. Although it may look like they?re calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.

I received a phone from:    Cheryl Morgan, CM256 about a Grant, that I had a 3279 number to pick up the money in cash but I needed $ 250 in cash and that would be returned with the $7800 from the government.  The girl spoke in a broken accent and as the department that was sending the money was the Federal Government.

Today i received a call from 202-580-8383. A lady with a heavy accent said I had received a Federal grant of $7.800 and needed to go to a Western Union office right away and collect it and pay $225. then i would get the $225 refunded.  I don.t know how they got my cell phone number.  I wasn't supposed to tell anyone about it. Her name was Sara Jones, an English welsh name. Will someone please report this to the proper authority as I don't know who to call.  It should be reported as soon as possible before anyone gets ripped off.  Does anyone know whom to contact?

I just got the same phone call but they tried to charge me $ 225 for the same 8,000 dollars. They said it would be refunded to me in 2 to 3 minits.
She could barley speak English , and said her name was Nancy Williams.
I called my local F. B. I. Office, ( philliadelphia PA. ). They said that it was most defiantly a scam, and there is nothing that they were willing to do about it, GOOD BUY !

I just received a call from from an unknown caller...pretty much the same as what you guys have said...deposit $225 and receive within minutes $8,225...I sure could use this money...gave me the excuse that because I have no criminal record nor have filed bankruptcy I qualified for this free grant from the government. With the way things are going the government don't have the money to give or I would figure it would have to go through the IRS some how...sure wish it was real...but as broke as I am I can't afford to test it out to see if it is real...LOL

The same thing has been happening to me. I get either indian woman or man. Amounts change someitmes but always the western union 200.00. They hang up as soon as you tell them they are a hoax. I have also told them shame on them for trying to cheat elderly people out of hard earned money and  that the government wouldnt make calls like that. As the first call I got they wanted my checking account# but now have changed to western union. Can't get them to quit calling. It comes up unavailable but so does some places of employments I have applied at.
